One of the interesting attractions to see in the Grant Grove of Kings Canyon National Park is the Fallen Monarch. This is a fallen giant sequoia with a large hollowed out space that has been used over the centuries by Native Americans and early pioneers as a shelter, hotel and even a saloon during the late 19th century. You'll find the Fallen Monarch along the walking trail that makes way through the Grant Grove. You can walk through the open trunk of the ancient tree through its middle and out the opening 20 metres away. The Fallen Monarch is a unique experience and something well worth making a few minutes to enjoy when spending time in he Grant Grove area of the national park.

Amazing and interesting attention. The decay resistant redwood is a fun place to visit. I cannot image that it looks the same as twenty years ago.

While I researched the park prior to my visit I missed this stop and was pleasantly surprised. Quite a novelty that folks lived in this tree and there was even one business (saloon). I'm not sure why it is rated so low.

Huge, fallen tree that's tall enough inside to stand. On the same trail as the General Grant tree. Awesome area to explore!

Fallen, naturally hollowed out tree that has a diameter large enough to comfortably walk through for the entire length of the tree! Fun!!

So cool to be able to walk through the inside of a hollowed out fallen sequoia. What a fun and unique experience. Highly recommend checking this out on a trip to SEKI NPs.

Fallen Monarch is the name of the sequoia that has fallen and is now used as a narrow corridor that shortcuts the trails of the loop to the General Grand. It is a must see attraction since it will give you great photo opportunities and your kids will enjoy this short adventure.

Walk through a Sequoia! This fallen tree connects two sections of the path. You can walk through or duck out in the middle to be close to the base of a tree. Its neat to see and surprisingly roomy. It was a little icy while I was there.

Amazing! I enjoyed this part more than seeing General Grant if you can believe it! Because you can WALK THROUGH A TREE!!

The 125 ft high Fallen Monarch is a giant redwood log that was hollowed out by the fire before it fell more than 300 years ago. It is located on the General Grant Tree trail. Native Americans used it as shelter, and from 1868 to 1870. We walked inside the log and found a crack where baby bats were living. It was totally a different experience.
