Right in the center of Piazza della Signoria, erected near Palazzo Vecchio is we can admire the beautiful Neptune Fountain (fontana di Nettuno) built by Bartolomeo Ammannati. It is the support of the fountain, where four horses pull his chariot amidst bronze statues of mythological creatures. The marine god is a symbol of power himself: the power of Cosimo I de’ Medici, who wished to mark his position as absolute ruler by renovating the urban spaces where the Florentine Republic’s monuments had risen over the centuries. You know what, like modern times, there were many bidders to make this. All the most important sculptors of the time submitted a proposal for Cosimo’s new fountain: from Giambologna to Baccio Bandinelli, from Benvenuto Cellini to Vincenzo Danti – but Bartolomeo Ammannati was the winner.

there are so many statues in the Piazza della Signoria that its easy to miss some real masterpieces. Such is sometimes the case with Neptune's fountain which is a wonderful piece of art yet is overshadowed by Michelangelo's David standing a few paces away. Be sure not to just walk by this beautiful fountain!

The Fountain of Neptune ( Italian : Fontana del Nettuno ) is a fountain in Piazza della Signoria in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence The statue is made of marble and bronze and is 560 centimeters high. The fountain was made from 1560 to 1575 by Bartolomeo Ammanati on the occasion of the marriage of Francesco I de' Medici to Archduchess Joanna of Austria in 1565. It was a competition that Ammanati won with its design. He took Montorsoli 's Fountain of Neptune, which he had made in 1575, as an example for his fountain . In the center is a copy of the marble statue of Neptune with the face of Cosimo I de' Medici . Around it are bronze statues of river gods, Satyrs and marble horses. The fountain is made in the Mannerism style . At the initiative of Leopold II of Belgium , a bronze adaptation was created in 1903 in Laeken by Giorgio Sangiorgi.

A beautifully crafted piece of Art. The fountain is located in the Signoria square. Florence is riddled with restaurants. Every nook, cranny and corner of Florence is swamped with eateries. This is why most hotels don’t offer an all inclusive package. There are ample opportunities to eat pasta, pizza and steaks. Signoria square is surrounded with just a handful of these eateries. Well worth visiting this Neptune fountain whilst strolling through the streets of Florence. 💫

Another respectable piece of art. The full impression is created when the fountain is working.

Another great sculpture. Florence is like a open air museum, one sculpture here one castle there, one church elsewhere. Just Wow.

Great fountain and sculptures! Apparently it was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici and sculpted by Bartolomeo Ammannati and Giambologna. For me, it adds to the character of this wonderful and historic city!

The sculpture was much smaller than I had expected. The fountains were off but the garden was nicely manicured. Great for an afternoon nap on the grounds if it were over 30°C with scattered shading. This garden though does provide a lovely view of the city from the other side of the river.

Monumental sculptures compete for the attention of the visitors of the Piazza della Signoria. There are plenty to admire, but none is as expressive as the statuary that adorns the Fountain of Neptune. I visited several times. The most memorable was a visit at night. The lights add a lot of drama to the exquisite details of the fountain.
