I
called
to
book
my
tour
the
same
morning
and
was
happy
that
they
were
able
to
accommodate
me
last
minute!
Aamir
was
my
guide
for
the
slum
and
laundry
tour
-
he
clearly
knew
where
he
was
going
and
what
he
was
doing,
and
although
I
could
tell
he
had
walked
the
same
route
many
times
before,
it
didn’t
feel
touristy
or
artificial
at
all.
It
just
felt
like
we
were
walking
through
a
neighborhood
he
knew
well,
where
more
or
less
everything
was
open
to
the
outside
world.
We
started
off
in
the
area
where
there
are
many
small
factories
for
clothing,
recycling,
and
bakery
products
-
at
every
little
business
we
encountered,
he
simply
had
to
ask
to
enter,
and
we
could
walk
right
in
and
see
the
process
up
close.
It
was
fascinating
to
me
-
I
never
would
have
imagined
that
the
bread
I
buy
in
a
supermarket
or
clothes
I
buy
in
a
normal
store
come
from
such
small-scale
operations
and
not
major,
industrial
manufacturing
plants.
We
also
passed
through
a
residential
area,
and
I
even
stopped
to
get
henna
done
from
a
woman
we
met
at
random
while
inside
her
neighbor’s
pottery
studio.
For
that
reason,
we
didn’t
have
a
lot
of
time
towards
the
end,
and
the
laundry
was
just
a
stopover
at
the
lookout
over
the
area
(where
I
was
mobbed
by
vendors
trying
to
sell
me
things;
an
expected
part
of
being
an
outsider
in
India),
but
overall
it
felt
like
a
very
authentic
look
into
the
everyday
lives
of
much
of
Mumbai’s
lower
class.
I
took
a
private
tour
so
I
wasn’t
in
a
big
group,
and
I’m
not
that
much
into
taking
photos
so
we
moved
very
fast
-
which
is
what
I
preferred
as
there
was
so
much
to
see.
Highly
recommended.
