We stumbled across this place as we were driving towards Portland and I must it was an interesting find. This is not the new berry volcano, the volcano itself is around 30 miles from this place. This is a cinder cone, think of it as one to many mini volcanos that blew up due to the lava pressure around the new berry volcano and created a butte on top. Now there are 3 things 2 can do here: 1- The most interesting is I guess the lava tunnels, under the mountain ranges long tunnels were formed by flowing lava. Lava tunnels are not exactly in this spot. They are across the highway on the other side and need advance reservation as they get filled pretty quickly. Look for lava tunnels on google in the area and you can get to the website and reserve. We could not as we just decided to cover this attraction on our way to our destination. 2- The easy hike around the cinder cone with lava rocks all around. This was super cool for me as I had not seen anything like that. You can also see the Cascade mountain range from here on a clear day, broken mountain, twin sisters, etc.. 3- A bus ride, hike or a bike ride to the top of the cinder cone or lava butte. It’s a $3 bus round trip per person and has to be paid in cash, don’t ask me why. 5 minute ride to top, you can see views from the top and talk to the ranger. The guy we spoke with was awesome and gave us a lowdown on the area which was pretty cool. The gift shop was good. Overall a good place to spend a couple of hours.

Beautiful scenery and well kept road to the top. However, carefully search their site for what's open for the time of year you go. We were there early November. The park is open for walking/biking the trails and the road to the caldera. However the information building is closed and the road to the top is closed to cars for the season. The 3.8 mile walk on 8% grade (each way) was a bit much for us (grandparents and 7yr old) so we only walked part way.

this has been my favorite stop so far while in the Bend area. It's almost like stepping back in time but with paved / well maintained trails. The Nature Center has a fun and informative museum and there is also a gift shop. The Rangers are amazing and took time just for us to let us know about the park and help my son with an activity to earn a badge in the Junior Ranger Program. The Coup de Grace however is shuttle access to the top of Lava Butte. Breathing views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and the 3 Sisters await as well as a full spectrum view of the lava flow and a look into the now dormant caldera.. Such a great experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in the volcanic geology of the region.

Visit the Lava Lands Visitor Center first to gather information and a free map of the parks. We went to Big Obsidian Flow - spectacular view from to top. The vista from Lava Butte Rim Trail is phenomenal too.

Great area for hiking, camping and exploring volcanic stuff. The park has two main areas within its bone-shaped boundaries - the main visitor center / cinder cone at the north end just off the main road, and the supervolcano caldera at the southern end with most recreational opportunities.

Wonderful interpretation center and lovely gift shop to be able to support the work they do. The first part of the walk on the trail to see the Lava fields is a very easy walk and ADA accessible. Most definitely worth the stop. Very nice forested area in the shade with picnic tables for a nice lunch stop. We visited in mid July and it was 94 degrees if temperature is an issue for you.

100% recommend. We spent two hours here hiking the Trail of Molten Land. The trail is entirely asphalt paved and has nice markings to indicate the trail features. Though few sections are a bit steep, it's a good trail for kids too. We also drove up to the top and walked around the rim of the Lava Butte. This trail is not paved but very easy to walk, the views all around are incredible. There is plenty of parking near the visitor center, $5 fee per vehicle if you don't have a National pass.

We only had time to visit the Lava Butte Area and the 1 mile Trail of Molten Land. The park is beautiful, made to preserve the caldera and volcanic remnants of the Newberry Volcano. A forest service ranger did a great talk about the geology of the volcanoes of the Cascade Range. The Trail of Molten Lava leads visitors through a lava field from the eruption of lava field. This park is at least worth a quick stop, we will be back to visit the caldera and lava tubes another time.

This place is incredible. We arrived just in time for the 11:00AM educational program led by Park Ranger, Bob. Bob was so engaging and we learned so much about the volcanic activity, forest, and landscape of this National Monument. A beautiful place to visit and learn. Perfect for earth science enthusiasts! We went during a week day and it wasn’t crowded at all plenty of parking and we were able to go to Lava Butte! In addition, you get amazing views of the cascades. Definitely don’t miss out on this beautiful place.

Fantastic national monument, both the lava lands side and the caldera were great. Paulina lake and peak were beautiful. The great Obsidian flow was one of a kind, just amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and wind definitely return.

Interesting historic monument with lots of history. Large interpretive center and gift shop with hiking trails throughout the lava beds and a shuttle that will take you to the top of the lava butte. Wonderful view of the surrounding mountains!

Great place to visit if in the area. Very cool lava rock formations, reminded a little of Hawaii. Multiple short, paved trails to walk on, great for about 1-2 hours. Beautiful views of the already snowy Mt. Bachelor and surrounding landscape.

Very cool area, $3 shuttle round trip to get to top and back down. Nice loop to hike and see the whole panoramic landscape.

After visiting Craters of the Moon, this volcano site was nothing spectacular. There were three staff in the visitors' information and when we entered not one of them greeted our party. The only thing I found spectacular was the road on the side of the hill (not sure if this was part of the volcano or separate from it)

It is winter closed, but if you want to walk up along the volcano then just walk along the obsidian connecting to the fence. Such an awesome walk and a jaw dropping experience of natures forces. The obsidian trail was a nice experience as well.

Recommend visiting this national monument if you're in the Bend area! Very cool area to explore. I recommend driving up to the Lava Butte and walking around the Obsidian Flow. I also recommend having the National Park Annual pass - it covers this place as well.

Awesome experience walking up and around the rim on cinders and seeing the black lava fields below!

This is a well structured park, with great views showcasing the transformative power of the volcano. The trails are mostly paved, so I imagine this would be a great place to bring your bikes. If you plan on visiting the summit, it's worth noting you only get a 30 minute window to drive up. If you want to take more time it might be worth hiking up, but there is no water at the top so come prepared.

We visited right when it opened on a Sunday and there wasn’t very many people. We biked up to the top of Lava Butte but you can take a shuttle that runs throughout the day. There are also several walking and biking paths, you can even take the paths down to Sun River from here.
