The Monestario is full of history and the location is fantastic overlooking the City of Guimarange. The views and gardens wonderful. All the staff are first class and very professional. Incredible dining rooms..meals are of the highest quality. A must visit. We recommend this hotel 👍👍😎

Staying at the pousadas of Portugal is entering a rich history and culture, whilst enjoying modern creature comforts. This was my second time, and it did not disappoint. I can’t imagine the maintenance of the rooms, buildings and grounds. Both were managed by the Small Luxury Hotel chain; co-branded with Hyatt. Meals are excellent with many local, typical dishes. If those portraits could talk, the Donas would have much to tell us! A lovely respite! The city of Guimares is historical as the birthplace of Portugal and is lovely and full of culture.

Absolutely gorgeous place, the common rooms are like a museum. Hotel rooms are more modest, but fully functional. Beautiful view from up on the hill, and a short ride from town

This hotel is a real gem - visited early April. Location on a hill overlooking the town is fantastic. The rooms are very well designed and the overall interior of the hotel is fantastic. I would highly recommend the restaurant - the dinner was so exquisite and the service impeccable. Breakfast is absolutely amazing, too. The highlight for me though is the extensive garden at the back with a stunning orange trees grove - absolutely magical place. Cannot wait to go back!

Stayed here years ago, had to come back and show my friends. On top of a hill over looking Guimarães, this hotel is stunning. Large & gorgeous back gardens with orange trees, lots to see and explore. The restaurant is delicious, the rooms are quaint and charming: a truly beautiful stay.

Nice hotel in an impressive building, with excellent views, and plenty of space and beautiful gardens. Breakfast is plentiful, and dinner was tasty (with an amazing dessert buffet). However, there are a few downsides, which have led to rate the Pousada with four stars: (A) electricity in the room is switched off upon leaving the room. Really difficult to charge phones, laptops, etc (at checkout I was informed that at the front desk they could disable this…too late for me!) (B) staff at the front desk is not friendly. When I would say “good morning”, there was just silence by the team members at the reception (being a guest you would expect to be greeted by those who are working at the hotel). I really did not feel welcome by those who checked us in, and with those with whom we interacted at the reception (C) the hotel was built in 1985, and it seems that not much has been done since then. There is plenty of wear and tear, and a refreshing of the facilities is urgently in need (D) there are so many orange trees in the garden, and despite this, there is only an orange fluid available at breakfast (which can’t be called “orange juice”, as it is some chemical beverage). Why isn’t natural orange juice served from the trees that grow in the garden?

Fabulous and lovely hostess, homely grounds and cottage, lovely cottage garden and pool and the two dogs (lab and beagle), just awesome. Really lovely stay with easy walk to restaurant or two or quick drive in to town for others and supermarket etc. Recommend highly.

Absolutely magical. The staff are exceptional and go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The monasterio is certainly a luxury hotel but the essence of it's historical past is still retained. A truly wonderful experience.

The pool access is kind of pricey (30€) and the pool is not that big, but the place is beautiful and the staff is friendly

This hotel is in a very beautiful and interesting historical monastery. A great part of the experience is walking around exploring the various parts of the facility and art work; the gardens are also very beautiful. The service was excellent from all the staff, but especially Leandro at reception and the wait staff at dinner. Also, kudos to the chef; we had dinner there and it was excellent. Would definitely recommend having dinner there.

It's beautiful and comfortable. Also, it's comfortable to walk and look around in or outside the hotel. The staff is nice and helpful. The breakfast is good and the breakfast room is beautiful!

Lovely old communal rooms with a 25-minute walk (or quicker drive) into a vibrant old town full of interesting buildings and with a lively cafe culture. The buffet breakfast was plentiful, and many people appeared to be enjoying a good time around their lovely pool.

Special and Exquisite. Driving up to the place that looms up the hill and gets more impressive and more beautiful. The gardens are worth the time and if possible a solitary meditative walk through it. The grand rooms - ah if the walls could speak. We 'retired' to one of them to enjoy a scotch before dinner, and felt positively royal. The fact that there is modern electricity and plumbing in a place this old but still maintaining the cloistered look and grand ambience is so impressive. Great WiFi too. A respectful walk through the adjacent cemetery for those who want to take a peak into the past - but just be cautioned the peal of the bell from the church is surprisingly loud, be prepared to exceed your vertical leap record if unprepared. Only negative I would mention is that there was a leak in one of the grand rooms, and it could be that there was construction ongoing, but the nonchalance of the staff seemed to belie the severity of potential damage. Do NOT miss dining there and we know the fish, the goat and the risotto were superb.

Love the location, the view and the hospitality of the hotel staff. You should take time to stroll in the garden (if it is not raining) and the salon has a baby grand which is inviting for people to play a song or two. We enjoyed our time there!

Where do you start with this hotel... It's just great at every level. The building and gardens are delightful and there are a number of preserved state rooms to look around as well as the exquisite cloister. The Monastery church is interesting too in the baroque style with a magnificent pipe organ (under going some renovation) The room was spacious and modern with every convenience. We stayed 2 nights had dinner on the 1st night. Great service in the delightful bar and in the restaurant. It was a great meal and reasonably priced. THe staff here were fantastically helpful. Our favourite place during our 2 weeks in Portugal. Highly recommended.

Loved everything about this hotel, it is absolutely stunning. The gift that was left in my room on Christmas Eve was so special and well thought that I brought it back to Ireland and will be framing it, to always remember my time in Guimarães.

The room was very spacious and on the garden level. Toiletries in the bathroom are very nice. The vibe is very unique. It's a shame the garden rooms have a rail and can't access the garden. Aircon is a bit noisy during the night. Breakfast as nice as it is, unfortunately not meeting a 5star rating.

I was treated to this hotel for my birthday earlier this year - the staff were incredibly kind and friendly and made us feel very welcome, from check in, to the surprise in our room and at dinner. The hotel is beautiful and full of history. The view over Guimarães is incredible from the elevated position on the hill. Swimming pool wasn’t open in March as it was still too cold, but we plan to return when it is open. The food in the restaurant was excellent and worth the experience in the stunning room - there is plenty of room between tables and there is a good dessert buffet! You also have the birthplace of Portugal on your doorstep. I can definitely recommend this hotel and plan to return very soon.

Awesome hotel. Our highlight was the staff. Everyone was incredibly nice and helpful. Great building and delicious food. We stayed at the master suite which was very spacious. Only complaint is the bed in our room made loud creaking noises when we moved, often waking us up. Will definitely stay there again.

Had a great visit. Staff were superb, extremely helpful. Breakfast was also excellent. The hotel has made attempts to improve accessibility, unfortunately the historic cobblestones and various other constraints makes it difficult for anyone with walking problems or in a wheelchair. Despite that, thanks for a good stay. Well worth the extravagance!

Great place to enjoy with our family. We could find everything there, bar, restaurant, great places to take beautiful pictures. The only thing that bothers a bit is the musty smell in the room.

A beautiful venue. We did not stay here as guests, but attended a show. However, the staff, food, and ambiance have all been fantastic.

Comfortable large rooms. Fascinating buildings, fun to explore, very historical. Extensive interesting gardens. Great food. Dinner was fine cuisine. Breakfast buffet was traditional. Nice lounge with log fire.
