I
will
start
by
saying
if
you
are
someone
who
prefers
to
have
a
family
member
or
partner
with
you
while
seeing
an
OBGYN,
I
suggest
going
somewhere
else.
I
will
share
my
experience
below
in
hopes
that
no
one
else
goes
through
this,
and
in
hopes
that
staff
misconduct
will
be
addressed.
I
went
in
for
a
regular
check
up
and
told
the
first
nurse
I
saw
that
I
wanted
to
have
my
partner
in
there
with
me.
I
have
had
experiences
where
OBGYNs
have
made
me
feel
uncomfortable
when
I
was
alone
and
my
partner
has
medical
experience,
so
I
wanted
him
there
to
help
me
feel
safe
and
understand
different
medical
terms.
I
am
also
a
Black
woman,
which
unfortunately
means
I
have
had
my
experiences
and
preferences
ignored
by
medical
professionals
on
multiple
occasions.
However,
when
my
partner
is
there,
doctors
will
at
least
listen
to
him
when
he
relays
my
concerns.
I
explained
all
of
this
to
the
nurse
and
she
told
me
that
they
do
not
typically
let
anyone
sit
in
while
seeing
patients,
but
she
went
to
ask
the
physician
if
it
was
okay.
After
being
told
again
that
my
partner
would
not
be
allowed
in
I
was
left
alone,
at
which
point
I
became
extremely
discomforted
and
stressed
by
the
idea
of
being
alone
with
an
OBGYN.
In
the
waiting
room
receptionists
argued
with
my
partner,
while
he
tried
to
explain
why
I
wanted
him
in
there
with
me.
I
waited
a
long
time
to
be
seen
and
eventually
decided
that
I
would
rather
go
elsewhere
than
force
myself
through
an
uncomfortable
experience.
So
I
left.
I
explained
to
the
women
at
the
front
desk
that
I
no
longer
felt
safe
or
supported
and
would
be
seeking
care
else
where.
(THIS
IS
WHERE
STAFF
BEHAVIOR
SEVERELY
CROSSED
THE
LINE)
I
left
the
office
and
the
second
I
exited
the
door
I
started
crying
because
I
was
so
upset.
My
partner
held
my
hand
and
we
waited
for
the
elevator.
One
of
the
receptionists
then
followed
us
out
to
the
elevator
and
blocked
us
from
leaving.
She
stopped
to
talk
to
us
because
she
"wanted
to
be
polite"
and
then
proceeded
to
be
both
condescending
and
disrespectful.
She,
another
Black
woman,
looked
me
in
my
face
and
told
me
that
"They
actually
do
let
people's
partners
in
with
them,
and
that
I
should
have
advocated
for
myself
better."
While
making
this
argument
she
admitted
that
she
was
not
there
in
the
room
and
did
not
know
who
I
communicated
with,
yet
she
was
certain
that
my
discomfort
was
my
own
fault.
Eventually,
after
a
slew
of
offensive
comments,
I
called
the
elevator
again
turned
my
back
to
her
and
left.
I
have
never
been
so
disrespected
in
a
medical
profession,
and
I
highly
suggest
the
people
in
charge
make
it
clear
to
staff
that
it
is
NEVER
appropriate
to
follow
a
patient
out,
especially
when
they
explained
they
want
to
seek
care
elsewhere.
This
sign
was
posted
in
the
doctor's
office,
needless
to
say
they
did
not
meet
their
goal.
Having
read
through
a
lot
of
the
one-star
reviews,
I
recognize
that
employee
misconduct
and
"uncaring
staff"
are
a
reoccurring
theme
at
Partners
in
Women's
Health.
