One magnificent construction. You feel you are wrapped up by history here. A holy place that holds up the prayers of millions of people. This building looks great both by day and by night. Very nicely preserved and serves its purpose to so many. An iconic spot and a landmark of Istanbul. A combination of what cannot be combined.

This is a must-see if you like religion, history, museums, art, or visiting the major sites in each city. The wait is long and most of it is not shaded. Be aware of the call to prayer times, when the mosque closes. I would recommend an audio tour or a good tour book, because you'll miss lots of details of how the space has changed over time. Dress: Everyone: Knees and shoulders must be covered. I recommend pants, it's just easier. Everyone: Shoes you can get on and off quickly and easily. I recommend a bag or sack to carry them in. Women: Hair must be completely covered before entering. They sell head coverings if you don't bring one, but they are very strict about this.

My second time in Istanbul to visit this beautiful place and it never disappoints! So much history in a single structure! The restoration in conversion from church to mosque is stunning! Admission is free, but lineups are very long since the pandemic! Be sure to respect the sanctity of the place, and follow directions when security tells you to cover your head and body (for women who are uncovered during the hot summer months).

A heavenly experience in a mosque, which is long standing and reaches out to people's prayers and emotions. Some visit as a tourist and get amazed by the architecture, natural stone work, lighting, pillars, art and mosaic on the walls. It's a must visit in Istanbul visit.

Having been here 11 years ago as a museum and back again as a mosque, and as a non-Muslim foreign tourist, I strongly prefer its current incarnation. When it was a museum, it charged a ticket and the line at the ticket office was almost an hour long. Now it's free and there is hardly a line (no need to line up for ticket). Other than periodic renovations and the introduction of carpets, from regular sightseeing perspective nothing really changed. I really appreciate Hagia Sophia for accommodating both to Muslims (many of whom want to worship in this sacred place) as well as enhancing non-Muslim tourist experience.

Free entrance. Beautiful, magnificent mosque. I went on Monday at about 9.30 am, there was no queue at all. But when I left about 30 minutes later, the queue became so long. Even on rainy weather, visitors are willing to queue to enter this historical mosque.

Hagia Sophia is a majestic symbol of history and architectural splendor in Istanbul. Its monumental appearance is awe-inspiring with its colossal domes and exquisite stone work, testifying to the centuries-old history of this iconic site. The noble atmosphere and grandeur of the building capture the imagination, arousing the admiration of every visitor. This historical monument, which has changed its functions from a temple to a mosque and a museum, carries a wealth of cultural heritage. The view of Hagia Sophia, especially against the backdrop of sunset or night illumination, leaves an unforgettable impression and immerses you in the atmosphere of the grandeur of the historical heritage of Istanbul

Ayasofya mosque has the spirit of Islam. It's the most special art between all Istanbul mosques. The architecture and interior is definitely well thought. It guests hundreds of people around the world everyday. Inside many tourist guides give services for tourist groups in many languages. It's about history, religious history, importance and many topics and themes about this impressive mosque. Happy to gained this place to Islam again.

When entering this place, I felt an unnatural prestige. My skin shivered from the reverence that exists in this place. Glory be to God. I do not know what to say. I do not know what I feel. People come in a thousand daily to visit this mosque. The Byzantine, which was renovated in the Ottoman era, makes you feel something that can never be described. I can only say that it should be visited now. Everyone can visit it for free, after the entrance was a material fee estimated at about 15 dollars.

This is a very unique place with tons of history. You can read about it before or have an audio guide, but if you want to hire someone who can tell you everything about this place, make sure that it is not going to be a big group of people. We have seen some groups of 40-50 people and it's too much for that place. To get in you don't need a ticket, the line is to go through security and there is no fast pass. The best way to come in in the morning (9 a.m.) and do not go on Friday, because it's closed for tourists until 3.30 pm.

One of a kind. The Hagia Sophia is simply amazing. I highly recommend getting a guide to take you through Hagia Sophia because there is so much history to explain - not just about the Hagia Sophia, but buildings that stood before. One of those global spots everyone should see before they die (in conjunction with the Blue Mosque).

Standing tall in all its resplendence, this monument has an aura that outlives humanity. Now since this has been turned into a mosque since last year people could be seen offering their prayers. While visiting the place please make sure you are appropriately dressed.

Absolutely stunning and must-go if you’re in Istanbul. Entrance was free (i went on a Friday, not sure about other days). I quickly saw the inside of the mosque then visited the tombs in the other buildings, and it took me 30 minutes. You can then see the Blue Mosque and explore the area. It’s very historical, lively, and just overall lovely.

It's really amazing to see something do monumental that withstood the test of time for 1500 years. It's a shame that beautiful marble floors are now covered with carpet since this, once greatest church in the world, was yet again converted to the mosque. Take note to avoid prayer time to enter and you will need to take your shoes off so it would be good to carry plastic feet covers.

Words cannot describe the feeling this place gives me. When you take your first step inside you instantly hit by the sheer weight of history of this monumental structure. You have to go there to see if for yourself. It is unbelievably beautiful and a very humbling experience.

Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum at the Turkish Republic, Hagia Sophia has always been the precious of its time..The mystical city Istanbul hosted many civilizations since centuries, of which Byzantium and Ottoman Empires were both the most famous ones. The city today carries the characteristics of these two different cultures and surely Hagia Sophia is a perfect synthesis where one can observe both Ottoman and Byzantium effects under one great dome.

A bucket list experience that exceeded my expectations. Hagia Sophia is a working mosque and truly is a special place for people of the Muslim faith. I am not Muslim but experienced genuine awe upon entering. Words and pictures can try to describe the beauty, architecture, detail, and sheer size of the building but it really must be experienced in real life. I am humbled and amazed at the majesty of this site. Admission is free. Women must wear a headscarf or other cover. If you do not have one they are for sale right by the entry doors. Men and women must be modestly dressed. You know what that means so you will not be able to negotiate the point at the door. if you are wearing a skirt that would raise eyebrows when bent over for Muslim prayer you will be denied entry. Shorts are not allowed. The Mosque may be closed for periods during the day for prayers / religious services. There is an entry hall where shoes must be removed, then you enter the main hall (where I stood like a tourist trying to take it all in). The Hagia Sophia is a must-see!

Breathtaking place. We went there during a prayer session and we were hesitant that we'd be disturbing the folks. But, everyone was friendly and recognised us that we visitors wouldn't be disturbing them. Some even offered to click pictures of us mid-prayer which was surprising but well appreciated. The history of the mosque was also astonishing and the way the place has been maintained over the years is simply amazing. I wish I had visited this place during the day. I'd have loved to see the exteriors better too.

Hagia Sophia is one of the most important Mosques in İstanbul. This is the second time that my husband and I visit this magnificent place! This mosque has a historic and religious significance. Once was the largest eastern Roman Church. Later was a museum, and since a Turkish top court on July of 2020 reversed the 1934 Cabinet decree which turned Hagia Sophia Mosque into a museum, it has become again in a Mosque. The size of this mosque is enormous and it's interior is so beautiful! As a tourist is important to know that it is necessary to take off the shoes. Women must cover their hair. They must cover also their legs. Therefore, it is recommended to wear a long skirt or pants. Shoes must be removed before entering. During pray hours, tourists must leave the prayer area. I really recommend to visit this magnificent mosque!! It is extraordinary!

Be prepared that it is a mosque now. So there are some restrictions on wardrobe. Plus take some socks with you. You have to be without the shoes inside. At the morning opening you can expect long lines, but no worry, they move very fast. There are also security controls, but nothing strict. Your dress, mainly lack of it can be a bigger issue. The arts are stunning. You may find some free brochures inside with the history of the church and the change to the mosque. But I strongly recommend finding some history on Wikipedia etc. Local materials are strongly leaning toward Islam and the Osman/Turkish narrative. The top floors are not accessible due to the restorations. And based on the statement of a staff member: "We don't know when it will be finished, it could be months, it could be years. No one knows." :-)

Stunning, serene and soothing... if you arrive in the morning before the crowds - otherwise just stunning! An incredible building with an equally impressive history. Unfortunately large parts of the building are undergoing renovation at the moment (summer 2021) so the upper floor is closed, but there is plenty to see anyway, from the mosaics to giant marble jugs with fascinating stories behind each and every detail. If you don't use a tour guide (there will be some outside touting for business), make sure to read up before going in, or at least have a written guide ready to follow.

Hagia Sophia is a great example of Byzantine art and architecture as it started life as a church. Then it became a mosque for 500 years and multitude of Islamic features were added. Considering such a rich history, it was only logical to turn Hagia Sophia into a museum in 1934. But wait, in 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque with the consequential restrictions especially for women, which could be considered outrageous in modern world.

Tremendous historical sight. It's a pity Turkish authorities decided to turn it back to mosque, because it still doesn't look or feel like a true mosque, though many of mosaics are now covered and women are not allowed to the main part. Still 100% worth visiting and strictly guarded by the state, which is good

I felt kinda sad when I heard the news that they converted it to mosque but I think it should've been left in a previous neutral state as a museum. Neither mosque nor church just something that can be equally sacred for everyone. Given its history, I can understand its value and significance but I don't think that its status is something that should be played around with every other century to see if it looks better as a church, museum or a mosque. Istanbul is such a beautiful, fantastic and historic city that I adore. It has no shortage of tourist attractions and especially mosques that are on every street corner so why add another one???

inside is massive, calm, peaceful. it's not entirely beautiful inside as it was a museum and wasn't maintained perfectly i think like the other mosques I saw. Also the presence of so many crowd control barriers spoils the effect a bit. go around 9pm and it will be nearly empty, no ticket, queue or guide required. make sure to be outside for the evening call to prayer from here and the blue mosque opposite like a question and answer - it's magical.

Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, another great mosque as a major cultural and historical site in Istanbul, Turkey. It used to be a church, then served as mosque before became a museum and now it became a mosque until today. It's listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Similar to blue mosque, try to go early in the morning to avoid crowd, as the crowd can be huge towards noon and evening. Nice building design, just opposite and walking distance from blue mosque. Worth the visit.

This is one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever been in (partly because I'm a big history nerd, plus I particularly enjoy religious buildings). The architecture and interior itself is incredibly impressive, with the high ceiling, the dome and low-hanging chandeliers. However, what made the deepest impression on me was the atmosphere. The carpet invited people to sit directly on the floor, making it a very social, almost communal space, like an indoor park. The acoustics made it a lively, but not a noisy space. Don't miss this wonderful experience when in Istanbul. Oh and entry is free 😊

Absolutely beautiful!!! We spent at least one half here. For visiting, you need to take care of dress code. I wore long dress and a top to cover the shoulders. And also a scarf to cover the hair. If you don't hace those, you can also borrow it from the entrance. There are also free guides who are working there, and offer free introduction from time to time. We had one guide, she is very friendly ans spoke good English. It definitely worth a visit!

I had the pleasure of visiting Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul, and it was an experience I will never forget. This architectural marvel is truly awe-inspiring, and the sheer size and scale of the building is breathtaking. The history of Hagia Sophia is fascinating, and the architecture is a perfect blend of Byzantine and Islamic styles. The intricate details, intricate mosaics, and beautiful calligraphy add to the grandeur of the building, and it's impossible not to be impressed by the incredible craftsmanship that went into creating this masterpiece. One of the highlights of my visit was climbing to the upper gallery and taking in the stunning panoramic views of Istanbul. The peaceful atmosphere of the mosque made it a perfect place to reflect and appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. I highly recommend visiting Hagia Sophia Mosque to anyone visiting Istanbul. It's truly a one-of-a-kind attraction that shouldn't be missed. The mosque is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of humanity, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to witness it in person.

Absolutely beautiful to see with your own eyes and feel the history of the place. Majestic. Wearing a mask helps because it really smells like feet in there unfortunately! I would recommend going with a guide. We didn't have one and would have liked to learn a bit more about the place. The first floor is no longer open so it was very crowded with everyone on the ground floor.

A place full of history and religion. I found in this place, special religious paintings, unique mosaics, calligraphy at an unprecedented level, unparalleled architecture, grandiose sculptures, but most of all I was impressed as people from all over the world and of different religions prayed for health and happiness. That says a lot about this place. That is the normal thing for mankind. So we can coexist in harmony with everything around us, if we want.

The Hagia Sophia is a must-see for any visitor to Istanbul. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Byzantine and Ottoman monuments in the world. Sophia is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. It was built in the 6th century and is famous for its massive dome, which was the largest in the world for nearly 1,000 years.

If one visits Turkey its one of its must see places. Its an amazing structure, once oround it or in it it still gives you the feeling that time is at a standstill, it gives you a feeling of living the moment when it was created. The Architectural design is superb and the painting on the wall and roof along with the marble carvings will astonish you. Originally called the Hagia Sophia it was a church then was made into a Mosque then declared as a museum and reopened as a Mosque 🕌. What ever they would like to convert it into its a piece of art from the past you must look at for sure 👍

The meaning of enormous! Unfortunately tiling depicting Mary and Jesus was covered since it has converted to a mosque now and some parts were forbidden for visitors. It's a very beautiful and welcoming place. There are a lot of different local Turkish dishes to try, especially around the entrance. The compound is beautiful with interesting architecture and the mosque itself is a sight to behold. Before entering the mosque, women are required to wear a head scarf. If you didn't come with one, there's a shop that sells some scarfs where you can easily purchase one. Before entering the mosque itself, all visitors are mandated to remove their shoes and there are shoe racks available in which you can keep the shoes. The intricate design of the inside of the mosque is mesmerising.

Inside you can only go to the main hall and nowhere else. So, while the main hall is nice, overall this was kinda disappointing. You only need about 15 minutes to see the main hall and take photos. It's better to get pictures from the outside. Entrance is free, but shorts are not allowed for men and women need to cover their hair and knees. They sell an "overall" women can use for 20 lira. Try to avoid going during prayer times. For great photos of the exterior, go to the seven hills terrace restaurant nearby, ideally close to sunset.

I can only recommend it to everyone to visit this historical masterpiece. I have never admired such an impressive building. You can feel the history and get goose bumps. You have to see it once. Women must wear a headscarf. Men must wear long pants. Shoes must be removed. Admission is free.

Personally my favourite historical site in Istanbul. Architecture, meaning of the site and mixture of cultures are just stunning to see and feel. It's a must see. Quite busy during the day, but in the evenings not that much, so choose evening for a relaxing visit. Take a scarf with you and dress appropriately, as this is a mosque and praying takes place inside.

This is a beautiful and must-visit place in Istanbul. Please have enough time in hand to go around this place. First of all, there is a queue to enter this place and it is mandatory to cover heads for ladies. The place has a history to it and the architecture is amazing, with big chandeliers, doors, and paintings on the wall. If possible please visit this place with a tour guide to understand its history of this place better. You are allowed to click pictures inside the place. You can enjoy sweet corn and bread when you are in line.

My visit to the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul was a breathtaking exploration of architectural brilliance and historical significance. This iconic landmark stood as a testament to the city's rich and diverse history, offering a profound experience that left me in awe. Stepping into the Hagia Sophia Mosque was like entering a realm where time itself had woven layers of stories into its walls. The sheer grandeur of the interior was spellbinding—towering domes, intricate mosaics, and an atmosphere that resonated with both reverence and awe. The grandeur of the architectural design was matched only by the profound historical narrative that the Hagia Sophia carried. Initially built as a cathedral in 537 AD, it later served as a mosque before becoming a museum and then being reconverted into a mosque. This complex history was palpable in every corner, creating a unique blend of religious and cultural heritage. The mosaics that adorned the interior were nothing short of breathtaking. The intricate designs, rich colors, and meticulous craftsmanship showcased the artistic prowess of eras long past. Each mosaic seemed to tell a story, with a depth that evoked a sense of wonder at the human capacity to create such beauty. The moment of reflection inside the Hagia Sophia Mosque was an experience of profound serenity. The acoustics of the space carried the hushed tones of prayers and whispers, underscoring the spiritual significance that this place held for countless generations. The recent conversion back to a mosque added another layer of significance to the visit. It was a privilege to witness this transition, which was a reflection of Istanbul's ever-evolving identity while honoring its historical roots. In conclusion, the Hagia Sophia Mosque is a must-visit destination that stands as a living testament to Istanbul's rich history and cultural heritage. It's a journey through time, a place where architectural brilliance and spiritual reverence converge. The Hagia Sophia Mosque is more than just a landmark; it's a living, breathing legacy that resonates with the spirit of Istanbul itself.

During my travels through the lands of the Ottoman Empire, in the lavish city of Istanbul, I was struck by the grandeur of the Hagia Sophia. This divine abode, now transformed into a mosque, opens its gates to travelers for a modest donation of a hundred gold pieces. And while many might deem it excessive, my soul gratefully cherished the opportunity to immerse in the ambiance of this sacred place. Where ancient walls retain the echo of centuries of prayers, I felt an invisible yet palpable energy, wishing to linger longer. Enchanted by this city, I would dare say that Istanbul pulses with life more vibrantly than even the great Moscow.

That's a place with an interesting history. It was first a church and then it turned into a mosque but, as you can see, the images on the walls have been renovated. Revealing the images is a hard and precise work. It's a huge building with some surprises. Like the cat you can see on the photos I share but maybe that's not a surprise considering the fact there are a lot of cats in Istanbul. On the last photo you can see a small hole. The legend says that if you can turn you thumb without any interruptions and without changing the position of your hand, it will bring you good luck. Good luck with trying that! ;)

I love the atmosphere day and night. Families gathered together making picnic, playing, laughing, buses going everywhere and trams as well. You have cash points and the tourist police 24/7. You can snack on some sweetcorn (5TL) or chestnuts (10TL to 30 TL) which are delicious. As you sit down to watch your environment, people selling water(1TL), tea or coffee will offer everyone for 3TL. One evening as I was sitting on a bench drinking tea, I was approached by a 25 year old man, he started to talk very respectfully so I didn't mind a conversation until he started to flirt. Perfect if that is what you are looking for. I have seen some Turkish guys pretending to be Spanish which I am, to a Korean tourist trying to take him for drinks. It was a bit strange and I would be careful. If you have any problems, talk to the police, present all over the square. Amazing restaurants offering homemade Turkish food for around 32TL (food, drink and bread). The restaurant is called Can. Other similar ones along the tram line.

Sultanahmet Square 🥰 A great place in the city center 👏😍 A big reference to meet people and enjoy the views. It’s really close to Santa Sophia’s Basilisk and the Blue Mosque 🕌 It’s also close to the Obelisk of Theodosius and Marmara University. You can have a walk and take a cup of tea ☕️ There are plenty of options to have a break during your visit. =)

It used to be an awesome place to visit until they made it a functional mosque. Now you cannot visit the second floor with ancient frescos. They covered the orthodox painting with covers. So you cannot investigate and see its history anymore. I would say it became a regular (still very good but regular) mosque instead of a history monument

A great place but always crowded, well maintained with few restaurants around. The security and the tickets clerk need to work on their customer service skills, unfortunately they do not know how to entertain a customer. Sometimes you’d get the idea that you’re being scolded by them just for asking a question.

Very interesting place. You have opportunity to buy cover for your hair/legs rather than borrowing it for free like in blue mosque. Views are nice and it's huuge. It's not museum anymore but an actual mosque which is a pity if you ask me. You can't access first floor anymore.

It is now a mosque, so you need to take off your shoes and its all carpeted (was not like that before) It was very very busy inside, you had to put your mask on but there was NO social distancing. keep that in mind when visiting.

It is no longer a museum but now a practicing mosque. It is still open to the public outside of the times of prayer. It is quite impressive and this history behind it is remarkable. They have some of the icons on the wall covered by cloth since it is a mosque.

Originally an Orthodox Church, turned into a mosque and then a museum. The monument is impressing. I am not sure I understand why this turned into a mosque again from a museum , as there is a mosque around the corner. What I did not like is that fact that you can't see mosaics (they are covered) that are pieces of art. It makes the atmosphere less appealing and in my opinion it should a remain a museum. Ps.1. You can't go upstairs. PS. 2. Women need to wear a scarf and dress moderate and in the main area you need to take off your shoes. PS. 3. Art and history should be preserved 🙏

I recently visited the Hagia Sophia Mosque and I would like to share my experience through this review. Hagia Sophia Mosque is a magnificent historical landmark located in Istanbul, Turkey. It holds immense cultural and religious significance. First and foremost, I must mention the stunning architecture of the mosque. The grandeur of the dome, the intricate detailing, and the blend of Byzantine and Ottoman influences create a captivating atmosphere. The interior is adorned with beautiful mosaics and calligraphy, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal. The historical significance of Hagia Sophia Mosque cannot be overstated. It has served as a church and a mosque throughout its long history, representing the convergence of different cultures and faiths. Walking through its halls, one can’t help but feel a deep sense of reverence and appreciation for the centuries of history that have unfolded within its walls. The location of the mosque is also ideal, situated in the heart of Istanbul’s historic district. It is easily accessible and surrounded by other noteworthy attractions, such as the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, making it a must-visit for tourists and history enthusiasts. Furthermore, the staff at Hagia Sophia Mosque were welcoming and informative. They provided valuable insights into the history and significance of the mosque, enriching the overall experience. Overall, visiting the Hagia Sophia Mosque was a truly awe-inspiring experience. Its architectural beauty, historical importance, and central location make it an essential destination for anyone visiting Istanbul. I highly recommend exploring this remarkable site to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Ancient church that became a mosque after the fall of Constantinople centuries ago. A short walk from the equally impressive Blue Mosque . Fantastic inside and out. Free admission. Women must cover hair and shoulders. Shorts not allowed for men for men or women. Wait time averages about 35-40 minutes in the touristy seasons, but is worth it. Have fun!

Very little to say. It's THE monument of Istanbul. You just can't miss it. History and cultures permeates its walls. It's worth it just for the golden Byzantine mosaics. We got a private guide (highly recommend) and were able to understand and appreciate Hagia Sophia even more. We went early in the morning, right at opening time. Didn't have to queue at all.

Hagia Sophia's rich history resonates within its walls, echoing the bygone era of Byzantine glory. Once a grand Byzantine church and the cradle of Western civilization turned to a mosque. This alone should be forever etched upon history as an act of cultural desecration. However the rich history surrounding the place mixed with Turkey's timeless civilizational impact adds layers to its cultural tapestry. A captivating experience that transcends time, leaving visitors awe-inspired. A must-visit for those seeking to witness the convergence of two worlds. ⛪️🕌

Over a thousand years old and it being still intact and a functioning mosque with so much history behind it is just beautiful. Only downside is in the morning the lines are insanely long taking into account how many people come here yearly, so just go at 7-8pm it is a lot calmer with no waiting lines and it’s free to enter!

To be able to experience an iconic historic landmark such as this is a Privelage. The queue is long but patience is rewarded. On entering there is a kiosk in the grounds selling appropriate clothing to enter the mosque at reasonable prices. The shear scale of the building is only appreciated once you enter the mosque 🕌 Maintenance of the structure is incredible considering the age and size not forgetting the number of daily visitors. There are plenty of cupboards to store ones shoes and ample space to walk around, take photos and reflect on one spiritual path in life

Quite simply, there is nowhere quite like Hagia Sophia. You can feel the history of the place - it is positively sacral. Spend an hour or so just sat inside and witness the worshipping life of the place and soak it all up. Queues are shorter or even non existent at the start and end of the day. Avoid midday or early afternoon if you can.

This masterpiece of culture and history has a few surprise in stock for the curious travellers. As tourist don‘t wash their feet, but must remove their shoes ( because it is not just a monument but an active mosque) and because tourists walk miles on miles. the first impression anyone gets is the smell of sweaty feet! Everybody is walking on a thick green carpet, which probably doesn‘t help. The place is crowded but not too much the queues are very long but they go fast. The monument is still definitely worth a visit, but in comparison to other sacred sitrs of similar magnitude, like the Vatican or Delf it fails to trigger the deep contemplative feeling that it should. The place is still a must see of course. Though it is in part more reminiscent of a karaté ring than a 1500 year old spiritual center.

This is a bucket list must do especially for a History buff like me. The magnificent structure was built in the 6th century (when the city was Constantinople) by the eastern Roman empire as a church. Since then it has been a mosque, a museum and currently serves again as a functioning mosque. (So dress conservatively when visiting, and take off your shoes before entering). Hagia Sofia has withstood the test of time, vadals, earthquakes, and different peoples and still stand strong today in all it's beauty and elegance carrying with it untold stories through history. The inside is absolutely beautiful to visit, and still has some of the old gold mosaics. To get in, the lines are long but i was with a tour guide who could get me in quickly. The architecture (combined with the history) makes it a spell binding and moving experience.

Absolutely overwhelming! FREE OF CHARGE. If you do some reserach before visiting you will really understand why Ayasofya is famous and the heart of Istambul and how in 1453 was converted to a mosque by the emperor. I felt so good by entering the mosque I can't express in words my feelings & it is very clean and safe place to go as everybody has to be checked by the police (ladies by lady police) before entering the area (it has 4, 5 entrances) the police is everywhere outside the mosque no matter which entrance you enter from. For the safety of everyone and keep the historical premises safe 😊 and everywhere in Ayasofya. There is so much staff to watch the safety of visitors and guide them. Even I saw "Fatih Beledyesi" staff giving free water containers outside the gate of Ayasofya to the public. For this thing I really appreciate turkish authorities! When I visited in August 2020 it was being partially restored from inside and the areas were closed to visitors. However, I could figure out by looking at the mosque that they really looked after for around 600 years that's why we still can visit. It is open to everyone no matter what religion you have you will not be turned out.

Really impressive on the outside as well as the inside. Go to the right as you approach it and go around to see the buttresses built by Sinan. The positive of it being a mosque is that we were able to enter it 3 times in 2 days whenever we were in the area. The downside is that we can't see the frescos above the apse or access the 2nd floor. I've heard they open the curtains when not during prayer times but we visited at 7pm, 8:40am and 4:30pm (not during the 5 daily prayers) and the curtains were still drawn over the frescos.

I have visited hagia sophia as a museum and a mosque and what i liked is that the entrance is now free. The carpet color i did not like but you should watch out to take your shoes off before you go in and to be wearing something decent. The frescos above are not open yet but i was told the above floor will be open shortly.

From an architectural and artistic perspective, the structure functions better as the basilica it was intended to be rather than as a mosque. From a religious standpoint, however, once a building is consecrated as a mosque it must always remain a mosque, so I can appreciate how the Turkish government's hands are tied in this regard.

Sultanahmet square is one of my favorite places to be at in Istanbul. Have a seat at one of the many benches and enjoy the beauty of the Hagia Sophia on the one side and the blue mosque on the other side. When you enter from the tram to the square, there is a security control by the police where you need to show your bag and possibly be searched yourself. But there is no security check when coming from other sides such as Topkapi.

(Translated by Google) “Hagia Sophia” is a majestic Turkish religious edifice, praised by the country's Muslim and Christian residents alike. After being the largest cathedral for Orthodox Christians for nine hundred years, it became one of the greatest mosques for Muslims for nearly five centuries, then it became an art museum since 1934 with a political decision. It is considered by UNESCO as a historical monument belonging to the world cultural wealth.

Today, it is a square called Sultan Ahmed Square and is located in the Turkish city of Istanbul. The square was organized as if it were a park, but now it has acquired a view indicating its history. There are shops in which artists display their art and which are erected especially during the blessed month of Ramadan in the square opposite the Turkish Islamic Museum with small domes to give it an Ottoman look. In 2011, 17 million Turkish liras were allocated for its restoration. Really beautiful mosque. Must go early in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds. Ladies need to cover their hair, as usual in all mosques. Staff very tolerant of people taking pictures. A "must see" when visiting the area. there is so much history and architecture it is almost overwhelming.

  • 4/5 Aleksandar R. 2 years ago on Google
One must visit Hagia Sophia in his lifetime. This place is crucial for the world's history and a true architectural wonder. You can spend hours just admiring this wonder. The entrance is free, but be aware that you cannot enter with short trousers. Also, it's not recommeneable to visit it during the prayer. However, I find it extremely sad that it was turned into a mosque and can't understand why the icons of Jesus and Holy Mary are veiled - this is utter madness and shameful!

  • 5/5 Bryan B. 2 years ago on Google
This location has long history, and has changed its purpose through out the years. The most recent incarnation as a mosque allows the access cost to the public to be free, but limits the access to the bottom floor. The second stroy was accessible when it was a museum, the museum also had more self guided elements. The Mosque itself has nothing about the history, and their are no self guided options. There are many guides outside who make their living doing tours. Be sure to negotiate, we were quoted $100 lira per person, which we felt was a little steep.

What should i say This place is a Must if you visit Istanbul! Almost 1500 years many different religions and as much people who visit every day haha. I really recommend that you visit this place around 7-8pm than you will have almost no tourist around you.

  • 5/5 Mohamed S. 2 years ago on Google
Everything about this masjid is sensational, the vibes you get and the feeling is unmatched! Through the ages it was more than a place of worship, it resembles awesomeness in every corner. It's was a church, then museums, then a masjid. Didn't like though how people still treat it like a museum (where its a place of worship)

Beautiful ancient mosque. A must to visit while in Istanbul. There is a long line but it moves fast. Be prepared to get the shoes off to enter.

  • 5/5 Nicolas N. 2 years ago on Google
Just beautiful. Rich history, not very big. If you are a woman, you will not be able to be in a big part of it. You have to leave your shoes to enter, you can put them outside or carry them in your hands. If you carry them inside, you will not be able to carry them inside the praying area. So you can leave them with woman outside.

I feel so lucky to have visited this place multiple times. No words can describe how magical and beautiful this place is. The walk in front this historical building in the early morning is a quite unique experience. If you go to the east side (near the Topkapi Palace main entrance) during the sunrise you will be able to a magnificent view. It seems they open in for prayer on Sunday for the dawn prayer or Al Fajr.

Nothing much to say about the Hagia Sophia. The entrance is free. You have to cover your head with a piece of cloth. For dudes, if it is summer time, you have to wear long sleeves etc. The architecture is amazing, the paintings are amazing, it is just perfect.

Very nice mosque and probably by favorite from the looks in Istanbul. A lot of foot traffic here for the mosque and museum but definitely worth checking out. You do have to take your shoes off to see the inside but as you can see it’s awesome inside. Great architecture and maintained well.

Converted into a mosque. Enterance is free Now. Please be sure your clothes is suitable for a religion areas. The floors are carpeted. There are safe boxes outside for shoes. Saint Sophia or Ayasofya. One of the best preserved landmarks in the world. It worths visiting definitely. Just note for ladies that nowadays it is functioning as a mosque, so be prepared to cover your hair and legs if wearing shorts or skirt. You are required to take your shoes off as well. It is allowed to visit during the day and night. The height and size of the dome, colors of the marbles on the walls, the mosaics and other beauties are breathtaking.

  • 5/5 Helena W. 1 year ago on Google
What a spiritual experience, despite all the visitors and noise. The visitation time is restricted to when there is no prayers taking place. Women must have their heads covered and everyone must remove their shoes. Not allowed to go past a certain cordoned off point with shoes even in your hands. Also not allowed to enter upper floors, which were previously allowed. Also a pity that the whole marbled floor is now covered with a carpet. But it is STILL beautiful and a honor to have been inside with the memories of 1000's of people who have been there before me over the centuries. I was in awe of its magnitude

  • 5/5 K H. 1 year ago on Google
I visited this Hagia Sophia before the government changed it into the mosque. It was the symbol of the old Roman Empire as well as the Osman Empire. Personally I cannot understand the decision this time. Anyway from the decision, the admission is free now. This beautiful and significant historical site deserves to see regardless the religion.

My wife and I came to Istanbul and this was one of our favourite parts of the trip. The beautiful Hagia Sophia. Its breathtaking as well as the history or story of its conception. Must see and go. The line up maybe was 30 minutes. Way Worth it!

  • 5/5 Azeem S. 8 months ago on Google
Hagia Sophia was an absolutely mind blowing experience! We were so lucky to have a great guide who took the time to explain the history and origin of the building in such a clear and engaging way. We learned so much about the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world, and it really brought the building to life for us. The architecture of Hagia Sophia is simply stunning. The dome is so vast and awe inspiring, and the mosaics are absolutely beautiful. We could have spent hours just wandering around and taking it all in. If you're ever in Istanbul, I highly recommend visiting Hagia Sophia. It's truly one of the most amazing buildings in the world.

Magnificent Mosque! I visited with my family and as soon as you enter, you get a deep sense of piece and calm in your heart. The echoing voice of Imam and the khutba we heard was most beautiful. The high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers with walls that lasted centuries was truly gorgeous. A must visit if you are in Turkey.

Historical and magical must see attraction. I'd suggest combining with Blue Mosque. Expect long lines to get inside. The decoration is amazing and you leave feeling refreshed and reflective. It gets very busy so be prepared.

  • 5/5 Natalia E. 4 months ago on Google
Beautiful mosque, definitely worth visiting, in my opinion blue mosque is more interesting from inside, but this one is definitely carrying more historical value and you can feel the thousand year history while working around inside. Entrance is free, but you have to queue to get in, don’t forget the scarf for women to cover the head and enjoy!

Beautiful mosque that allows visitors throughout the day. One of only a few that allows non Muslims to go inside. You must take off your shoes and obviously respect the signage and requests from the employees. Saw lots of people who maybe can’t read or maybe didn’t care going into places that were clearly marked off for them or for the general public.

  • 3/5 David E. 2 months ago on Google New
It is very very busy and unless you line up since the early wee hours, it would be at least an hour of very long winding queues to get in. They let 2000 people in every 45-60minutes. If you are lucky it is only one hour wait even though the line seems long. Wonderful to see the inside of the church that was the largest in the world for a thousand years!

Unfortunately no longer a museum, currently used as a mosque. Tourists are only allowed to visit the upper level, where you can see from top to bottom, for an overpriced €25. The famous paintings can also be seen partially covered, but for the price it's all a disappointment. Other mosques that are free are more interesting and you don't have to spend so much money. It is not necessary to make the queue during the day. We were there at 6pm and went straight in without queuing.
