Prairie Creek Redwoods is host to miles and miles of amazing trails through groves of giants, pristine beaches, prairies full of elk, and unique sites like Fern Canyon. Some areas are reservation only, such as the Tall Trees Grove, and Fern Canyon Parking (This can be accessed on foot from the visitor center via a 5 mile trail). Elk are around the visitor center and prairie area. The twelve mile James Irvine Loop is a great way to experience all the majesty of the park. Parking is limited.

First, itโ€™s free! Did I mention that itโ€™s free to go! Anyways moving on! We weathered out two days in Crescent city so we could finally visit the redwoods. It was Coltraneโ€˜s first time seeing this type of forest and as always I was completely unprepared for this stunning beauty and he loved it! Definitely make a stop and see the โ€œbig tree!โ€

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in California is a majestic sanctuary that embraces visitors in the awe-inspiring embrace of ancient redwood forests. This enchanting park is a treasure trove of natural wonders, where towering trees soar towards the heavens and sunlight filters through the dense canopy, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadows. As you venture deeper into the park, you'll discover a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife, from elusive deer to vibrant birds. The air is infused with the earthy scent of moss and damp earth, and the sounds of babbling creeks and rustling leaves provide a soothing backdrop to your exploration. The surrounding area exudes a sense of tranquility and harmony, inviting visitors to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is a sanctuary of beauty and serenity, a place where you can immerse yourself in the grandeur of the redwoods and find solace in the embrace of the natural world.

American Arbor Day With a little love and support, this little sprout at Prairie Creek Redwood State Park in California has a big future ahead of it. It has the potential to one day be the tallest tree on the planet, or at least close to it. Its โ€˜big brother,โ€™ Hyperion, currently holds the record at 380 feet. Theyโ€™re giant sequoias, aka giant redwood trees. They often grow upwards of 300 feet tall and can live for thousands of years. Theyโ€™re heroes of nature, affecting the weather and climate, while housing and protecting other plants and animals. But all of this little sproutโ€™s potential is at risk because the giant sequoia is an endangered species. Fewer than 80,000 of them remain. Thatโ€™s why today is an important day for it and all trees. Thatโ€™s right, today is Arbor Day, the day where we stop a moment to think about the trees (and hopefully even plant a few). The first American Arbor Day occurred 150 years ago, when an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska in 1872. This year, Americaโ€™s Arbor Day Foundation is celebrating its 50th year of dedication to tree planting. Theyโ€™ve planted over 350 million of them over the years, but the mission never ends. Trees are vital to the health of our planet, which means they're important for our own health as well. Why not do a little to make the future a better place and take a moment to nurture or plant a new tree today?

There are so many spots to see Redwoods that it can be a bit confusing. This one state park, however, has as good variety of EVERYTHING to satisfy your Redwoods curiosities. From Big Tree to boardwalks to smaller quaint trails. Plenty to see and explore for days!

This is probably our favorite park in the Redwoods Park system. Start with Big Bree, walk cathedral trail, then, if you're up for a longer walk, so Rhododendron Trail with the cutoff at South Fork, which gives you a moderately strenuous 7 mile hike. Also fantastic are the amazing trails out of Fern Canyon like Friendship Ridge or Davison Canyon trails.

Just so beautiful. Well maintained trails, knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful rangers. Prarie Creek is part of Redwoods state and National Parks and in my opinion has some of the best trails because you have access to beach and woods. In all honesty, whichever parks you visit will take your breath away.

I really wanted to see Fern Canyon but was unable to get a Permit, so I did the James Irvine trail. It's 4.5 miles to get to fern canyon and then 4.5 miles back, total of 9-10 miles depending on how far you go on the Fern Canyon trail. It was sooooo worth it. What an amazing alternative hike to get to Fern Canyon! Instead of buying a permit, earn your way there!

Gorgeous park and well worth the drive. My wife stopped in here to walk the James Irvine Trail. We were pressed for time so we parked in the official park area (cost $8 and we'll worth having a safe place to leave the Van) and walked the Cathedral Trail. This trail was the coolest of all aces I've seen in the Redwoods. The map states the trail is only .42 miles long, but I'm not sure where they came up with that. It took as hour to take the trail and make it to Big Tree and back to our Van. Anyways, awesome little journey and a must see. Even saw tons of elk.

Remarkable ancient redwood forest. Visitor Center with great maps of roads leading to different trail head access. Well maintained paths to hike through. Enjoyed resting and Forest bathing on a bench placed by the Rotary Club in 1952.

Prairie Creek is absolutely magical!!! It is so green and lush. And the trail we took leading to the Fern Trail was not difficult. I heard that the Fern Trail requires walking in water a little higher than ankle deep. So bring waterproof boots or sandals and an extra pair of socks. So excited to do that trail the next time!! Have fun and enjoy the quiet, colorful beauty of nature!!! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฒ

Great trip through an ancient forest of beautiful Redwoods. Stopped at Big Tree to take a look and short hike with my dog. The size and age of the trees is astonishing. I felt humbled. Highly recommended.

The Visitors Center is the entry point to at least ten beautiful trails. Some very short, some longer and challenging both in the climb as well as narrow, less-traveled trails. The recent storms had several trails partially blocked to fully blocked due to fallen branches or full trees. No matter, I highly recommend the park!

Very beautiful scenery. Must wear good hiking shoes and you should always walk with a partner. Lots of trails are available from a 0.6mile hike to a 3.6m trek to the beach.

Astoundingly beautiful. You could spend a lifetime exploring this park and still miss an unspeakable amount of treasures.

This is a must see while traveling through the Redwoods. Don't miss the opportunity to pull over and walk one of the trails. You don't have to walk 10 miles, even just walk 200 yards into the forest, breathe deeply, look up a lot and appreciate the magnitude of the "giants". Look down on "carpeted" forest floor and notice the boughs, the colors and maybe even a salamander!

A must visit. There is nothing better than these redwoods wherever you're headed, stop and take half an hour to exist in the world. Cal Barrel road is dog friendly, free, and an easy 3 mile hike

Stayed in the hiker/biker site and was pleased to have grass to sleep on. The showers were great and the restrooms were heated. Quite a treat!

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ I am a local flying dress photographer for "Diamond Memories" in Eureka and I absolutely love shooting and spending time at Moonstone Beach. It is gorgeous and is often full of families and dogs. Lots of rocks to play on and caves to explore. You often see people repelling or surfing as well!
