Usually
when
we
have
dinner
plans
that
get
derailed
we
are
too
hungry
and
tired
to
make
a
good
decision
and
end
up
eating
something
or
somewhere
less
than
stellar.
But
tonight
we
planned
to
eat
at
the
Commonwealth
since
our
last
visit
to
St
Louis
involved
dining
at
the
Grand
Tavern
(which
was
the
amazing
restaurant
previously
in
the
space
now
occupied
by
the
Commonwealth)and
for
whatever
reason
they
were
closed
even
though
their
website
and
Google
says
they
are
open.
So
when
we
searched
for
a
replacement
restaurant
we
were
expecting
disappointment
based
on
our
track
record.
However,
this
place
was
a
perfectly
unassuming,
welcoming,
truly
delicious
delight.
Their
cocktail
menu
was
inventive
while
classic,
their
food
menu
was
modern
yet
authentic
(my
husband's
grandmother
hails
directly
from
Scotland
complete
with
a
family
haggis
recipe),
and
the
server
was
the
kind
of
subtely
attentive
where
you
hardly
notice
they
are
there
yet
always
have
exactly
what
you
need.
So
forget
the
Commonwealth!....,
we'll
be
eating
here
again
tomorrow
since
there's
more
on
the
menu
we'd
like
to
try.
(For
the
record
we
had
the
gathering
appetizer
sampler,
both
salads,
fish
and
chips,
and
the
lamb
shank
with
both
old
fashioneds
and
2
of
the
gin
cocktails.
*Just
an
update,
we
did
in
fact
eat
here
again
the
next
night.
Enjoyed
the
duck
wellington,
the
hen
stuffed
with
haggis
and
the
berry
tart
along
with
the
draft
cocktail
which
was
a
standout
and
the
spiked
spiced
cider.
Again
excellent
food
and
service!
