A Train Enthusiast's Delight: Exploring the National Railway Museum in Entroncamento I recently had the pleasure of visiting the National Railway Museum in Entroncamento, and it was an absolute treat for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. If you have a passion for trains and are eager to delve into the rich history of Portuguese railways, this museum is an absolute must visit. One of the highlights of the museum is the opportunity to step inside old carriages and gain a fascinating insight into how trains appeared in the past. The museum is thoughtfully organized, providing a comprehensive narrative of Portugal's railway heritage. During my visit, I had the pleasure of bringing along my 7-year-old nephew, and he had an absolute blast. The museum offers an engaging experience for young visitors as well. My nephew was thrilled to explore the various exhibits, interact with the displays, and get a sense of what it was like to be aboard these historic trains. However, the highlight for him was undoubtedly the train ride at the end of our visit. It was a delightful way to conclude the museum experience and left a lasting impression on both of us. The National Railway Museum in Entroncamento offers a well-rounded and captivating journey into the world of Portuguese trains. The exhibits are carefully curated, providing a wealth of information and an authentic glimpse into the country's railway history. Whether you're a seasoned train enthusiast or simply curious about the topic, this museum offers something for everyone.

We found this museum by chance when we were waiting for our train to Tomar. The Electric Central is a beautiful historical building, visible from the train station. Beautiful.

Large walkable museum that allows you to go from one building to another. Dozens of large locomotives, engines, and cabins to explore. Detailed multimedia and signage in English, Portuguese and other languages. This museum tells a beautiful story about the history of trains in Portugal. I was very impressed by the size and high quality of the displays. Caution: be very careful crossing the railroad tracks as it's a live track. Real trains run through the middle of the museum. Hold your kids close and don't let them wander by themselves!

Fantastic and comprehensive museum, even interesting for non-train-lovers (or the spouses of train-lovers). A great location next to the busy train station. Nicely laid out museum where you can spend the whole day exploring. Would also be great for kids. Some really impressive trains on display. As a note, easy to follow as a non-Portuguese speaker.

Beautiful engines in the Rotunda. Many reasons for a long visit for the train aficionado. Lots of info on the history on the rail in Portugal and on the main historical operator.

Been there with our two children, 4 and 6 years. All of us liked the museum. Museum is very interesting, from small things to lokomotives, president train and royal train. Having a ride on kid train was a lot of fun. All the staff very friendly, involved and already ready to tell something interesting. Definitely worth dropping in for 1-2 hours.

Nice to see old trains and some history regarding the railway system of Portugal, but nothing really giving a WOW factor unless you are really passionate about old (and often rusty) trains

Fantastic collection of old locomotives, wagons and railway memorabilia. Not at all crowded. Helpful staff. Would have been a 5 star rating if they could find a way to allow the public to enter at least a few of the railwaycars.

As always a wonderful place to visit, male or female, young or old. A huge selection of all things railway related and some fantastic trains and tolling stock. Entry is very reasonable and the museum is easily accessible from the main station via a footbridge.

Great place to see train's history of Portugal. We can't enter in the trains but in some cases we can see from outside. The children (and adults also) can ride a small train. 🚂

What an amazing place to visit. The staff are awesome and so willing to help. When we arrived, they asked us if we traveled there by train and we showed them our train tickets. So we got a 50% discount on the entry fee. The displays are fantastic and the history so well presented. So many locomotives and coaches to see as well as other items of interest. Visit this museum, you won't be sorry.

Unfortunately we only had an hour, but we still got an overwhelming impression of the old railways. Detailed restoration of a presidential train can be seen. The location in Entroncamento is also absolutely suitable.

  • 4/5 Florian S. 7 years ago on Google
Railway museum with a very decent collection, located right next to the train station(you have to cross the second, more distant bridge all the way to the left). Unfortunately the more general text boards in the permanent collection are without English translations (the explanations of the specific items are translated, though). Some additional viewing stands would be nice as well in order to look into more waggons and the locomotives...

Had a lovely time because I’m a train freak, reckon not the most exciting visit for those who don’t care that much. I particularly wanted to see the German trains PORTUGAL received as compensation for WWI, they were there but the personnel working there wasn’t able to inform me correctly.

(Translated by Google) This National Railway Museum deserves the title of world heritage. There is the history of the Portuguese railways, something that other countries should do, as the train was present all over the world before cars and buses as we know them. Portugal managed to gather literary, photographic and machinery from north to south in one place, with all the technology available to visitors to "travel" in time. In countries like Brazil, where I live, there is a huge amount of railway material degrading in abandoned stations and by railways, from locomotives to cabins and stations, all due to public agencies. The National Railway Museum of Portugal in the city of Entroncamento is an example to be followed.
