The Porta Romana, once known as the Porta San Pier Gattolino was the southernmost gate in the 13th-century walls of the Oltrarno section of Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. It stands at the confluence of a number of roads: accessed from north by Via Romana, Via de' Serragli, and Viale Francesco Petrarca. In addition, a central road along the Boboli Gardens begins near the gate, and allowed the inhabitants of the Pitti Palace to exit and enter Florence with minimal travel on city streets. Beyond the gates are the Via del Poggio Imperiale and Via Senese. The latter led to Siena and points south such as Rome, hence the name. When the majority of the defensive walls of Florence were razed in the 19th century, only a few, and sometimes partial gate structures were left standing including Porta San Gallo, Tower of San Niccolò, and this gate with a snippet of merlonated wall.

Beautiful old monuments. Old Roman city. You may visit free. Parking available in the area but not free. The area full of sight attractions and museums.Good to visit during the day and once in the night. Closed to the Collsseum just 3 minutes walking.

Was hoping to get into the Boboli gardens via the supposedly free entrance near here. But it was closed. Interesting walk there and back through non touristy neighborhoods of Florence on the far side of the Arno though.

Nice park area. Quite expensive to get in and you do not get much for your money. Coffee shop was closed. What makes it worth a price is the view over Florence

Beautiful historic archway for active traffic. More local people. Even more when I'm not here too.

This is Florence. In the middle of the street there is a huge door with walls and you guess the date, yes during renaissance. Just great. Walking down the gate appeared walking in 13th century. Nice experience.

Just a medieval gate that throttles traffic into Florence. Not much to see or do here.

Porta Romana ("Roman Gate") is a former city gate of Milan, Italy. In its present form, the gate dates back to the 16th century Spanish walls of Milan; its origins can be traced further back to the Roman walls of the city, which had a corresponding "Roman Gate" roughly in the same area. Porta Romana was the first and the main imperial entrance of the entire city of Milan, as it was the starting point of the road leading to Ancient Rome.

Very cool to see and walk right up to/touch. Love that it still has the big doors and seems to be well maintained and clean.

This is the southern gate access to Florence. If you're feeling hungry. There is a great pasticerria just on the outside of the inner city. It's called Moka Efti. It's on the western side of the round about by the gate. If you happen to be in the area. Tell the staff that Rick sent you. Don't forget, On your way out the door to tell them on the way out the door. Buon giornata.

A very cool, old gate that is immense in size. Just staring at it you can truly imagine yourself visiting Florence back in the rennaisance.

A cool place to walk into the historical centre, only a 15 min walk (maximum) and there are a few "local" places en route
