Functional Lifestyles fraudulently billed me for >$1000 while refusing repeated requests to stop. When I started at Functional Lifestyles I enjoyed their novel approach to working out through fitness. But when I tried to quit, their customer service turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. They would stop my billing temporarily and the re-start it without my consent. Then they would refuse to give me a refund for charges for dozens of classes which I never attended. Do not trust them with your payment information. Edit: The owner has responded, which compels me to respond with more detail: On Friday, August 28th, 2020, I asked their billing to "Please stop billing until I restart it." in an email telling them that I was leaving the state. In stead of stopping my billing, they put it on pause for 3 months, and then *automatically restarted it*. These charges continued for 3-4 months until I caught them charging me on March 2, 2021 and requested a refund, shocked. They refused the refund because they told me that I needed to tell them not to bill me repeatedly, months later, if I didn't want billing to be turned on again. This was in direct contradiction to my request, which was to *cancel* billing, not to pause billing, and is the basis of my complaint here. They told me that I needed to have messaged them 3 days prior to my bill date (after 3 months of not being billed and with no direct notification of the automatic unfreezing of my account) in order to not bee charged. They tell me that the contract I signed says no refunds and so there are no conditions under which I will get a refund. The response from the owner claims that I was under a 12 week commitment and so was not billed wrongfully. I moved away in week 10, requested they cancel ("Cancel billing until I turn it back on") in week 10, and discovered that billing had been restarted automatically from week ~22 to week ~38 without my knowledge or presence. If the owner had only charged me for the 12 week commitment I would not have complained - they charged me for *28* weeks and then refused to refund me. I felt betrayed, dismayed, and cheated, and then they fine-printed me on the the non-refund policy in the original 12 week contract. Stay safe. Use a privacy card to pay securely.

I have probably tried every gym in town and this is the first one that has stuck… for several years now! It just has that perfect balance of challenging you while keeping it fun. An hour seriously flies by there and it always includes some great jams, some laughs, some cheering, sweating and friendly competition. The format of 2 trainers for every small group works perfectly for me. It provides just the right amount of attention to make me feel safe and confident in trying new challenging exercises and it keeps me accountable (i.e. makes it hard to cheat 🙄). All the trainers are fab but my favs are Corey (the owner), Cisco & Evan. Don’t join if you want showers, spa, a pool etc. Do join if you want a place where everyone knows your name, keeps track of your progress and makes you feel like they give a damn. Oh and if you want to get stronger, leaner, faster, hotter 😉

This is legit hands down the best gym I have ever joined! I look forward to going to the gym now and they are the reason. From the moment I stepped foot in that garage I felt apart of this awesome fun family. Corey and the coaches are so down to earth and kind. I will say the dogs are honestly what lured me in! But coach Mike, Jesse, and Jillian are amazing. They always make sure you are doing everything correctly and especially making sure we don’t hurt ourselves. Being a travel nurse I unfortunately had to leave but I would definitely recommend this gym!!

I have been a member for a couple years. FL consistently produces great programming that challenges both beginner and advanced athletes. That being said, with old coaches leaving and new coaches joining, something about the vibe has changed. Often I found the coaches not as attentive and just chat with each other when I can see someone clearly performing an exercise wrong.

I'm in the best shape ever because of Functional Lifestyles! The coaches are all great and each has their own style and music. I always look forward to my workout and the staff is always friendly, even at 5am!

Functional Lifestyles is the best in the Bay Area! Coming here you are not just a member working out in a class but you become part of their family. From the first moment you walk in the door, you are always greeted like they have not seen you in years. Once the workout begins, the coaches are there to correct your form and make sure you are pushing yourself to the next level. Whether you are in class coached by Corey, Michael, Evan, Glenn, Jillian, and/or Zvia you always know you are going to get a killer workout. Plus as an added bonus there are doggies there that you can not help but love! You will be missing out if you don't join this place!!!

I have tried a lot of gyms and workout styles, but haven't found anything like Functional Lifestyles. This is the best gym I have ever been to. I tried group fitness but 20-30 people per coach in single room didn't leave much room for a complete workout. I tried cross-fit but the workouts were just too tough and I hurt myself. I tried personal training but it was just too expensive. But I gained the most from personal training. Functional Lifestyles is better than even personal training and much cheaper. Small groups with two coaches assigned per group is just the ideal thing for me. The workouts are complete and very well planned. All the coaches are very knowledgeable and they make sure even every small detail about your exercise form is taken care of. There is a fun atmosphere in the gym. In spite of the workouts being challenging, I feel motivated to come to the gym regularly. 6 months in this gym and I have already broken my PRs in bench press and deadlift which had plateaued for over a year. My cardio vascular conditioning has improved a lot. I strongly recommend this gym.

After joining, I have seen noticeable increase performance in skiiing, surfing, climbing, mt. biking, swimming, endurance, flexibility, and strength. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, ensuring form over everything. Having tried multiple group fitness studios, I put functional lifestyle at the top of my list.

Awesome group of coaches, very patient and willing to answer whatever questions you have when you get to the gym. Learned a lot, and made a lot of progress on my own goals!

Not the gym, but a we work work space. Less than 1 sq meter per work cube. Much less than adequite bathrooms. Literally a techno slave ship.

I joined this gym six weeks ago and love it! A great facility with a well-crafted program that offers nutrition guidance and challenging workouts in a small group setting. I can't speak highly enough of the trainers who are knowledgeable, supportive, and always looking out for your well-being. Class sizes are kept small so the trainers are able to give plenty of individualized attention. I wouldn't hesitate to try out this gym, no matter what fitness level you're at. Modifications are always provided and the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. I'm new to the area and was devastated to leave my old gym but I'm so happy I found Functional Lifestyles and grateful to Corey and his team for giving me a new fitness home!

An awesome group of coaches who encourage you and push you to perform your best. The moment you enter, you are welcomed like family. The workout sets are scientifically structured to produce results. 2 months in and I'm already feeling the positive effects. Love it here.

To become a member at functional lifestyles is the best self care decision I ever made. The coaches are amazing, not only are they super competent, they also make you feel welcome and included in the “family” from day 1. Been part of this awesome community since September 2018 and can wholeheartedly recommend functional lifestyles to anyone who want to have a functional body - no matter how fit you are or how challenging your goals are. The team at functional lifestyles will help your improve from any starting point. ???

A hidden gem (or gym) I am a cyclist, and I wanted to improve my long-neglected muscle groups. I never enjoyed going to classic gyms, and FL changed my mind. It's an efficient workout, in a spacious and airy environment, with well-trained and attentive coaches (Glenn, Francisco, ...) and amazing clients. I happily recommend anyone.

I joined recently after the county allowed in-person training again. I scheduled a consult and Michael chatted with me and made me feel comfortable and determined. I tried my first class, and the trainers and other students were very welcoming! It's always intimidating for me to start at a new gym, and I didn't need to worry. The trainers and other clients are very supportive and helpful. It's a wonderful community. Bianca is my monthly coach, and she is on it! She is very available for coaching and follow up. I love the small class sizes and trainer to client ratio. It's very affordable. Cannot recommend this team enough!

S/o all the coaches especially Corey, Mike, Glenn, Damian, Evan for the tips and just being real. The programming stays fresh and the improvements noticeable so long as you get to the sessions consistently. Highly recommended for people already on their fitness journey as the programming will have you moving functionally. I learned sooooo many lifts in my 4 months here its unreal, and as a nasm certified pt with a bachelors in kinesiology, i could not be more particular about who i trust with my workouts. Will 100% be back

I was in town for work 1 week, and these guys were able to accommodate my crazy fitness needs. They welcomed me to their family and treated me well. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Also, a big shout out to Mike, since he’s a really cool coach. Also, the staff is on great shape, which you don’t see everywhere (which seems important to me)!

I reluctantly joined FL two years ago after much nagging by my daughter who is a big FL fan and goes to the gym 7 days a week when she is home from college. Fast forward two years and I am a convert and fan of FL. I’m in my mid 50s and have been relatively healthy and have been more career focused as I took my health for granted. FL has been very good in educating me in the importance of being healthy - a good balance of strength, mobility and conditioning. When I first joined the gym I was stiff as a board, had ongoing joint pains and could see that age was starting to catch up much sooner than I expected. Now after two years (3 times a week) at the gym, I feel much stronger, my mobility and flexibility have increased 10 fold (I still have some ways to go), and the joint pains are a thing in the past. The coaches do care and the small class size feels like you have your own personal trainer without having to break the bank. All the coaches are well informed and they do make real-time accommodations for each of the individuals in the class. Coach Mike has literally been my personal physical therapist to help me work on my mobility. The monthly coach check-ins to review your goals, make adjustments to your workout plans (both in and out of the gym), address nutrition, etc. help in accountability and ensure progress. I do see myself being at the gym for years if not decades. FL has become an integral part of my week.

I'm someone who has struggled with my fitness goals for years and this is a place that actually has me showing up and working toward those goals. The coaches are very personal and try to form relationships with every member to try and understand your goals. When I was having trouble motivating myself to get the the gym, my coach called me and gave me both the support and the kick-in-the-butt that I needed to prioritize my fitness. They give advice on stress management, nutrition, mobility, and way more than just your workout goals. Classes are great and the coaches do a good job of differentiating the workouts based on ability levels. They also offer olympic lifting and a yoga-type class on Sundays which I'd highly recommend. They even let me come into the gym on days when I'm not in class to workout during open gym time. I'd say that in general these people really care about fitness as a lifestyle (hence the name) and want to help people live in more balanced ways.

What a great gym. I love that they have a 12 week starting commitment to help people like me build the gym going habit

  • 5/5 Kim de G. 4 years ago on Google
This gym is great and a fun place to be. The workouts are well planned and thought out and, importantly, focus on your general fitness and the quality of your movement rather than on quantity. The size of the classes is also just right: small enough to make you feel like you're getting enough attention, while big enough to make them fun. The coaches are also friendly, really know their stuff and are very patient with newcomers. Highly recommended.

I really love this place. Working out here is always a challenge, but having other people go through same exercises as you and also super knowledgeable coaches helps a lot. This place is all about community, being healthy and helping you reach your goals.

Corey & his team - Michael, Jesse, Jillian and Evan - have been life changing. That may seem hyperbolic, but it's true. I was an overweight sedentary woman in her 40s who'd never lifted. They met me where I was & I feel so much stronger and fitter. Now to be more regular in 2020.

Awesome vibe, super professional staff, always fun! No matter what your level you’ll work hard but safely and be cheered, supported and encouraged all the way through! Would highly recommend to anyone no matter whether you are a beginner and looking to take your training to the next level ❤️

I've moved around a lot and worked out at more gyms than I can remember (of all types: large inexpensive gyms, fancy gyms, CrossFit, small personal training studios, etc.), and Functional Lifestyles (FL) is by far the best experience I've ever had.  For starters, it's kind of inaccurate to call it a gym - it is much more than that.  Yes, you can work out / exercise at FL, but you can also learn about nutrition, general health and wellness, all while being part of a tight knit and welcoming community.  The coaches are all amazing - and it's great because they are a bit different from one another in their styles, personalities, points of emphasis (and even music tastes!). You always feel like you're learning something.  Most importantly, they are all extremely good trainers, and they make sure that you're continuing to move forward in the pursuit of your goals.  You'll never be bored by their frequently changing programs.  Corey and the rest of the FL crew have a little training gold mine in Palo Alto, and I recommend it to anyone (of any skill level or age) who wants to get healthier while being part of an amazing gym community.  Keep up the great work FL!

As a fitness novice, I love Functional Lifestyles! The coaches are well trained and help you with the right techniques. Aside from the regular classes, they follow up with you proactively on mobility and nutritional guidance.

I was lucky to find this gym when I first started my fitness journey. This place is more than a gym, it is a loving community, everyone here is supportive and caring. My body and strength tremendously improved after a month. Many loves!

FL is my happy fitness place. The coaches are knowledgable, attentive, patient, motivating and truly caring. Love the format of small group sessions, the strength and conditioning training cycles, the space, the equipment and the all around positive "we are in this together" vibe. I feel fortunate to be part of this community.

I took, what I considered, a gamble by signing up with Functional Lifestyles for their three month trial period. It was my first sustained gym experience and quite frankly they were the answer I was definitely needing! Anyone hesitating whether for financial, personal or procrastinating justifications - just stick with it for at least three months because they'll fix you right up. These trainers have the knowledge and discipline to help others with patience and accuracy. Its definitely worth it!

I have really enjoyed my new fitness family (FL). The group setting works perfect for me, because I am still receiving the 1:1 attention when I need guidance. The team also is very encouraging and helpful on how to move correctly. 10/10!

Small class sizes and a real variety of exercises. Cory and his staff are focused and practical. I particularly love how the trainers adapt in real-time to different people’s limitations.

"I never thought that I'll ever enjoy going to a gym but the FL experience turned me around; a perfect mix of personal and diy training. Also, the dogs are a bonus!"

  • 5/5 Tobias W. 4 years ago on Google
I've been at FL for 2 yrs. The reason I chose FL was that I was tired of paying for stuff I didn't use: Swimming pool, locker room, showers, sauna, smoothie bar. Instead, I can be rest assured my money is going directly towards improving my fitness. Things I no longer have to worry about: parking, programming workouts, using improper form/technique, diet planning, finding time to workout, or finding someone to push me. What's interesting is how well the coaches are able to tailor the workouts to any fitness levels - allowing me to push myself just as much as someone else.

Never been to a gym in years or worked with a trainer. Simply wanted to stay fit and get stronger (I'm in my 50s). And do it without injuries. Just finished my 3 months with FI. One of the best decisions that I've made. It has fit my needs perfectly: - Solid instruction - Nice camaraderie - Focus on "functional training" is exactly what I was looking for, without even knowing that term or what it meant until I met with Corey Recommend highly.

FL is great. My husband and I been working out with the team for over 18 months and we’ve never felt better. The community is awesome and the workouts kick your butt I’m the best way. I’d absolutely recommend!

The BEST small group training in the Bay Area (maybe CA?!)! Coaches who actually care, a program that allows you to actually work on all aspects of fitness (mobility, strength, nutrition). A gym that focuses on your well-being as a whole! I've tested out a lot of different programs and nothing quite compares. I feel a lot stronger and wiser when it comes to moving my body (and it's a proceess) since coming to FL. Again, would like to emphasize, a program that looks at everyone as a whole with coaches that go out of their way to ensure you stay healthy.

Exceptional coaching. A focus on doing it well and doing it right which leads to injury free RESULTS.

Although I recently joined, this gym is exactly what I needed. Nothing too fancy but has everything you might need to get the workout you want, from equipment to trainers. (including jammin music to get you motivated). You also have the option to either workout inside or out, a great way to enjoy the outdoors and still have a good workout. I recommend to anyone who is looking for a proper workout (tailored to your needs) in a laidback spot. 10/10 :)

The gym that has kept me in shape, joyfully, since June 2018! FL has not only impressed me with its very convenient location with tons of parking spots and good dining places around, it has been instrumental in giving me a sense of community. The coaches are terrific - in addition to being friendly they're extremely knowledgeable and are always ready to teach and support your goals. i have tried a bunch of standard gyms and boutique gyms via Class Pass and i stuck to nothing. And did i mention this gym is dog-friendly?! Highly recommend FL!

Want to get serious about your physical well being? Care more about consistency and longevity than immediate results? Want to feel better than you ever have? If so, then Functional Lifestyles is the place for you. I walked in over 6 months ago, hopeful and skeptical. What I've experienced since has exceeded any hopes or expectations I had. I'm stronger, more flexible, more energetic, and more enthused about fitness than I ever have been. I love the gym, the coaches, the program, and most importantly, the community. Consider me a fan! Sign up!

It's been almost 2 years since I joined the gym! All the staff and coaches, including Corey, Michael, Julian, and many others are very helpful! The classes are set up in a small group (max to 10 people w/ 2 coaches). The content is usually mixed of various activities (warm up, strength, conditioning). It is a very nice middle ground compared to private coach and large group setup. You will get enough directions and attentions from the coaches without paying $100+ per hour. For people like me who does not like to plan my workout schedule, this is definitely a perfect gym for me. I come here twice a week, and I have lost 9% body fat without changing much of my diet. If you are looking for a gym that has friendly staff, informative coaches, and leanback atmosphere, this is definitely the right place to come! They usually offer a free trial (2 free sessions, with the cost that Corey will chat with you for two hours if you don't stop him... lol). Highly recommend you come and try it out!

I joined 6 months ago and haven't looked back. The coaches are great, friendly and genuinely care about what's best for the members. They have even worked around several injuries to ensure i'm still getting the best of the workout
