🌼 ABOUT BABULNATH TEMPLE Whenever I visit Babulnath Temple it feels that you're not in Bombay, such is the calm and serenity here. Tucked safely on South Bombay hills, this 12th century temple has stood the test of times. 🌼 ARCHITECTURE OF BABULNATH TEMPLE The Babulnath Temple is a treat for the eyes of the architecture aficionados and history lovers. It is perched on a hillock in the heart of Bombay. To reach the temple you need to take the flight of 200-odd steps. If you don’t want to take the flight of steps, don’t fret. There is a lift service at a nominal charge of Rs 1. But may I recommend you climb up and down. It just enhances the whole experience. 🌼 HISTORY OF BABULNATH TEMPLE ➡️ On to more pragmatic facts, which are no less fantastical, the history of Babulnath temple goes somewhat as follows: The Shiva lingam, the main deity in the temple in the form of the Lord of the Babul tree, and idols of Ganesh, Hanuman, and Parvati were consecrated in the 12th Century by Raja Bhimdev, the ruler of the region. However, over time, the original edifice fell into disrepair. The idols were unearthed in the 18th Century leading to a temple rebuilt at the site in 1780 under the patronage of Hindu merchants and the Gujarati community despite much opposition from the Parsi community who owned the area then. ➡️ There is another side to the story, as it often is, namely, its legend: According to legend, the temple was surrounded by pasturelands in ancient times. Pandurang, a wealthy goldsmith and land owner, used the pastures for his cattle to graze on. The cattle were looked after by a cowherd named Babul. One fine day the goldsmith discovered that one of his cows, Kapila, was pouring out her milk at a particular spot as abhishek. When dug, the spot unearthed a Swayambhu underneath—a natural Shivling or Shiva lingam in black stone around which the current temple was then built. ➡️ The temple today: The present Babulnath temple dates back to a later version built in 1890 by the Gujarati community [once again] and Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad of Baroda state. Much of its fame is recent. In the initial days, the temple was used mainly by yogis partaking in bhang and ganja. Large numbers of the faithful come to this quaint quiet temple overlooking the city on Mondays, Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan. 🌸 Address | Charni Road, Near Chowpatty, Mumbai 🌸 Timings | 5:00 AM - 10:00 PM, The main worship is on Mondays 🌸 Entry Fee | Free 🌸 Photography | Not Allowed Inside the Temple 🌸 Parking | There’s no parking space is the area, better take a local transport or taxi 🌸 What Could Be Improved | ➡️ Although the temple management seems okay, still they can improve upon some infrastructure #SanchitaSairangKshatriya #omnamahshivay #mumbai #incredibleindia

Location – It is located in South Mumbai at 1.6 KM (10 minutes’ walk) from both Grant Road Station and Churni Road Station. It is 500 meters away from Girgaom Chowpatty. Temple - Babulnath Mandir is an ancient Shiva mandir in Mumbai, India. It is one of oldest temples in the city. Shiva in the form of the Lord of the Babul tree is the main deity in this temple. A bigger temple was built in 1890 by contributions from the Gujarati merchants and the likes of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad of Baroda state. The current temple structure can be dated back to 1890. The temple height was considerable when built in 1890 but a lightning strike in the 1960s and damage to the spire lowered the height of the present temple considerably. Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati temples are also in vicinity. Amenities – • Staircase to climb the temple. • Lift at Rs 1 per person • Golf carts for elderly and pregnant ladies up to elevator up the steep slope • Wheelchair facilities • Toilet and drinking water facilities • Limited parking facilities The temple is well maintained and very well managed. Spacious and very beautiful temple. Feel calmness and peace.

Located near Malabar Hill , this temple has around 100-150 steps and lift service is also available at the cost of Rs.1/person . Temple is so beautiful and so peaceful. You can sit and pray peacefully here except on the days of occasions when the temple is full of visitors and you won't even find place to stand . The temple is also well maintained and kept clean always.

I recently visited this temple, beautifully built temple and temple premises eventhough temple is surrounded by many homes, this temple has its own charm. Steps made of stones and many walls give an authentic ancient feeling. And the pure positive vibes of lord shive is what the instant feeling you get when you are in the temple premises.

A beautiful old temple of lord Shiva located in the heart of South Bombay. This temple has intricate carvings and a very pleasant feel. We love to climb the old stone steps leading to the temple instead of the new steps or the elevator. The steps (about 25-30) opens up into a huge entrance of the temple where you can see sadhus chanting prayers. The temple has divine Shivlinga looking at which you will forget all your worries.
