Ever been on your travels and want to find a place where it feels like you have your Mama cooking for you? Mettha's is the place to go to. The prices are affordable, super fresh, and large portions. Its a family business, and they are such kind hearted people. They took in a street cat, who is the most adorable, loving little creature, so you will have amazing company at the restaurant, even if you go alone. Mettha's husband even helped us with his tuktuk when we needed to grab some stuff, and didn't charge us at all. They are genguinly lovely people. We were also craving a seafood platter, and she said she could prepare it for the next night to our liking. Unfortunately we had some personal issues happen and we had to leave suddenly, so never got to enjoy our next dinner at Metha's Home Cooking. This restaurant was our favourite thing in Unawatuna, and the one thing we regret not being able to go back to enjoy. Amazing food created by amazing people.

Wonderful place - small, authentic, so friendly and one of only three Sri Lankan restaurants to be listed in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021. Mettha makes delicious homecooked curry and rice with organic spices ground by hand. Loved it!

I was there for lunch. They offer a small menu but the dishes are very delicious and authentic Sri Lankan. I took the 4 vegetables curry with rice and a pineapple juice. Furthermore the price is cheap and the staff friendly.

Superb curries (the best we had in Sri Lanka - try the 4 vegetables!) and super friendly owners. I would highly recommend to go there for authentic and reasonably priced food.

The owner is the sweetest elderly lady and she completely saved our day. She made us some amazing veggie rice and curry and let us take it in her Tupper ware to the beach (the next day we also ate at her place and it was perfect as well). She is just so sweet and did everything to make us happy.

This food is special, I can feel her soul into it. How she cooked this food with love. I can't remember when is the last time I felt this way. You can tell how long she has been cooking, the taste is well balanced, not too spicy, no stones in the rice, no MSG. She uses traditional ingredients even the curd and honey. She used real kithul, I can tell it's difference from the once we had because I used to buy kithul in the grocery and it taste strong, it's thick and you know it has sugar in it. But I dont know how to differentiate. I'm glad she told me how to do it. She use only the quality ingredients that's why her food is special. I dont usually give 5 star right away. But this food calms me down when I was in distress earlier. It changes my mood right away. These days most people look at the visual side of the food, but this one, it is simple but brilliantly tasty! Now I know why her restaurant is considered one of the top 50 Asia's best restaurant. You have to try her food! You will love it!

Mettha's place is very simple and not connected to the beach. You could say, she has the focus on tasty local curry food. It was delicious, I really can recommend her restaurant.

Visited - March 2022 I am so glad we came to this place, as we just loved how friendly and hospitable Auntie Mettha was. She made us feel very welcome. I love this place because of its simplicity and warmth. We ordered the Prawn Curry & Rice with Vegetable Curry. The service was quick, and we really enjoyed the food! In case you wish to come in the evening, she uses LED Rechargeable light bulbs, so the place is always lit. She also has beer and doesn’t charge service charges! You must visit if you are in the area and want to experience home-cooked food.

Pricey but authentic and delicious food. Very friendly persons, happy to explain the food and provide alternatives. The dhall was just the best, with a strong burnt garlic flavor. The banana flower curry was very unique, never had that before and it tasted superb, kind of like a meat with the texture. We ordered mango and pineapple juices, and liked the pineapple one better. The calamari curry was in a light coconut milk curry, very tasty. The only thing negative was the pricing, Rs 600 for a small portion of white rice and 4 small vegetable servings seemed like a tourist rip off. But the perfect taste made up for it I guess!

We loved the vegetable Rice and Curry. Very nice and friendly people and really homecooked. Highly recommended for those looking for traditional food in an authentic atmosphere.

Charming home style restaurant. Cute chef/owner. We had a lovely meal - 4 veg and rice, and a freshly made papaya/passion fruit juice. Good value for money in this touristy part of unawatuna. For the veg*ns out there: she makes curry+rice every other day (approx). On the alternate day she makes fresh kottu. Note I haven't verified that the food is vegan. Please ask when you get here.

Very delicious, we can recommend the Restaurant. If you want a traditional Sri Lanka Home Cooked meals, than you are right here. The prices are also very good and not so expensive like the other restaurants on the beach.

Don't expect unrealistic or hip atmosphere here but do expect to get the most amazing taste. Local Sri Lanka food made by an amazing local lady. Limited menu options but the taste is simply amazing. We tried two kinds of chicken curry and rice - semi and extra spicy. Both very different and so good. Loved it. Don't miss. And it's cheap.

If you are looking for some “mamas cooking” in the town, this is the one! The food is local, and truly delicious. The lady is very kind, makes the food herself, and accompanies the whole experience with a beautiful genuine smile. It is a must go! 10/10

Best kottu I had in Sri Lanka! It is home made rotti and not the frozen ones from the shop they use to make kottu. You can see and taste the difference right away!! Best kottu!!

A small, family run place with fantastic food and service. The Kottu was delicious and made with home made roti. Mettha was really lovely and eager to make up for running out of rice and curry by inviting us for lunch the next day. An authentic experience in Unawatuna which feels otherwise quite touristy.

Delicious home-cooked food! My boyfriend and I ate the best Kottu of our three weeks in Sri Lanka. We also asked for an additional side dish of fried garlic shrimp, and they were perfect. Excellent value for money (roughly 900 rupees for one Kottu dish). We will be back!

Food was great, we had kottu - but also because the offer was very little, rice and curry wasn't available. Portion was okayish, could be more. We were the only guests.

Hands down the best food we had in SL. We even had seconds on the same night. Lovely lady cooking out of her home, don't let the lack of decoration put you off. The curries and kotthu are amazing.
