We wanted to have lunch before going on the river safari. So we decided to have our lunch at Captain's Boat House restaurant, It's called Gangabada Asiriya. Food was amazing, I was really impressed. The prices are acceptable, the presentation is super cute and the taste is really good. And also, That environment is also great.

Good place to go for a ⛵ boat ride in Madu Ganga. There are about 64 islands and it would take about 4 hours to complete the ⛵ ride. You can choose 1 hr package or 2 hr package. Standard condition in boats ⛵ . Lot of interesting things to see and observe.

This restaurant is on the left side of the road leading to the Japanese Stupa. At night it will look very striking with bright lights and looks beautiful from a distance. The menu choices are many and varied, from western to Asian. Food prices adjust to tourist area prices. With a medium portion and the taste of the food is right on the tongue, it makes the stomach sufficiently full. The service is fast and friendly. There is also a free place to eat while chatting with friends or family. What needs to be improved or needs to be fixed, especially during the rainy season, is the rainwater leak that enters the eating area.

We’ve had an absolutely disappointing time on the river with them. We’ve used our last tiny bit of money for this boat ride and that was just a terrible decision I could cry. We called and asked what time would be good to see crocodiles and animals, they replied that “now is good” and that while they can’t guarantee anything, they sounded excited and were saying that they will do their best. However, once in the boat, that was a whole different story. Everything was so staged and nothing was natural and spontaneous. The driver seems to have a strict timeline to respect and a list like “here, the driver take photos of clients, then stop right here to see that specific bird etc”. He didn’t speak or explain anything (my husband is Sri Lankan so that’s not even a language barrier). We went to Cinnamon Island (that was great), and that’s it. Driver proposed to show us the Temple and we told him that we would rather spend this time looking for wildlife like mentioned on the call, he said he will look but in the end we realized we were in fact just going back to the port! We’ve spend not even 40 minutes on the water... :( I would have rather seen the Temple if I knew this man was just going back full speed go the port... We were hoping to find someone to express our disappointment to, but no staff was there when we came back from the boat trip. In short: NOT for animals and nature lovers. This is a BIG company which operates boat tours like a factory. There is plenty of better rivers and lagoon tours, Rathmaga lagoon, close to Hikkaduwa, is one of those places! Much more beautiful, peaceful and respectful on traditional unmotorized boats.

Best place to do Madu ganga boat safari. Its also calked captain's boat house. Captain is well experienced person & he is a proffesional guy. They have near 30 boats. You can take lunch in his restaurant also. He has a floting restaurant you can get good experience eating in floating restaurant. Foods are tasty and all of foods are fresh and they preoare local foods. He has best day outing place at oter side you can book it and have a private party or something.. It has 100% privacy you can organize your next day outing with here. Captain always dress like captain in a ship. You can have a fish therapy at captain's place and you can use swimming pool when you buy day outing package.. You can bath in a sea when your at day outing... It's really worth for you... I can gurantee best experience with Gangabada Asiriya..

Susanthi and her family are absolutely lovely! Sea Waves is a must try if you want to experience the best local Sri Lankan curry you ever had. We did the cooking class there which consisted of going to the local fish and vegetable market to pick our food, then we came back to Sea Waves and Susanthi taught us how to cook the most delicious food, definitely a worthwhile experience. We keep returning to this restaurant during our month long stay in this part of Sri Lanka because the food and staff are simply amazing. Food is very reasonably priced - we are backpackers so generally eat local food as much as we can. They have reopened after the New Year so make sure you pay them a visit!

Want a fantastic place to visit. Exceptional value, beautiful family run restaurant. 8 weeks in Sri Lanka and we continue to be impressed with the quality of food and service. We’ve been so impressed by the countries food and service but this place has taken it to another level. A must visit even if not in unawatuna…. Worth a drive if out the area. We don’t normally return to same place twice but will be revisiting tomorrow. 1 million out of 10’ Mixed devilled and prawn curry wow wow wow

Such an awesome experience! Not just for cooking, but also for learning more about the culture and the locals. Susanthi knows well what she‘s doing and she loves to share her knowledge. You go to the market, pick the stuff you want to cook, you preapre and cook and you eat. You‘ll eat a lot. Our hearts and bellies are full, we can only recommend!

Dear Susanthi, thank you so much for the perfect cooking class and your warm and polite way of teaching us the best currys in Sri Lanka. Keep your business up and all the best for you and your family. We can really recommend the restaurant and the cooking class. Everything is fresh from the market or even a lot of herbs and spices grow in her own garden. You won't regret any food you get at this place! See you soon. Martin & Doro

SO GOOD! Me and my partner did the cooking class today and we absolutely loved it!!! First, we went to the market, where all the fish and vegetables were explained to us. Sushanti is a very kind, lovely lady, who was happy to explain everything in great english. We loved her outdoor kitchen, and especially the fact, that she grows and produces all the spices she uses herself in her own garden (which you can also purchase for a very fair price with a day notice). We made a Dhal, 4 different vegetable currys and a curry with tuna, as well as a fried eggplant salat (my favourite). She gave us plenty opportunities to take pictures to remember the spieces used for each dish. And the food we ended up cooking was extremely tasty. One of our favourite activities in sri lanka so far!!! <3 Thank you for this morning

Amazing cooking class in Unawatuna. From selecting the freshest produce at the fruit & vegetable and fish markets through to step by step preparation, this is a fantastic hands on cooking class. You are involved in every step along the way and get to taste as you go to understand the flavours. Susanthi is a wonderful cook and teacher and ensures that you are making food that you want to try. Hands down the best cooking class I have taken. Highly recommend.

Had an absolutely amazing experience when I did the cooking class here. We got to see the local markets and how they worked. If you visit Sri Lanka I would recommend visiting here even if it is out of your way, well worth it even to just eat at the restaurant. Food is second to none

Awesome cooking class with Susanthi! It was very nice going on fish market & vegetable market to choose what to cook. Susanthi is adorable and will explain you everything on rice & curry + it is so delicious. She also does her own spicies. Highly recommended ! :-)

We ate dinner here and loved the food so much, we decided to take the cooking class! Susanthi was an excellent cooking teacher and the meal we made together was the best meal of my life. The dal curry is truly the most delicious dal I’ve ever had in my life! Thank you!!

The cooking class have been a very nice and enriching experience. You learn how to cook easily minimum 6 different fantastic local dishes which are chosen by the group (up to ~8 people). The tasting of all dishes was extremely good and she cooked the best Dhal Curry we have ever eaten here in Sri Lanka. The class started with going to Galle market in order to buy the ingredients for the dishes. Nice and familiar atmosphere while cooking, loveley people and a good cooking teacher! Absolutely recommended!

We enjoyed a great cooking class today. Included a visit to the vegetable and fish market in Galle to pick the ingredients. The owner gave very clear instructions and in the end everything tasted excellent (eg banana leaf curry, ocra curry, dhal). So definitely a nice thing to do.

(Translated by Google) They took curries and juices. They asked about drinks several times. I ordered a curry with shrimp (said quite clearly), they bring me a curry with vegetables as a result. I say that I ordered another, you mixed up. They tried to convince me. It looked very strange and stupid, why it was so hard to admit that they had not heard or mixed up. As a result, they changed, of course, they brought curry with shrimp. But this was already clearly not so kind and welcoming. Curry was delicious but overall standard. They didn’t go to them anymore.

One of the best food experiences we've had during our Sri Lanka south coast trip. Sea Waves is family restaurant and, believe me, this family have some secret recipes! Their curry is delicious and not very spicy (but they can do it your way if you like it to be insanely hot), definitely the best curry I've tried in past years. They're also good in cooking fish and seafood (ask their calimari or daily catch). Owners are friendly and always treat their guests as family members. Just go there and enjoy!

  • 5/5 Mona M. 4 years ago on Google
Possibly the best meal of our trip. The rice and curry was spectacular. You get a small taste of most their local dishes. We also tried the prawn and rice. You will find the dhaal curry tastes slightly different that usual - it’s better! We loved it so much so the owner gave us all her recipes after we ate. Service was great with super friendly owners. Highly recommend and will be back!

Thank you to Susanti and her daughter for a great morning of visiting the vegetable & fish markets, and then cooking up an absolute feast. I would say it's worth going alone to see how the famous and delicious Sri Lankan daal is made with the two stages of coconut milk. The aubergine salad was a real highlight, as well as okra, sweet potato and freshly fried poppadums. Susanti is a very interesting person and this is a great way to meet the local community & learn about life in this area.

Communication via Facebook Messenger was quick and convenient. The class started off with a trip to the fish market and vegetable market where I was able to choose which vegetables I wanted to make curry with. The outdoor class setting was peaceful and beautiful. The spices and herbs we used were all homegrown in her fresh garden. The cooking instructions were informative and easy to follow. Needless to say, the food was plentiful and delicious. Highly recommend!

I don't recommend this place because of my bad experience with the owner. He is not honest as he told us (a group of nine people) that we would see crocodiles and different birds for sure. But actually we didn't see anything but a few monkeys and crows. After the safary I tried to talk to the manager but he was so disrespectful that he didn't even look at me and didn't respond. So do this only if you like rafting itself. Otherwise it's completely waste of money and time.

Only Rs. 3500 for 10 people boat. While your ride you can see island, buddhist temple & you can buy cinnamon products. The best thing is fish therapy and you can enjoy it. This was the best dhal that I have eaten in Sri Lanka! We have visited Sea Waves twice - once for a dinner and it was so good that we have decided to attend the cooking class the very next day and it was a perfect choice. During the class we have visited the local market and chosen all ingredients ourselves. It was also a great chance to get to know local spices and vegetables. The cooking itself was very interesting and clear to follow. After all we have eaten everything what we have prepared during the class and we loved it!

Myself and my partner visited the Sea Waves Restaurant this evening. Beautiful traditional family run restaurant with lovely friendly staff, whose passion for what they do is clear to see. The food is authentic and incredibly tasty, the best we’ve had in Sri Lanka so far! For the quality and amount we ate the price was extremely reasonable. We’ll be back soon to try the Kottu and have more banana fritters! Highly recommend you don’t miss out on this wonderful place!

Decided to get dinner there and ordered two soups: seafood and pumpkin with coconut cream. And curry with seafood. Seafood soup was ok (but not so rich of sea food🥲), but pumpkin soup with coconut cream is too strange for our taste. Curry was really great, but as usual as in other places. Monkeys near the restaurant add some jungle atmosphere and it's really great 🙈 Waiters and cookers are really lovely people 😊

Did a cooking class here during my travels in Sri Lanka. I am excited to incorporate all the new dishes and techniques I learned here back home! It was so much fun and I learned a lot. And very delicious too. Some participants were keen to try some more special curries like squid curry. This was no problem, and after they bought the squids (their cost), we even made a squid curry. Just wanted to say; Sea waves is very flexible and open to requests!

This was the best dhal that I have eaten in Sri Lanka! Before the class we have visited the market to buy all ingredients. After all we have eaten everything what we have prepared during the class and we loved it! Great cooking in the best atmosphere! You can’t miss it!!!

We had dinner here and the food was delicious. The restaurant is up stairs from the road. We could see two sections of the restaurant one open sky and another covered with a ceiling fan. we had the grilled prawns and devilled calamari. It was spicy, but I just wanted to eat more.

Fantastic place to enjoy traditional Sri Lankan food. Everything tastes so special! And there are vegan options, just ask the staff - we had amazing rice&curry and special roti. Restaurant owner lady and staff is very friendly and welcoming. I had cooking master class as well and it was excellent experience. I highly recommend to try this place and enjoy amazing food that they serve. And if you have time - go to cooking master class as well. You definitely won’t regret this. Thank you very much for everything !

A 5 min walk out of town, but totally worth it. This nice family restaurant gets daily fresh seafood from the market. Very good tasty dishes. The prawns comes with a secret delicious sauce. Try the moijto with fresh passion fruit. Would totally recommend!

What an amazing and unforgettable experience! A highlight of my time in Sri Lanka. Susanti first took me to the vegetable and fish markets to get the ingredients. It was cool to see where she sources ingredients for her cooking, and you can see where the locals shop! We then went back to her restaurant to cook. She explains step by step and you can tell how passionate she is! I felt like part of the family. The food was also delicious (I had at least 3 courses)! Susanti’s daal recipe is unreal. Cannot say enough positive things - a must do in Sri Lanka!!

For the second time, I visited Sea Waves Restaurant & this time with my Australian family. Susanthi the charming Sri Lankan lady with the beautiful smile greeted & warmly welcomed us to her new spacious restaurant. Firstly, as usual she took us to the local market to purchase vegetables, meat & sea food as per our wish. After coming back, she started the cooking lesson with the help of her beautiful young daughter. Each & every step we followed & enjoyed with great enthusiasm. Curries cooked in clay pots with mouth watering authentic flavours. Finally as a family we all enjoyed tasting the best ever Sri Lankan Rice & Curry in the island. For the second time I'm highly recommending Susanthi at Sea Waves Restaurant for great food & cooking lessons who's looking forward to experience the best in Unawatuna.

AMAZING local breakfast, try the rice with fruits and honey! Perfect hideaway from the busy touristy city. Very nice people, super cozy place with a fabulous jungle view. Here you can also join cooking classes for Sri Lankan dishes. Thanks for hosting us and watching the football match Germany-Spain with us! ;P

Beautiful space, delicious Sri Lankan food and the most wonderful family who runs the restaurant. We had the rice and curry (comes with a few different types of curried vegetables) and the prawn curry dishes and both were very tasty. Highly recommend!

We went there for a cooking class with Susanthi and we cooked fish curry this was amazing! Dish anti and her family are really kind people and the food was delicious. We could decide how spicy we want our curry and she explained very well all the steps of the cooking. We will come back for sure to eat again at the restaurant. Don’t miss it!

I did the cooking class and it was helpful to understand Sri Lanka's cuisine and to learn how to prepare it because I'm totally in love with! Susanthi is kind, patient and thoughtful. I definitely recommend you the experience if you want to get the tricks and add its in your own cook!

We had an amazing morning learning to cook fabulous local curry. It started with a trip to the local market to choose vegetables . Susanthi was an amazing host, the food was delicious and I cant wait to try it back home x

Curry was tasty and dense unlike in some other places where it was watery. One of the best I've tried during 2 weeks. Calamari were slightly overcooked so a bit rubber. I'd suggest the owner to serve more rice because it was not enough and even curry left over. My girlfriend ordered fried rice with seafood. She liked it and the portion was big enough. Her papaya juice was good, sweet and not watery. Service - OK, prices - average. All in all, a nice place and recomended.

If you are in or near Galle this is a must do experience. We had such an enjoyable few hours. We made delicious food, we learnt about the cuisine, we had a guided tour of the market and just laughed non stop. It's such a fun thing to do to give you context about what you will be eating throughout your trip round Sri Lanka. It's also incredibly good value. We left full, more knowledge and incredibly happy. Strongly recommend.

We were looking for a restaurant that cooked authentic Sri Lankan food and we definitely found it. This was our favourite spot in Unawatuna for dinner. The seafood was cooked to perfection (grilled prawns) and the vegetable curry and prawn curry were extremely tasty!! It’s a family owned restaurant and really attentive and friendly service. The restaurant is situated next to the jungle and it’s a beautiful open space overlooking the lush greenery. If there’s one restaurant you visit whilst here- this is it.

This family run restaurant is a great place to experience local cuisine in a very friendly atmosphere. During our 9-day stay we ate there three times - everything was delicious and homemade, including sauces and spice mixes. We also booked a cooking class with Susanthi, the owner, which included a visit to vegetable and fish market and a spice shop. Even though I’m a skilled cook myself and a devoted foodie, there was something to surprise me in a positive way! We cooked a variety of curries with clear explanations and later enjoyed a self-made meal. Definitely worth a visit!

I had a wonderful dinner here in Sea Waves. My tuna steak was absolutely delicious as well as traditional rice and curry which we’ve tried here. Staff is friendly and smiling:) it feels how much they care about their guests and reputation. My dish was ready after 10 or even less minutes after the order what surprised me a lot! I would definitely recommend this place!

Best rice and curry I've had in Sri Lanka, hot battered prawns unreal, the mixed devilled dish is amazing (nice and spicy, not too sweet like I've found in other places). All made fresh after being ordered. Very welcoming staff, warm family vibe and such a nice experience to speak with the family and be in their environment. Fully recommend.

You should start your trip around Sri Lanka from this place, so you would have your food standards set! This was the best food I had on the whole island, the Chef was very knowledgeable and the cooking classes taught me seriously a lot! I can’t recommend it enough ❤️

Excellent food, and service. Attention to detail in everything. It is family run and quality and consistency is what they really value as they're reluctant to hire from outside! The food didn't disappoint. We had the devilled chicken which was lovely and the rice and 4 curry dish. They are proud of their dishes and so they should be. We had a lovely time. The setting is really nice too with good furniture and an airy spaced out dining room.

We stayed at the restaurants Airbnb, had food here a couple of times and did the cooking class. The food is the best in Sri Lanka, the prices are a bit higher than other places but the quality reflects that. The cooking class was great, we made 5 curries and a salad and everything was delicious, finally the recipes were shared with us for usage at home. The family running the place is super friendly and hospitable, overall highly recommended!

I had an incredible experience at this cooking class hosted by someone truly amazing! They went above and beyond to help me organize a surprise birthday celebration for my girlfriend. The attention to detail was exceptional, from arranging a delightful cake and cheerful balloons to curating an unforgettable cooking class. The host's friendliness and professionalism made the entire event even more enjoyable. We had an absolute blast and created fantastic memories. Highly recommended!
