The detail in the sculpturing is amazing, but the story of the doors and the story the doors tell are remarkable. I was a little disappointed to hear that these are not the original doors, but preservation of history is understandably more important than my wanting to see the originals.

Among the many monuments that worth to be seen in Florence, it the Porta del Paradiso is one of the great works that some times remains hidden. It often happens that, focusing own attention on the most famous places in the city such as Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo, it is lost sight of the masterpieces that is possible to have under own eyes. One of the works that perhaps escapes the attention of visitors, despite being clearly visible in the Piazza del Duomo, is the so-called “Porta del Paradiso” (Heaven’s Door). This great masterpiece was made by the great sculptor and goldsmith Lorenzo Ghiberti in the first half of the fifteenth century. This door is in bronze and is located on the east side of the Florentine Baptistery and what it represents are the Old Testament Stories, divided into several panels in which the artist developed the story distributed in different episodes that, featured more than one in the same frame, range from the Creation of the Progenitors to the Union of Solomon with the Queen of Sheba.

This door is the 1:1 replica of the real one which is in the Opera museum at the other side of Santa Maria. If you dont plan to visit the museum you should take a closer look. Each panel is a different story from the bible.

Very complex and intricate, gilded carved doors, right across from the Cathedral and the bell tower. A must visit.

Probably the second 3D architecture made after the Indian temples it was something new when created Michelangelo who goes to Rome for completion of his project on seeing this gets so mesmerized by the carving that he calls it the gates to paradise Although the original ones which were pure gold sits in a museum this gold plated ones are simply marvelous The carvings depict incidents of old testament

You can't really see it with the metal gates blocking the story on the door itself.

In the year 1999, the year previous to JUBILEO 2000 of polish PAPA Juan Pablo the second. We visited the ancient land of the “ etruscos” La Toscana and it’s capital Florence. I can imagine why the “PARADISE DOORS” ARE LOCATED THERE…(in the duomo place, the same than the DAViD of Michelangelo) and why his HUGE writer DANTE inspired himself thanks to living near this MAGNIFICENT construction to write “ The DIVINE COMEDY”. I would like to highlight the hight altitude of the DOORS representing the HEAVEN & THE HELL. Many ANGELS there is all I remember represented there: all of them sculptures, in the same type than you can appreciate if you visit the “PORTICO de la GLORIA” MAGNIFICENT” too in la plaza del “ Obradoiro “where you can find them at the Breathtaking Santiago de Compostela’s Cathedral inside La comunidad autónoma of Galicia( ESP)(EU).

👍👍 I went to the exhibition today, I really liked it. There are pieces by artists who have marked contemporary history: Abramovic, De Chirico, Cattelan and many others. To date there are works from the period from 1960 to today. The works are rotated among all those available. I live not too far away....
