Going to Ravenna and not seeing it is the same as going to the Vatican and not seeing the Sistine chapel.  Small but very beautiful building built in 1780 on the site of an earlier 15th century building, which replaced the original chapel built after Dante's death in 1321. It houses the sarcophagus containing Dante's bones. It is free of charge therefore crowded. So you need to wait some time to have a look and take pictures. Dante's museum is right beside it and there is also a gift shop located in front. Next to the tomb behind a 1921  iron fence there is an ancient oratory  once linked to the church of San Francesco.  In the nearby garden an ivy covered mount marks the place where the poet's bones were kept safe during the Second World War. You can learn more about the poet's by scanning the QR codes that you will find spread around the place.

Dante’s tomb locates near to several chapels. It’s easy to reach. An open air. No ticket required. It’s well preserved, clean, and in the right atmosphere. Visitors are well behaved. Thanks to the city Ravenna, for hosting the greatest exile. During his life and after that. I wish Dante happy there and Firenze never take it back.

I loved visiting Ravenna and see Dante's tomb. It's beautiful and well maintained like the major part of the city.

An Italian neoclassical national monument built over the tomb of the poet Dante Alighieri. It is sited next to the Basilica of San Francesco in central Ravenna. A quiet place where you want to find more about the poet and to be more closer to God. The feeling is good.

Loreena McKennitt Lyrics "Dante's Prayer" When the dark wood fell before me And all the paths were overgrown When the priests of pride say there is no other way I tilled the sorrows of stone I did not believe because I could not see Though you came to me in the night When the dawn seemed forever lost You showed me your love in the light of the stars Cast your eyes on the ocean Cast your soul to the sea When the dark night seems endless Please remember me Then the mountain rose before me By the deep well of desire From the fountain of forgiveness Beyond the ice and the fire Cast your eyes on the ocean Cast your soul to the sea When the dark night seems endless Please remember me Though we share this humble path, alone How fragile is the heart Oh give these clay feet wings to fly To touch the face of the stars Breathe life into this feeble heart Lift this mortal veil of fear Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears We'll rise above these earthly cares Cast your eyes on the ocean Cast your soul to the sea When the dark night seems endless Please remember me Please remember me

Dante's tomb is a must see in Ravenna. Well, I was born and raised here, so my view might be biased, but the history relevance behind it and the significance of the place itself are huge. The nice surprise in 2021 is also the nice art gallery just around the corner. It's really awesome with modern artworks and really cool augmented reality too :)

Dante Alighieri's tomb...u need to show respect to this artist whose work was still in the middle ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of Dante Alighieri on western literature. By writing in the Italian vernacular rather than in Latin Dante influenced the course of literary development in Europe for several centuries. Dante's family was loyal to the Guelphs, a political alliance that was in a complex opposition to the Ghibellines. His Tomb and adjoining museum is a must see for anyone from the Royal city visiting Italy.

Easily accessible Dante Alighieri's Tomb, located in Ravenna, Italy, is a stunning piece of art and history. The tomb, designed by Tuscan sculptor and architect Bernardo Rossellino, features a white marble figure of Dante standing atop a black stone pedestal, surrounded by intricate reliefs depicting scenes from the Divine Comedy. The tomb is a must-see for anyone interested in Italian literature and culture.

It's a cool bit of history if you love literature but also the story of his bones and the Florentine's attempt to take them back is amusing. Watch for nightly readings of one canto from The Divine Comedy.

The tomb is interesting, yet in terms of historical accuracy it is a bit doubtful if this is actually Dante 's tomb. His body was moved so many times that the current edifice should be regarded as more or less symbolic.

A really neat spot to see, as tombs go. It is right out in the street and very public. Some neat stories surround this, and the tomb itself is very cool. Not enough to visit just by itself, but group it with other things in the srea and make half a day of it.

Sounds silly to say this, but I just love how no-nonsense this tomb was as a tourist attraction. Some famous dead-people-tombs around the world are annoying to even approach. But this was just part of a normal city center walk. I'd even pass it often going to-and-from places. That's the magic of Ravenna, though!

It’s a nice landmark and has a special meaning, even more if you appreciate dantes work. It has a little park and a interesting story between and ongoing fight with florence over the right to dantes tomb.

If you're visiting the Ravenna mosaics, Dante's Tomb will be en route between museums for you! There's no entrance fee, and it's a beautiful place to sit for a minute or two. Wasn't crowded at all when we visited.

The monument is newly created (around 100 years old) but very nice place and located next to a nice church to visit

Beautiful place. There is a description beside the tomb in Italian and English. We went here in the late afternoon and upon asking a friendly Carabinieri who was stationed nearby for directions to another site he told us to stay because at 6pm every day they do a reading from The Divine Comedy (in Italian) and ring a bell 13 times to salute the date of the night Dante died. It was very poignant. I highly recommend being there at 6pm.

Beautiful mausoleum for the poet Dante. You can't go in but it's worth a peak as it's do close to the tourist office, to see where the remains of the "Father of the Italian language” is laid to rest. Interesting to see where his remains were hidden during WW2 as well.

Didn't manage to get in, as the queues were long and the heat blistering 😰. Others I spoke with that did visit were pleased they did.
