The
Fountain
of Neptune ( Italian : Fontana
del
Nettuno )
is
a fountain in Piazza
della
Signoria in
front
of
the Palazzo
Vecchio in Florence
The
statue
is
made
of
marble
and
bronze
and
is
560
centimeters
high.
The
fountain
was
made
from
1560
to
1575
by Bartolomeo
Ammanati on
the
occasion
of
the
marriage
of Francesco
I
de'
Medici to
Archduchess Joanna
of
Austria in
1565.
It
was
a
competition
that
Ammanati
won
with
its
design. He
took
Montorsoli 's
Fountain
of
Neptune,
which
he
had
made
in
1575, as
an
example
for
his
fountain
.
In
the
center
is
a
copy
of
the
marble
statue
of Neptune with
the
face
of Cosimo
I
de'
Medici . Around
it
are
bronze
statues
of
river
gods, Satyrs and
marble
horses. The
fountain
is
made
in
the Mannerism style
.
At
the
initiative
of Leopold
II
of
Belgium ,
a
bronze
adaptation
was
created
in
1903
in Laeken by
Giorgio
Sangiorgi.
