Came here twice last weekend while staying in the area—overall had a good experience. Both times were walk-ins but there were available seats at the bar. Nice vibe at the bar! Food wise—would recommend the New York Strip and Salmon Collar, both well flavored. The Baby Iceberg was okay too—comes with a huge thick bacon strip! The bar looks fully stocked, with lots of good quality bourbons & whiskey. The Irish Coffee is a nice brunch cocktail.

We decided to celebrate Mother's Day at St. Anselm based on a positive brunch experience we'd had several years prior. We made a reservation for inside about a month in advance and showed up slightly before our timeslot. After checking in, the host led us outside to one of the furthest tables from the restaurant. We were a little confused, but the weather was fine, so we didn't want to make a fuss. After being seated, we waited. And waited. And waited some more. Finally, our server showed up and took our order. Then we commenced to wait another 20 minutes before he realized our appetizer biscuits still hadn't come out. In the meantime, someone approached our table to double-check our reservation, realizing that we were supposed to be seated inside. We were allowed to remain in our seats and our biscuits finally arrived. Our entrees arrived shortly after. I had the steak and eggs, and I was disappointed by the undercooked eggs and the rather tough cut of meat for the price paid. The cocktails were fine but not very well-balanced. I don't think we will be returning after the lackluster food we were served and repeatedly being forgotten by our server for extended periods of time.

Inconsistent. Sometimes the food and service are great, other times not so much. You never really know what you’re going to get. - Their steaks/beef are great cuts and great quality, however be sure to order a higher temperature than usual. For instance if you typically order medium rare, you should order medium and it will come out medium rare. Promise. - Great wine list. Sommelier very helpful, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. He definitely can increase your dining experience if you want to order a nice bottle. - Atmosphere always very nice! All the hostesses are helpful and happy and make the environment warm and friendly. I love their seating and restaurant setup - it’s very comfortable and fun. For instance you get the privacy of a comfy booth couch, but the fun atmosphere of many people around you enjoying themselves. - Service is sometimes good and sometimes not. Our last visit the waiter just seemed to be having a bad day. Kind of made us uncomfortable and feel bad that he seemed miserable. - All the desserts are amazing. Get the chocolate cake with any type of coffee drink. - Like the service, the food is sometimes hit or miss. One example would be the endive salad, sometimes it’s okay and sometimes it’s inedible due to being more than covered/soaked in what tastes like straight vinegar. - Overall it’s a nice place to come now and then, but I prefer to dine at businesses that are consistent where you know you’re always going to get good food and service.

Don’t skip desert! The deserts are all made in house. Our table ordered all of them and everyone was happy they did! The waitress mentioned they have some seasonal desserts coming soon and we will be back to try them. We had the lunch menu, which offers a smaller selection of entrees and steaks. Everything we tried was excellent! However, the buttermilk biscuits were a highlight of the whole meal.

Just had the most amazing steak dinner! It was practically melting in my mouth, and the sides were simple but perfect. The place was packed, so clearly it's a local favorite. The staff was super friendly and helpful too. Highly recommend checking it out!

A wonderful place for a special occasion. Outdoor patio dining added to the ambiance. Food, wine and service were all wonderful. Did an excellent job with gluten and dairy free. Server asked if cross contamination was an issue. I greatly appreciated that. We will be back!

The ambiance and the food both were absolutely great. They have a large wine collection (over 1k bottles) and a small food menu and this usually keeps the consistency of the quality. The lamb steak is a must-try item if you like lamb. Interesting facts about the pricing. While the prices of the food are pretty reasonable, the drinks are a bit on the high side. $ 20-28 per a glass of wine, including tax and tip. So you may want to factor that in your planning. Issues with payment methods: one cannot use an electoric debit payment or Apple pay. My table spent a long time trying to pay for the check. We had to get the manager to help us out, and it was not the best way to end the dining experience. Parking: There are plenty of parking spaces in the area, including a garage. The garage is free for 3 hours as of today (Oct. 2023), so feel free to bring your car. Happy dining!

Super cute place, spacious and fun! Had dinner here with some friends on a Friday night. We made reservations for 630pm and was seated inside at one of their booths. We started off with biscuits, cooked Oysters, deviled eggs, and giant prawn as our appetizers. The biscuits are a must order item. They’re fresh and warm, and comes with a side of polenta spread. Every bite melts in your mouth. The Oysters were good and had a nice flavor. You couldn’t “taste” the sea. Both the prawn and deviled eggs were pretty standard. A bit boring and standard in taste. I had the steak as my main course, along with a side of broccoli and baked potatoes. Steak was medium and full of flavor in every bite. The broccoli was just okay, and worked as a side going along with something that had more flavor. The baked potatoes are much like fries, seasoned with herbs. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but i still recommend making a reservation. They have some great large, private booth areas outside to accommodate guests during the pandemic. I sure hope they get to keep it all up for a while. Parking can be tough in the area on busy nights and weekends, but the Union Market parking lot should work. Service was fast and friendly.

Excellent place to get a steak. The steak is best in class, literally melts in your mouth. The sides are good too even if the options are not the most varied. You can see by the number of people there that it is an extremely popular place for a good reason. The staff is kind and helpful. All in all a superb dining experience. Definitely recommend.

I had been hearing about St. Anselm being the best steak in DC for months so finally went. I personally cannot imagine that this is the best DC has to offer. We went with the recommended Ax ribeye and it looked beautiful but it was chewy and fatty with minimal taste, were also ordered the mashed potatoes which were subpar at best, they tried being creative with it and overall a fail, their biscuits with pimento cheese were the star of the show. I definitely recommend ordering those. The waiter really hyped the ice cream cake dessert, so much so that we skipped van leewan next door to try it, we shouldn't have. It was the most basic thing ever with too much sauce. Overall, I think this place is overpriced and over hyped for what it is. Service was great though!

St. Anselm is a great spot in NE near Union Market. The buttermilk biscuits are heavenly and are a must try. Also, the iceberg salad is simple but comes with a T-H-I-C-K cut of bacon (pictured 🥓) They are known for their cuts of meat and I can’t wait to go back and try more. We had the NY Strip cut 🥩 for us to share along with potatoes 🥔 and broccoli 🥦- all delicious and are served on decorative presidential or state-themes plates.

Brunch! Okay, so I do maybe still enjoy a good brunch and St. Anselm makes it happen. Great (but also astoundingly loud) atmosphere and their staff is wonderful. Good, simple food and a decent beer selection. You're buying 9oz beers, FYI, but that just means you can have more of them! Definitely make a reservation and be prepared to yell at your brunchmates to converse.

As a southern native, I prefer softer biscuits, but everything else was stellar. Overpriced? Probably, but it was delish. I would absolutely return. I went again for lunch on Friday and the steak was definitely not as good. I asked for garlic butter, but I do not think that was what it was missing. Disappointed by that, but the sandwich was pretty much the same and we got to sit inside where the decor is nice.

Came here to celebrate my 40th birthday. This was my first time here. We parked on the street you will have to circle the block to find it. We sat inside our waiter Stephen was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. We ordered a bottle of champagne from New Zealand and it was delicious. For appetizers we ordered the biscuits with pimento cheese, the liver bread and the cob salad. It was delicious and the bacon just melted in my mouth. The salad does come with a lot of dressing so would suggest half the size. Everything was shareable sizes as well. For our main course we got the wagyu steak medium rare and a sirloin medium rare, potatoes and creamy spinach. The food was delicious. For desert we ordered the toasted marshmallow ice cream and the ginger snickerdoodle cookies. They ask brought it out with a candle and 3 mini cake pops. The cake pops were chocolate and very rich as well. Service was a 10/10 highly recommend to come the meat is also from a local farm in Maryland as well.

We received phenomenal service from Joe and enjoyed every single item. We started with the biscuits and pimento cheese and bacon. One must ALWAYS get the flaky, tender, succulent biscuits!!!!! Then we had a second starter with the salmon collar. This by far is one of the best value/ taste/ portion combos I've ever had. For an entree, we shared the axe handle, cooked to perfection and with the tastiest seasoning along with the brussel sprouts and pan fried mashed potatoes. And we finished with the ice cream cake and chocolate cake. We of course had leftovers and they kindly package all of your items exactly as asked and very thoughtfully. Everything was amazing from the service to the food to the ambiance. The restaurant has an almost speakeasy vibe. The service is extremely attentive and kind. I HIGHLY recommended this restaurant, it is all around wonderful!!

Just walking in I knew I was in for a dining experience like no other. The lighting and the atmosphere was absolutely breathtaking, the service was A1, the staff were friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu, AND THE FOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Everything we ordered was exploding with flavor! Definitely a place I plan on returning to and trying their other menu items.

Had wonderful dinner. We had buttermilk biscuits, oysters, salmon collar, butcher’s steak, lamb leg steak, carrots cake and ice-cream cake. The oyster and lamb leg steak were particularly good as the oysters were smoked and flavorful and the lamb was tender and the seasoning was just right so it went so well with our red wine. The atmosphere was excellent (can be a bit noisy but our semi private table was quiet enough to enjoy our conversation) and the server was honest, attentive, and nice. Certainly one of the best dinners and I totally recommend it.

Really enjoyed dinner here. Steak temperature was perfect and nicely seasoned. Cream spinach was a very nice compliment. The Somm was very nice and helpful. Finished with desert wine sampler. This is the place to go for a fine dining delicious meal that is not grossly overpriced. Worth the trip

My wife and I stopped by here with her best friend and celebrate her grand opening of her ice cream and coffee shop. The menu was not extensive but sufficiently suited. The food have good flavor and some originality. The portions were not large but I'm not a big eater. We were well serviced. Many outdoor seating options. Pricey beer prices but maybe that's the local prices.

I want to start off by saying the service was absolutely amazing ! I want to thank the Hostess’s Cat and Adrienn (hopefully i spelled it right, even thought I asked 100 times) who’s energy just made my day. They were the first people you see when you walk in and their positive energy made me want to wait the 20 mins. As for our server Chris, he was amazing ! He answered every question with detail and passion , his recommendations were a hit ! And i definitely would come back just for him. The food, the most important part, 10 out of 10 I recommend! We had the famous biscuits with the pimento cheese, the biscuits were so flakey and buttery, the cheese nice , smoky and a hint of spice, a perfect balance. The bacon was so tender and juicy that we could cut it with a butter knife ! I had never had bacon cut in that size before and I honestly have been missing out. The Butchers steak , was amazing, just melted in your mouth , the garlic butter wasn’t too over powering but just right. The pan fried mashed potatoes were new for me but they we’re delicious. Lastly the chicken , oh my goodness ! Had to have been my personal favorite , all of the flavors just popped in your mouth , the chicken alone was seasoned beautifully , but when you dip it in their green sauce (cilantro tasting) it gets better and better! Please RUN to go try this resturant , with great food, great service , and great decor <3 I will be back. (I forgot to take pictures as soon as it touched the table, the food was too good)

It’s been a while since we visited a steakhouse and we were so satisfied with our experience at St. Anselm. Our steaks were perfectly cooked and well worth the money, and the cocktails (we ordered Gold Rush and Irish Coffee) were so tasty. Welcoming staff, cute interior, great spot in DC.

This was my second time here and expectations from the first visit were definitely met. If you have a group of 3 or more, I’d suggest the dry aged tomahawk. It’s delicious and worth it. As for appetizers, go for the blue crab deviled eggs. I don’t even like deviled eggs generally, but these ones are phenomenal. Last thing I’ll note is the great service. We had Abi as a server for the evening. Her hospitality and constant checking up on us made her a great server. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

Had a solo dinner here, everything was amazing! From the service to the food, I really felt taken care of. The biscuits live up to the hype and the salmon collar literally melts in your mouth, no complaints!

Consistently great food. We love bringing friends from out of town because we always know the food will be outstanding! Everything on the menu is a home run… but we especially love: Ax Handle steak, salmon collar, the biscuits and pimento cheese, and pan fried potatoes. Reservations highly recommended- especially on weekends. They also have outdoor seating.

Delicious food in a relaxing yet lively atmosphere. Everything we had was perfectly prepared and highlighted the protein while pairing it with unique sauces. Excellent local beer selection.

The service and our server were excellent. However the food was just okay. Came here with high expectations after going to La diplomat. The ribeye was good but not great. We also tried the skate wing which was something we've never tried before. Unfortunately we could only taste the seasoning on the skate wing. So I couldn't really say how it's supposed to really taste like. The Bobo chicken was also just okay. Same goes for the New York strip. The best dishes there were probably the lamb steak and the biscuits. The sides were also quite good.

Incredible steak in a fun, relaxing atmosphere. Feels like a neighborhood bar where I wish I was a regular, yet packs the punch of a 5 star steakhouse in the menu and wine list. The grilled mushrooms are the best I've ever had, and I don't like mushrooms.

I took my nephew here for his post-prom brunch and we loved it. He had the Bodega breakfast sandwich and I had steak and eggs which had a perfectly cooked medium steak that came with a side of their deliciously crispy potatoes. Get the heritage bacon when you order becasue it's thick salty goodness is worth it!!!

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was such an excellent experience!! Our server Brian was so friendly and helpful. He did everything he could to make me feel special and I am so thankful! The food was insanely good and a great price for the quality you receive. We will be back and highly recommend.
