The Column of San Zanobi is a monument in the historic center of Florence, located in Piazza San Giovanni. It is a work from the 14th century that indicates the place where, according to popular tradition, an elm tree blossomed on January 26, 429, when the body of Saint Zanobi was transferred from San Lorenzo to Santa Reparata. The column is made of granite and is about 10 meters high. It is topped by a wrought-iron elm tree, symbolizing the miracle of the elm tree in bloom. The inscription on the column says: There was an elm tree in this place, which I was so greedy for that when it touched the coffin of the holy body / it suddenly produced miraculous leaves and flowers. In memory of whose / miracle the Christians / and the citizens of Florence erected here this column / with a cross as a notable sign in the place of the removed tree. In this place there was an elm tree that was dry, and when it touched the coffin of the holy body, it suddenly miraculously produced leaves and flowers. In memory of this miracle, Christians and citizens of Florence, in the place where the tree was removed, erected this column with a cross as a clear sign. Worth the visit.

San Zanobi was the first bishop of Florence. When he died, his remains were initially buried in the Church of San Lorenzo. Once the construction of the new cathedral was completed it was decided that the Saint should be transported to the new temple. It was January 26, 876 or 871, many trees had died due to frost, when they reached the Baptistery, the coffin of San Zanobi carried on the shoulders of the faithful touched an old elm tree which immediately flourished again. Thus it was that this column was placed in memory of this miracle.

Commemorative column in memory of the first Bishop of Florence. You almost get "lost" in the crowd of tourists who noisily crowd the Piazza del Duomo. Beautiful, it deserves more care and attention because in all this extraordinary beauty it "gets lost" in the background! Not to be missed!

(Translated by Google) Cipollino marble column surmounted by an iron tree and a cross. It was erected in the place where a miracle related to the cult of San Zanobi would take place: at the passage of the saint's relics, during the translation from the old cathedral of San Lorenzo to the new one of Santa Reparata on January 26, 429, a dry elm, in full winter, only by accidental contact with the sarcophagus, would be miraculously revived by making tender leaves appear. Built to celebrate the miracle of San Zanobi, so loved by the Florentines. The plant flourished again after being touched by the relic. History lives today in the monument in Piazza San Giovanni. Overwhelmed by the flood of 1966, suffocated by traffic for decades, it has now returned to new life. The other misadventure in 1501 was when the cross fell to the ground during the preparations for the feast of St. John. The pedestrianization , which took place in October 2009, freed the most beautiful square in the world from cars.

(Translated by Google) It is located in Piazza di San Giovanni, next to the baptistery. It consists of a marble shaft finished off by a crown of fire forged in iron and a cross. It was erected in the place where in 429, according to popular tradition, there was a miracle related to the cult of San Zenobio, although many historians delay it until the ninth century: during a transfer of the relics of the saint, the sarcophagus that contained, pushed by the crowd, brushed with the branches of a completely dried elm, which began to flourish, new buds were born. The date on which the original column was erected is not known with exactitude, although it is known that it was destroyed by the floods of 1333, reconstructed and rising again the following year. The cross that the crown was added in 1338. The column was torn down on two other occasions; in 1501 accidentally, during the preparation of the festivities of San Juan, and in 1966, because of the severe floods that the city suffered. It is worthwhile to stop to contemplate it.
