Palazzo Vecchio (literally means Old Palace) is the symbol of the city of Florence, together with Santa Maria del Fiore and Michelangelo’s David, and has always been the seat of the city government. Palazzo Vecchio was built at the turn of the 14th century as the Palazzo de Popolo or the "Palace of the People" and throughout history has been called in several ways: Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio. It received its present-day name when the duke’s residence moved to the Pitti Palace across the Arno River. It was designed to accommodate the Priors and the Gonfaloniere of Justice (Gonfaloniere di Giustizia), the supreme governing body of Florence, later moved to the Palazzo del Bargello. It was built on the ruins of a palace that belonged to the Ghibelline Uberti family, expelled from the city in 1266 for its political position and remembered by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy. It's a huge fortress-like Romanesque palace with crenelated stone walls with Gothic windows that are adorned with the Florentine’s republic’s coats of arms, the façade is decorated with medallions and several sculptures can be seen around the building... this city hall is one of the most beautiful in all of Tuscany. The Palazzo Vecchio dominates Piazza della Signoria in the heart of the city, a square that is also home to a copy of the statue of David by Michelangelo and a gallery of sculptures. The square is nothing less than breathtaking and arguably one of the greatest in Italy. The historical conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, who inflamed the Florentine politics at the time of Dante, is also present in some architectural elements of the building: the gallery has a square battlement defined as “Guelph”, while the tower has a dovetail battlement, called “Ghibelline”... * Some photos courtesy of Internet. Thanks!

Awesome historical sight , go early and comfortably enjoy touring living history. Handicap accessible, just ask your ticket attendant to direct you. Elevator is small and the doors can close quickly with a thump but you will be able to reach floors 2 & 3 . The art work is breathtaking. * by going early you avoid the wait * Tickets are required

This place has lots to see and do in and around the area, it’s a very extraordinary place and I really enjoyed my time here. I would definitely recommend checking it out, the Palazzo is very nice and so are the museums here. Theres lots of lovely artwork, sculptures, statues, tapestries and other fine works to see. It’s definitely worth the visit.

If you’re a Florentine resident, definitely take advantage of the free Sundays at the museums! At Palazzo Vecchio, you can visit the old apartments and some of the secret/hidden areas of the Medici family. Very interesting and beautiful.

It started raining and we were told we needed to leave, and the tour guide promised us refunds. Then the employee at the desk refused to honor that, and said it was our problem that the place closed because it started to rain. Despite the tower being closed, THEY KEPT SELLING TICKETS FOR IT. The line is currently huge, and they're selling tickets without informing people that because of the rain the top part is closed, and since they refuse refunds, they're making a lot of money off of scamming us!

Impressive building of Florence with so much history inside of its walls. It is located centrally, very easy to be found. Tickets can be bought online or onsite. You need at least 2 hours for visit to see the main hall and the other rooms with all the art pieces which are hosted there.

(Translated by Google) Gorgeous museum. The ceilings blew me away. It deserves the 500 show and it was fun to look for the writing who seeks finds in the picture. Well kept and accessible cost: 12.50 adult. Too bad the dungeons and the geographical department were closed. (Original) Museo stupendo.

What can be said about this place. Simply beautiful and worth a visit if you’re more than a day in the city. It has beautiful rooms and halls and don’t forget to watch the ceiling above you! Although the line wasn’t too long, about 15 min (October, 11 PM), it’s highly recommended to book in advance, even a day or so before. Entry costs about 12€ (small discount for students) and another 12€ if you’re up to climbing the tower and the roof. Enjoyed it a lot.

We did not pre book tickets, and were fortunate there was no queue to get in. You may be familiar with some of it from the Dan Brown film Inferno (starring Tom Hanks). It's an impressive building, had a QR download code (free) as an audio guide. Largely influenced by the Medici family as was much of Florence, well worth a visit while you are there.

Another great historic building! I just toured the first courtyard, which is free by the way, and it was very nice. Also, keep an eye out for the mysterious face carving in the wall outside. According to Smithsonian magazine, it might have even been created by Michelangelo himself!

We did the secret passage with the kids. They loved it. It was almost one hour long with a guide. You have to leave your backpack in a locker near the ticket office, and you are not allowed to use camera flash. When you finish the secret passage tour, you stay inside and you also look at the normal exhibition. (And Dante's mask).

(Translated by Google) What can be said about something of such historical importance? You can see the room of the five hundred, certainly first in size and importance and then a tour of the innermost rooms, extremely beautiful. Even not being experts or historians you can appreciate everything. Fun to spend 1-2 hours. The ceilings are the high light. One time visit since the rooms were not that special except for the ceilings. Lower floor and free rooms on ground floor were still closed due to covid even though there are no restrictions anymore. Does not look like it will open anytime soon…

Pallazzo Vecchio made an incredible impression on me! The interiors are very richly decorated, room 500 is literally breathtaking. This is definitely a must-see place in Florence! I recommend buying a ticket online a few days in advance, the cost is about €18, with the possibility of entering the Arnolfo Tower from which there is a beautiful view of Florence, it's really worth it!

(Translated by Google) Very nice museum, all kept with the utmost care ... Sore point is the closure of the room with the maps and the tower, it would be nice to place the maps in a room and show them anyway rather than piling them all in 3 meters of room! If you don't have the guide, you can't access some environments (Original) Museo molto bello, tutto tenuto con massima cura ... (Translated by Google) Visit August 2022 time 17:15...What does this mean...This particular palace has opening hours until 19:00 so typically we were the last group to enter since the duration of the visit is about 1.5 hours...Less people and so very quiet... Let's start from the beginning...electronic ticket at the price of 13.5 € (slightly pinched but it is a palace, the +1 is for the electronic), extra money to climb his tower (if you have climbed Giotto's bell tower I think not is it necessary...If online booking is needed? at the time I went there was not a single person waiting at the tickets... You enter the Museum on the ground floor (it's open to the public if you want to come in) there was a piano played by a lady...great we started...and off we go... Sights: 1. the hall of the five hundred (you look up and say wow), the point is that each room has its own artistic ceiling but the five hundred is a bit more because of its size, 2. the mask of Dante (a mask made from the face of the dead Dante), 3. the room of maps you know behind the map of Armenia there is a passage but you can't push it and go through because it's not allowed.... Also in summer with open windows you will have a view of the dome... Apart from the others, this museum also has something very positive... the place it is located, in piazza della signoria which has the doctor on horseback, the fountain of Poseidon, another copy of David, Persena with her head Medusa... Yes, if you have time it is worth your visit... Very cool place! I found it very interesting and informative. I love when museums are both great historical building AND contains great art and artifacts. This has it all. This is the only museum of this kind I did in Florence, so can’t say if it’s better than the rest… I wanted to see the ceiling and the Dante Mask, and (at least try) to see the hidden doors (Unfortunately the tour for this was fully booked) :) We paid 17.5 euro, which is a lot (and prob could/should be cheaper…), but I found it well worth the money (didn’t do the tower). We “cheaped” out and bought at the place, I DO NOT recommend this, as staff is horrible and the least helpful people I’ve ever met. This is the first time in my life I’ve nearly yelled at (working) strangers… save the annoyance and pay the online fee.

Really great! Even after seeing a ton of great ceiling and church art, this was over the top. Not so much about the church as about an insatiable ego. It's all about Cosimo and the family. Fascinating.

An important palace with a ton of history. Today it serves as both city hall of Florence and a museum where you can find part of the Medici art collection. Ceilings and walls are covered with beautiful paintings. It’s a real treat to walk through the building. Recommend visiting earlier during the day as it tends to sometimes be crowded with tour groups.

Great place. However sometimes tower access is limited due to number of visitors. If it is your case you can still get a ticket to museum that is also gorgeous. Museum by itself is fine and the view from its windows are cool. Overall nice experience.

Museum: Great museum, all in good condition, nice overview off all the paintings in every room, free to walk at own pace and study all the amazing details on the infinite paintings and decorations. Every room has a layout drawing with references to all the paintings in the room linked to the mythological stories that inspired the paintings. Each room has an air fan for the guards but also cools the room a bit down ^^ Tower: Nice climb to the top of the bell tower. Limited number of people allowed at the same time which gives you the space to walk and climb at own pace. When reaching the top you have a great view over Firenze. They installed a little viewing platform so you can safely take in this amazing view upon the city while the wind blows through your hair and the sun tans your skin. Halfway the stairs you have a small room with a bench. Perfect for a minute of rest during the climb. Excavations: The excavations underneath the Palazzo show the remains of a Roman Style theatre. You can walk on the scaffolds and experience the excavations from the first row. If you download the “izi.travel” app, you can play an audio tour via your smartphone and listen to the detailed stories to each room/place. They installed some nice entertainment devices to help you understand the history of the buildings and to point out the layers of buildings that where build on top of each other over the ages. It’s a bit chilly down there so perfect to run away from the Italian Summer Weather ;) Overall a great experience and definitely recommended!

Located in Piazza della Signoria this former seat of municipal government now serves both as town hall and a museum. The entrance to the building is famously guarded by Michelangelo's David. Inside there are displays of renaissance art sculpture and frescoes. The tickets are 12.50 Euro for the entrance to the palace but if you want to go up to the top of the tower, its another 12.50, which in my opinion is not worth it.

Preposterously overlooked compared to other sites, Palazzo Vecchio is Florence’s most interesting and “authentic” site. Still serving as the seat of the municipality, it j’ai use the republican signoria, as well as the first Medici dukes. It is the most interesting 12-century and onward building. Make sure you do not miss it.

I bought tickets online, expecting huge crowds, but at 9:45 in the morning, there were hardly any people. Could’ve saved the €1x4 online booking fee for me and my family. This was for early October, but maybe in the height of summer, it might be wise to get your tickets in advance. If you’re not into history and are only interested in visually striking rooms and displays, I think this place ranks average.

Very interesting place to learn about the political history of Florence and art history included Leonard da Vinci and Giorgio Vasari. Impressive frescos and gold ceilings, beautiful view of the city from the top floor. The room of the 4 elements is fascinating and gorgeous! There are quite a bit of steps to climb but they have an elevator. There is also a a bathroom which is always helpful after being out and about all day exploring. The lines can get long so I suggest a ticket with timed entry!

Best view of the cathedral and dome in town! We wanted to check out best views and tried the Duomo as well as the Piazza Michelangelo. The Bell Tower at the vecchio was by far the best view of the main cathedral in dome. It's set up perfectly and there are multiple views on the way up. It's much less busy than the actual duomo and is also attached to a beautiful museum. The Palazzo itself is incredible! We got lost so look for signs! The museum is mostly painted rooms and some incredible inlay woodwork pieces. In the piazza outside there is a water filler and it has two options. One for sparkling water (con gas) and the other is naturale. Didn't love the museum as much as some of the others but if you want good views, check out the tower! Tickets sell out so be sure so get them in advance if possible. We got there early enough that we got some of the last tickets if the day in off-peak (closes early on certain days).

Palazzo Vecchio and the tower on the top is an icon of Florence. Huge ancient building full with masterpieces, sculptures, paintings, special equipment, fully decorated rooms and ballrooms, dozens of really amazing places. Palazzo Vecchio have been in charge as the City Hall of Florence through the hundreds of years but now it is a gallery and a exhibition complex. It worth to visit the Palazzo Vecchio at the evening because it’s open until 21 or 23 oclock, and after 8 PM it’s almost empty of tourists and you can visit calm and wonder the wealth of Florence. Must see place in Florence, we really loved it.

My family stopped by here a couple of time in June. We got very lucky and got to see the Calcio fiorentino parade before the matches. This Palazzo has so much history and it hold Dante’s death mask. The climb to the top has a lot of stair so be ready for that, also the Roman ruins under the site are worth a trip.

The view from the terraces is beautiful. Very nice climb to the tower but the view is poor (bell tower recommended). However, the cathedral can be seen very well. Visit it, I warmly recommend it.

I loved it because I am familiar with the Medici family and also fascinated by the Roman gods. It’s amazing the house has been around this long and to see the artistic element is constant throughout the palace is amazing. They have descriptions in English able to appreciate the different artistic elements and the stories are construed in all of the various coverings so many of the walls and ceilings throughout. I did not climb the tower additional fee but I’m sure you would get an incredible view of the Duomo and the rest of Florence. My favorite room was Eleanor’s private chapel. Great art in there. It was also fun to see all the field trips in the Florentinian children who are raised on art. You will also see Dantes mask. There were audio guides but you had to rent those in advance. I’m not sure how. I found the descriptions in each room to be enough. They said there was also going to be a guided tour in English at noon but that time wasn’t convenient for me so I do not know how good it was. I found it helpful to take a picture of each of the descriptions so I could take time to look at each of the images without crowding the board the entire time. It was quite busy even opening time on Monday.

I was really impressed by the place. The Medici really lived like kings of the World. The views from Cosimo's office was supercool, as well as Vasari's architecture, paintings and everything.

My wife and I accidentally found ourselves in the place thinking it was a different museum but we were pleasantly surprised with how magnificent it was. We loved getting to see all of the amazing ceilings and rooms that the Medici family once lived in. The main hall was also just incredible and I would recommend this place to anyone who visits Florence.

prime symbol of political power in the city of Florence. Its cultural and architectural prominence rose primarily during the Medici dynasty. Located in the heart of the Piazza del Signoria, this iconic structure serves today as the city’s town hall as well as a museum.

Despite having very few people in the museum, the person asked me to wait 10 minutes for the actual time of the tickets. The online purchase costs 1 euro more, which should actually cost less. I recommend buying in place to avoid extra cost and waiting.

What a place? Magnificent! All this art and the view from Arnolfos tower were something perfect. You have to be careful with the tickets,it is very rare to find ticket for the same day so it’s better to book a ticket online from the official site couple of days before you go

I wouldn't recommend visiting the museum. The staff was not very friendly. Perhaps the only interesting thing is the room of 500 and even there you don't have enough information about the room and the art inside.

  • 5/5 Sumanta C. 11 months ago on Google
Did not went inside the main museum. But overall looked very good. Frescos throughout the wall and the structure was great as well. There was not much crowd inside, but huge gatherings outside. Also there is a replica of David outside.

As many landmarks in the historical center of Florence, this museum abounds in paintings, fine objects, decorations and so on. Fresh (NOT plastic !) flowers, in huge bouquets, adorn the stairs. Our comfortable and serene modern life has countless roots in Florence, a crucible of arts and knowledge. Viewing and understanding the past helps to leap into the future.

Palazzo Vecchio is a historic palace in Florence that has served as the city's seat of government for centuries. It features a mix of architectural styles and is adorned with stunning art. My husband and I explored its many rooms, including the opulent Salone dei Cinquecento, which boasts a ceiling fresco by Giorgio Vasari. It's a beautiful historic building worth a visit. Suggest buying the ticket in advance since the lines can get long.

  • 5/5 Alexander S. 9 months ago on Google
It's less popular than some neighborhood museums but definitely deserves a visit. Great historical place.

  • 5/5 Casey R. 11 months ago on Google
The Palazzo Vecchio is spectacular, architecturally, historically, and artistically. The museum provides an opportunity to see the opulence of the Medici chambers as well as beautiful, pre-Medici decoration still visible on the mezzanine level. Every room is breathtaking and it’s incredible imagining anyone living their daily lives in spaces as decorative as these/ We went on a Tuesday around 4pm and had an amazing time. (The tower was sold out by then but we didn’t mind.) The museum was not crowded so we took our time in each room, reading about the history and art of each space. The most difficult part of the visit was finding the ticket office, which is in a corner by the book shop. There are also many stairs to climb and I didn’t see elevators, so ADA access may be a barrier to entry.

Beautiful building. The Medici family lived here. The ground floor is free to visit. Upper 2 floor are museum and top most is still the Mayor's office. You'll appreciate the frescos on the wall

Great historical stop in Florence. Beautiful palace architecture, ornate decoration, and intense sculptures. Tickets aren’t too expensive and you can see the whole thing in about an hour.

  • 4/5 Paul B. 4 months ago on Google
Palazzo Vecchio is a museum where you can see Renaissance art and architecture, though it still remains the center of local government and the office of the mayor of Florence and sometimes certain parts of the building may be closed as a result . The building was largely influenced by the Medici family and has beautiful rooms halls and ceilings and is well worth a visit. Backpacks and bags are not allowed inside Palazzo Vecchio or the tower, but lockers are available free of charge at the entrance by the ticket office. The tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city as it is its 95 mt heigh and there is 233 steps to the top, this requires a separate ticket ( but we'll worth it) and as numbers are limited, I would pre-book this. You get great views over the whole of the city.

Palace is pretty interesting and exploring the rooms was a beautiful experience. Climbing the tower was by far the best part and the views were the best in Florence!

Nice museum, good to visit with kids (but not too small). Mainly it is walls decorated with paintings. As a bonus, there is roof a terrace to enjoy a view on neighbor roof. Also there is a gallery above the main hall, quite impressive to see it from top
