Worth it to experience the incredibly old history of this place. After looking around the church they let you upstairs, which has an amazing view of Florence as well. In October 2022 it was open on Tuesdays and Saturdays and was necessary to book a time slot in advance.

I need to look into when I can go upstairs to see the original statues. Orsanmichele was a grain market but transformed into a church in the 14th century in the Gothic style. The exterior has 14 niches which were sponsored by each of the city guilds and decorated with statues of their patron saints.

This is a very nice and unique church and museum, it has a very awesome collection of artwork, sculptures, artifacts, statues and paintings. It’s very educational, interesting and informative. I really enjoyed my time here; the museum has a very nice layout and its collection is very well preserved. I would definitely recommend checking out this museum when visiting Florence.

Very interesting location, not very crowded, book tickets from ticketing office one day in advance. Ticketing office is around the corner. Views of Florence from top floor, and interesting art works can be seen. The collection consists of works by Verrocchio, Ghiberti, Baccio da Montepulo and Donatello, and houses the original statues, replicas of which can still be on the facade of the same building. The St. George original, which is a very important work by Donatello is not to be found here but at the Bargello upper rooms

Orsanmichele is a church in Florence. The building was built on the site of the kitchen garden of the monastery of San Michele, which no longer exists. The church is less known and simpler. With an extremely large number of beautiful buildings, it is easy not to pay the attention it deserves.

You can only go in at certain times on Tuesday and Saturday. You choose what time when you buy your ticket on the back side of the building. There are 6 different times you can visit on either of those days: 10:30 11:40 12:50 2:15 3:25 4:35 You get 20 minutes on each of the 3 levels, with many stairs.

A great place to spend an hour or two. It's free and the church has beautiful artwork and architecture. There is an upstairs area with a museum of statues which also has views of the Florentine rooftops

Almost halfway along Via Calaziuoli, the road with a high tourist density that connects Piazza del Duomo with Piazza della Signoria, we come across a large building with an unusual shape, embellished on the outside by numerous statues: it is the Orsanmichele complex. Originally conceived as a municipal granary (near a vegetable garden named after San Michele Arcangelo) it was subsequently transformed into a church: the loggia on the ground floor was closed at the end of the fourteenth century, and the interior was also embellished by the grandiose tabernacle in marble and mosaics, a fourteenth-century work  by Andrea Orcagna , which contains a Madonna with Child painted by Bernardo Daddi. The four sides of the building are characterized by numerous tabernacles , mainly created by medieval arts and crafts guilds : many of the niches contain sculptures depicting their respective patron saints; these are mostly works from the Early Renaissance, among which we admire masterpieces by Donatello, Ghiberti, Verrocchio; most of the originals of these works are found elsewhere (such as Donatello's San Giorgio, at the Bargello) or in the Orsanmichele museum set up on the top floor of this same splendid building, both civil and religious.

It's small, but well worth the 4€ to enter. It's a quiet church/museum, which means you have all the time and space you want to observe details of the church and statues. You can also get really up close to the statues in the museum, which allowed me to notice all the finer details I missed before). I recommend going in with Rick Steves' audio guide loaded on your phone to give your visit more meaning. Note that it's only open at very specific times on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Interesant. Frumos. Merita văzut. Orsanmichele is a rather long name for a church, comprised of three different words all compressed into one. First documented in the year 895, it stood as an oratory in the monastery St. Michael (San Michele). The construction was surrounded by a vegetable garden (orto) belonging to the Benedictine monastery. Thus the name, a bit modified over the years, became known as: Or - San - Michele. The austre external portion of the church shows that it is set on three floors, much like an office building, and it is a mix of simple walls in gray stone, intricate Gothic arches and windows, outdoor nichè with various sculptures and, even if you look for it, you won't find a regal formal “front” door. The entrance to the church is around the corner in the back. The original structure was destroyed in 1239 and around 1290 Arnolfo di Cambia was hired to build a loggia for the market. This building, made of wood, was again severely damaged in a fire and rebuilt again in 1336 as a market and grain storage area, on commission of the Silk guild (union of silk workers). As you wander around the square floorpan, look up to the frescoed arches and you will notice large metal rings embedded in the ceiling, these were used to load and unload the heavy blocks of grain.

(Translated by Google) In the covid era we were unable to enter even though we would have liked it very much. Even the exterior alone justifies the richness and beauty of this building. Some statues had been sculpted by Donatello (original in the Bargello). Instead, we wanted to report inconsistencies in the ticket sales point in front of the church. The ticket for the convent of San Marco was indicated at 8 € + 3 € presale but we bought the ticket directly in San Marco for 6 €.

Such a shame, this used to be a really nice place to visit. It was free and the artists would sit around and sketch. Now getting in is a circus, paying €7 for a ticket for what used to be free and you can’t even enter when you want or move about freely. All very strange and unnecessary. Won’t return. Too bad another victim of Covid this beautiful place.

Was following the free Rick Steve’s Audio tour of Renaissance and came upon this church with it’s famous sculptures around all 4 sides, including works by Donotello, Ghinerti, and Verrochio, as well as the first freestanding bronze statue since antiquity. The inside of the church (free admission) with its two naves is interesting, too. Definitely stop on the way from the Duomo to the Uffizi Galleries.

This beautiful church was originally planned as a grain market in 1337. It's beautiful inside and outside, where we can find copies of statues made by famous artists like Donatello and Brunelleschi, among others. The originals are in museums.

(Translated by Google) The history of this structure is closely linked to the development of the city as a commercial power, guaranteed by its artisan companies, which then competed to enrich it. Many originals have been moved to be better kept, but the overall charm remains unchanged. An ancient and beautiful church. Not one of the richest or most luxurious in Florence, but still stunning and there is no need to wait in line to enter. It's worth a quick stop, if only to cool off a bit of the heat outside.

While most tourist are exploring the many goldsmith workshops and many master craft-men working at their leather goods. I am always amused with the plentiful sculptures scattered all around the city. Walking down Via dei Calzaiuoli on your way to Piazza della Signoria, you can’t miss these ornate statues nestled into the side of this building. Orsanmichele is now a church and Museum but was originally built as a grain market, and between 1380 and 1404 used for Florence's powerful craft and trade guilds. Although this is a replica you can still feast your eyes on the magnificent work of the Flemish sculptor Giambologna (1529-1608), this is his interpretation of “Luke”. ⠀

(Translated by Google) The church is beautiful and very little known, but the real gem is the museum on the upper floors: a former barn that now houses a credible collection of fifteenth-century statues. The museum is only open on Mondays and Saturdays, and is free of charge. Also from the upper floor you have a breathtaking view of the basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore. First documented in the year 895 was destroyed few times in different situations rebuilt again in 1336 originally as a market, due to the many miracles issued first to a statue then to a fresco of "Madonna", due to the increase of pilgrims and worshippers the market became a church in the 14th Century. The Church is opened on Weekdays 10am-5pm closed on Monday, free entrance. The Museum only opens on Mondays.

On September 17, 2022, I was visiting Florence for half a day as a tourist. I saw this cute little church around the corner and followed the line assuming it was the ticket office for this specific location. The man sitting inside the ticket office started yelling at me when it was my turn: "which one do you want to visit ?" I asked him politely besides this church what other place he referred to. He then rolled his eyes and had such a hateful look on his face, again yelling at me: "I sell tickt for another place too. which place do you want to visit?" So I told him I would visit the one the ticket office is located. He threw the ticket at my direction after I made the payment. One can feel his anger in his yelling tone of voice and contempt on his angry face. He seemed very friendly to a white woman before me (smiling and allowing her to ask him questions and not getting agitated quickely). It did make me wonder whether it was because I am a colored person ? My ticket was for 10:30 am so I decided to walk around town to wait for my group time. unfortunately it started raining heavily as I walked across the bridge. When I managed to return in the rain it was a little after 10:30 so the back door for the tour was closed. I walked to his window and explained the situation. This time he obviouly was furious. He threw the ticket at my direction at the mercy of his "kindness" after he decided to let me join a later group. Such insult did not serve me well so I decided to visit other sites in town. I just told myself considering the money as a donation to the church. The ticket agent works at a religious site which is faith based yet it seems he has tremendous amount of anger and hatred in him. I am only here for half a day to visit a city supposed to be a place of appreciation of Italian arts. The ticket agent's poor service made those who was mistreated by his bad behaviors felt like dealing with an angry mob. I beleive the poor behavior of this specific church's ticket agent is not a good representation of Florence. World travelers share their experience upon returning home. Hope the management address this problem so other customers won't have to be abused by him any more.

(Translated by Google) Church of Orsanmichele. Bas-relief of the Plinth. In the back of the church, just to the right of the door, there is a small bas-relief that illustrates an episode, this would have "set the tone" for the construction of the church. The bas-relief narrates an episode relating to the horse of the deceased Michael, the horse one day lost one of his shoes, and when he arrived at the blacksmith he also lost his hoof, leaving those present surprised. Despite this, both the hoof and the shoe attached themselves to the horse's leg in a magical and surprising way. Faced with this event, those present and Michele's father did not hesitate to build the church of "Orsanmichele" which literally means "San Michele in the Gardens" given the presence of gardens in the surroundings at that time. The first church was then replaced by Arnolfo da Cambio's Logge del Grano, which later became the current building. The interior of the building shows that in the past there was a covered market and a place dedicated to the conservation of hay. (Original) Chiesa di Orsanmichele. Bassorilievo dello Zoccolo.

(Translated by Google) Church of St. Michael in Florence Chiesa e Museo di Orsanmichele The Orsanmichele Church (Orsanmichele) (or St. Michael's Vegetable Garden, derived from the abbreviation of the Italian Tuscan dialect word orto) is a church in the Italian city of Florence. The foundation of the church was originally the vegetable garden of St. Michael’s Monastery. Located on Calzaiuoli Road in Florence, the church was originally a grain market and was built in 1337. From 1380 to 1404, it was converted into a church for the major guilds of Florence. The first floor of this square building is a 13th century arch, originally used as a loggia for the grain market. The second floor is used as an office, while the third floor is used as one of the city’s barns to fight famine and siege. Later in the 14th century, various guilds were responsible for donating and building statues of their patron saints to decorate the facade of the church. Today, these sculptures have been replaced by reproductions, and the original works have been transferred to the museum.

The church is beautiful outside and in. Finding the door was a bit confusing - the door you'll probably come across first is actually a ticket office (not for the church, which is free) and you have to go to the other side to find the entrance. The statues outside were all gifted by different guilds and most of them were originally in bronze. Inside, the guilds also contributed to the decorations, each commissioning a painting of their particular saint. The central piece (though it's off to one side) is a tabernacle which was built to house an image of the Virgin Mary which is said to have miraculous powers.

(Translated by Google) It's a quiet place, so it's likely to pass by, but personally it's a recommended place in Florence. Bronze and marble sculptures on the outer walls are said to be patron saints of each guild. It might be fun to see the guilds of the saints by looking at the tools that the saint has and the motifs on the upper and lower frames. Each one has its own characteristics and is very interesting. The inside of the church was magnificent and beautiful, and the sculpture on the altar with the statue of Mary was wonderful. You can also find the remnants of what was used as a wheat warehouse (a hole in the left column). The second floor houses the original sculptures that were outside. It is a church with plenty to see, so if you have the time, I highly recommend you drop in!
