Just want to provide a historical reality check for those who continue to give this place four- and five-star reviews. Since the place was bought by an outside investor, the place has fallen off a cliff in every sense. The monks and nuns are no longer the ones who serve you; prices have increased by 80% (yes literally $7.50 to $13.50); the portions are smaller; the spicy soup isn't spicy; the interior no longer has the quaint cozy living room vibe but is now every-other-vegan-restaurant green. Don't get me wrong, some of the changes were necessary, like a simplified menu and some remodeling to bring up the sanitation standards, but the investor has completely taken over the business and is very much running it to line his pocketbook. This place is no longer authentic Vietnamese food but the watered-down version for white Portlanders. But hey, if they keep spending their money, why not? My wife and I moved back from Taiwan in 2016 and the first restaurant we visited was this one. We are both vegetarian and she is a non-practicing Buddhist. There is a large Vietnamese expat community in Taiwan and we loved eating at the local shops, so we know authentic Vietnamese food. We fell in love with this place immediately and visited nearly every week for three years. We ordered the same thing nearly every time - pho and buddha bowl - and paid $19 with huge tip. The buddha bowl often required us to box some because it was so much food. Our most recent visit we paid $25 for takeout without a tip... exact same order, less food, and they replaced egg rolls (now separate dish for $5.50) in buddha bowl for textured tofu. The nuns now only work in the kitchen, so we didn't even get to see their friendly familiar faces. We understand these are tough times to be in the restaurant business but our meals, which were still good but nothing special, left an aftertaste of disappointment. We have debated whether or not we should continue to support this restaurant because of our appreciation for the ladies who used to run it. We decided that $13.50 for a lesser bowl of pho is just an insult to our memory of the place and won't be driving up from Milwaukie anymore. I really hope the business owner lets the generosity and genuineness of the nuns reinvigorate his business model.

Fully plant-based with gluten free items clearly delineated. Friendly and helpful staff. Overall, very fun vibe which is family-friendly (from noise level to decor to menu items). The selection is not ideal for those wanting a wide breadth of healthier options to choose from (minus salads). The gluten free chocolate chip cookie is delicious. Very sweet but delicious. Prices are very reasonable. Would have been better had the establishment not been ripped away from Chloe by ESquared.

I frequent this place a lot. The food is very good. So far I have tried most of the menu. I like that they don't overuse oil, especially that there are air fried fries. I like the salads the most, though the fish and chips is good too. The pasta options are tasty as well. Overall, everything is good. But it's more of a fast food style of restaurant. Still, pretty decent.

Vegan restaurant which offers takeout and dine in, we were served by a friendly manager Matteo who provided a service to remember, personable and friendly with a warm touch. We ordered the Guac burger with fries, Fish and Chips, Macaroni and Cheese as well as a red velvet cupcake and chocolate and pecan cookie. The food is made with fresh ingredients on site and this comes through with the fine taste and flavours, thoroughly recommended as a place to try if you enjoy vegan food. Will definitely return, thank you for making it memorable.

This place is super cute and would be a nice place to hang out/do some work. I thought the food I got was only ok but I would go back again to try more - the brunch and desserts looked appetizing but I didn't get a chance to try either. Ordered the classic burger- the actual patty was pretty good but I wasn't a fan of their bread. The sauces they have- sriracha mayo and beet ketchup- are really good. They even went well with the mac & cheese I ordered. As I'm not a vegan, I have higher expectations from my mac & cheese but I still think it was good pasta.

I've never left a google review but feel it's about time! I'm vegetarian and my sister is vegan so we were excited when we arrived to see all of the choices on the menu. I chose the hot chicky sandwhich and iced tea and it came to £13.50. I went up to get my tray and what I saw looked like a McDonalds 99p burger. It was blocks of flavorless coated tofu and raw red cabbage saturated in a hot sauce and was completely inedible. My sister ordered chicky pieces which were the same flavorless tofu blocks. It was the most over priced and most disgusting food I've ever bought. Avoid eating here to save your money and your stomach!

The people that work here are really sweet. The food is amazing. The menu has everything you would want at a Vietnamese restaurant but usually cannot get as a vegetarian or vegan. Do yourself a favor and order one of their bbq tofu buns...I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Cool chairs and I love that it's vegan, The mac n cheese was disappointing. But they were happy to replace it for us with something else. The chips is pretty good, and so is the lime lemonade. A bit pricey.

Good food, decent prices but very limited choices. Would love to have more options. Located in the heart of the city and is 10mins walk from Trafalgar Square so should be worth a try if you are around Covent Garden The Thai salad is really filling, the burger is just average.Mac & cheese and arabiatta pasta are really good.

Loved their all vegan menu. What a dream! Man and cheese was the best I've had yet. Creamy, cheesy and smashing bacon bits - definitely double up on them! Sweet potato fries were nice and the kale, artichoke dip came with tortilla chips. The guac burger was also highly recommended. I'll be back for the banana bread, cookies and cupcakes!

Delicious food with good quantities and friendly service, all at a very reasonable price. I'm lucky to live so close to this restaurant. From what I understand, this is a full vegetarian restaurant that is run by Buddhist nuns. The decor made me feel like I was visiting another country, colorful and cozy. I'll be back very soon!

Outstanding plant based restaurant- we think it’s one of very the best in Portland. We now get carry out there at least once a week. I highly recommend the Vietnamese Crepe...so incredible. I love the Pad Thai..perfect balance of flavors and the Kung Pao is just the right amount of spice! Don’t hesitate to not order here...it won’t disappoint. This is the place you think about days later and what a great food experience!

What happened to the nuns🥺? Not the same without them. The pork belly is three times smaller than what we used to get, and 30% more expensive. No way am I going back. This place USED TO BE the best vegan restaurant in Portland. Very, very sad.

It’s a really nice place, great ambience with very helpful staff. We had the quinoa taco and the pesto meatball. Both were recommended by the staff so went halves with a friend. I would recommend the pesto meatball all day everyday. Taco quinoa was slightly disappointing especially as it was highly recommended. The pesto meat ball was hitting levels. The fries were good we had the option of doing the mixed so sweet potato and normal fries. The Marconi cheese was not very good. Not sure what the truffle was all about but we had burnt bits. But in terms of flavour and taste it was lacking. But it was nice to get a free cookie which was kl

Really LOVED by Chloe. A fantastic vegan restaurant in the heart of London. This was the second one I have visited and loved the food. Burgers are gorgeous, fries are amazing. It’s a bit pricer due to the quality but we took a couple of cakes home and they were exquisite. More of these need to pop up across London. Great service too.

Nice place, great for vegans. The Mac&Cheese was great, the rest of the food unfortunately was a liiiiiittle bland, it could have done with much more seasonings. All in all good value for money and relatively healthy fast food options!

  • 1/5 hello A. 3 years ago on Google
1.5 stars. I can't comment on the atmosphere because I ordered my food online but the food did not live up to its expectations. I ordered the guac burger and it was fine. the sweet potato fries were ok but the thai salad was beyond bland. no flavour whatsoever. it relied heavily on the flavour of the meat replacement and on the dressing but neither of them tasted good. I also ordered the macaroni and it was both dry and, again, tasteless. incredibly overpriced for the quality of the food. I will never order food from here again, nor will I recommend it to my other vegan/vegetarian friends.

I'm not vegan but I enjoyed their burger with fries. My sister's "fish and chips" was pretty inedible as the tofu "fish" was tough and flavourless. Drinks were good. Would try again, without the tofu fish.

The place itself is cool but it looks like a lot more attention has been put into the branding and interior design than on the food itself. The food was very bland and overpriced for what it is. Nice beetroot ketchup though!

The staff was absolutely fantastic: nice, welcoming and helpful. I had the mac and cheese, which was good, but not mind blowing. The 'bacon' and parmesan on top of it were great. The whole place has a great vibe, although it's a tad expensive.

It's a sad day! Well before covid 19 hit, it appears this place was sold or taken over by someone other than sister co too. The prices increased by 40-50%, the menu was changed, the recipes seemed to change, the portions decreased and the food that is being served doesn't match the pictures they use in the menus. We used to go here all the time and it was wonderful. After a long hiatus, we decided to try it once again. Very disappointing! One dish was served without the sauce and only contained 4 pieces instead of the 6 pieces shown on the menu. We won't be back! They are way over priced for what you get. I'm sure at this rate, they won't be in business long.

Some of the best vegan vietnamese food I've ever had! The tofu skin in the buddha bowl is the best tofu skin I've ever tasted, and the rich flavor of the bun hue was incredibly tasty. Looking forward to coming back the next time I'm in Portland!

This place is absolutely fantastic. I’m not a vegan but can’t get over how excellent the food is. I literally stood in the kitchen wanting to scream and throw chairs in delight. 10/10 will order many more times.

I completely agree with Jeffrey Yen. I've been coming here since 2001. It's been a family favorite. My vegan sister from out of town and I always go there when she visits. The bill was so much higher on this last visit, they didn't have a couple of our classics, even when we requested them by name and the quality was not the same. We were both heart broken :(. We no longer consider this a go to when we're craving vegan thai or just a nice healthy, tasty lunch or dinner.

  • 4/5 Kurt A. 4 years ago on Google
A hole in the wall place for sure. Don't let the gravel parking lot and exterior deter you from trying this place. I ordered the green papaya salad and the vegan chicken rice...both were great. Great bang for your buck, good portion sizes and both dishes were under $9 each.

  • 5/5 Jacob M. 4 years ago on Google
Van Hanh's has reopened after they redecorated. They also have more staff working there and they updated their menu. I'm really glad to see more people working there, their service has been hit or miss depending on their staffing. I had their Hue's Spicy Noodle soup and it was amazing. The broth was dank and full of fresh herbs and flavor.

We had high hopes for this place and spent a good chunk of dough, but the food was really so sub par, we were shocked. You would think with the higher prices that they are serving high quality food, and the ratings make it seem that way too. The only thing I can actually recommend are the egg rolls, which were cooked well and tasted good but they're pricey at 3 for $5.50. I got the pad thai and it was so devoid of flavor yet overwhelmingly tasted like celery... who puts that much celery into pad thai? We also got the yellow curry, which was also super bland and had huge chunks of ginger in it (3 chunks the size of your thumb). Lastly, we got the orange chicken which faintly tasted like orange, but was super dry. Just overall, really disappointing. Will not be returning.

It was pretty decent. I got the steamed bun, egg rolls, spring rolls, orange chicken and Chow Mein. I would order via text or phone for the best ordering experience. The steamed bun was okay, I could have gone without it. It's more of a mush of non meats with a gravy like sauce. I added some peanut sauce for a tastier experience. The egg rolls were fresh and amazing. Super tasty especially with the sweet and sour sauce. The spring rolls were my absolute favorite. Especially with the peanut sauce. They were light, warm, and delicious. The orange chicken was not what I expected. It's not breaded but it is amazing how chicken like the texture is. The sauce was good. However, the rice I could have gotten without. It felt like there was more rice than chicken. The chow Mein was delicious. They added both meatless beef and meatless pork. I do wish they would have given a sauce or chili sauce but it was very satisfying. Overall 7/10 I would definitely get the rolls and chow Mein again.

New management/ownership? A once glorious institution has been ruined. It pains me to leave a poor review for a business that I've loved for at least a decade but it isn't the same business anymore. And while I want to see every restaurant survive the pandemic I feel that everyone needs to know that the old reviews are no longer true. Van Hanh used to my my go-to place for Vietnamese food. The nuns were like my aunties and cousins and there were always folks from the temple coming and going throughout the day. Service was slow and sometimes not even friendly but for me that was part of the appeal - it was like family. And, just like with family, the food was amazing. Cooked with care and completely consistent with generous portions just like family would pile on your plate regardless of how hungry you might be. Sadly everything has changed. The old guard doesn't seem to be around, the dining room has been remodeled and the menu as been reduced. One might this that this would lead to better food but it was the quirky stuff that was the best. And the quality has fallen. My last two experiences have been marred by overcooked and soggy vegetable and completely inconsistent flavoring. I've had sauce that was overwhelmingly strong and salty and I've had sauce that was nowhere to be found. But that's not all, my cherished and cheap $2 steamed buns have been ruined. They where practically a meal to themselves and filled with delightfully seasoned vegetables. The last two times I ordered them the rice flour was a sticky mess that was inedible in places and the filling was bland and had the most foul texture. I write this, heartbroken, for a place I once loved. Maybe in a few weeks I will try again to see if some of the recent bad reviews are taken to heart and the quality improves. If it does I will be overjoyed to edit this to reflect not only a return to quality but a responsiveness to the loyal clientele. I will wait with fingers cross but not with breath held...

Amazing. A hidden gem in Portland. Doesn’t get the respect it deserves from local blogs and tourist recommendations, but I love it because it’s wonderfully fast, delicious, and consistent. Great value, and love their giving mentality. I know they donated hundreds of meals to local hospitals and charities during the COVID crisis. Can’t get enough of Van Hanh ❤️🔥

We walked in when we saw this place on Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t full. The food lived up to our expectations, vegan doesn’t always need to be healthy, right? Mac n cheese and sweet potatoes were good, also the chipotle sauce. There’s also a tap for you to refill the bottle or take a plastic glass to drink. There’s a little section where you can buy some coffee related items and lemonade. In general, the service was friendly, even though they prepared a wrong meal for my friend. The exchange was smooth and easy. Definitely a good place for a quick bite.

Excellent vegan ‘junk food’. I always get the Caesar salad and love it! The staff are very friendly and there’s plenty of space (unlike the NY branch). ALSO gender neutral bathrooms and very accessible for those using wheelchairs. And all the cutlery/bowls/plates are recyclable/compostable and they use seasonal veg in the dishes. I really appreciate how the company operate and so will continue to support them.

The service here was excellent, we were recommended the beet burger which my partner thoroughly enjoyed. We were also offered a taster of the seasonal lemonade (pomegranate & ginger) to help us decide on our drinks choice. The food arrived relatively quickly and was delicious, you completely forget it’s a vegan version as the quality stands on it own without having to compare to their meat counterparts.
