The best curry in my life was here, the taste was amazing, same as flavour. I have never tried such curry before where I would clearly see spices - pieces of cinnamon, carnation etc - they give awesome smell! I had curry with seafood and even dared to try medium spicy one. Well, if you like spicy food you will definitely enjoy it!

Great kitchen! I took tuna which is very fresh. I even saw it delivered. I came 3 time to eat tuna. The cook asked me also how I would like my tuna. This is professional way of cooking, but you get it not everywhere. So it’s really good stuff 👍 Thanks guys for your meal and friendly welkom 🙏❤️

An amazing place to taste delicious traditional Sri Lankan food at it's very best. The owners are really friendly and welcoming. A great place to enjoy seriously tasty curries! You can even sign up for a cooking class and learn about the spices used and how to create your own mouth watering dishes. If you are near Unawatuna this is an absolute must! Without a doubt some of the best food we tasted during our trip to Sri Lanka. Highly recommended!

After 3 weeks of rice and curry in Sri lanka we found this place and were enlighted about what rice and curry actually means: fresh veggies and fruit, creaminess and richness in flavors. It was the only time in Sri lanka we actually tasted cinnamon, cloves, cardamom in the curry even though those are the main spices in sri lanka! Wasantha (who knows how to cook over 100 different curries and will happily teach you about them in her cooking class) has the greatest gift mixing the spices - every curry is unique. Thanks to her, rice and curry is now part of our regular cooking routine. Don’t miss out on the cooking class. At first sight it seems a bit pricer, but you have to take into consideration that prices for vegetables have risen because of massive food shortages right now. The day we spent there cooking and chatting with the family (3 Generations!) was wonderful. They are such kind people and made us feel so welcome, almost like a home away from home. They send us all the recipes, so we can cook at home. Worth every penny! What you should know before coming here: since they are offering cooking classes every day they are only offering dinner right now. Best is to text them on whatsapp before coming, because it makes sure you get a table & it is easier for them to plan (right now gas can’t be bought anywhere, therefore they might run out of it at some point which would leave you hungry - but if they know you’re coming, they arrange an open fireplace to fulfill your Curry wishes) Don’t miss out on this place, it is a true gem! Worst part of leaving Sri Lanka is not being able to return to Wasantha for Dinner. We can’t wait to be back! PS: try the cheesecake for dessert, we loved it.

The best cooking experience in town, start at 10am, transport in tuktuk for step 1. choose your own ingredients at the vegetable market and get all the explanation and taste what you want, experience and learn. Next stop is the fish market, be amazed, next stop cooking station. Lovely explanation, we were 6 and 4 already did a cooking class but this is next level. Ask all your questions, participate, taste, learn and mostly enjoy. Have a beer and enjoy the background information, what a story. Then after 4h of cooking, the moment to enjoy your food, plenty and delicious. If you think 10-15h is too long without food, ask for a bite (and a beer). You'll never cook the same way again. Highly recommend.

We made a lucky discovery with Wasantha's cooking while here in Galle. It's very small and cozy place, having 1 large and 2 small tables. This place is run by a lovely family of 5 people, with Wasantha being the main cook. I called there to make arrangements for dinner and the owners were very accommodating, offering to cater to our preferences for level of spiciness and types of dishes a day in advance. The location is near a popular area for tourists, and yet at the same time situated in a quiet area away from the crowds at a private home. The tables are located on a porch that has a newly built cover, decorations, and a large ceiling fan, and music, that creates a lovely, relaxing comfortable ambiance. The food was probably the most authentic Sri Lankan food we have had while here and it was exceptional. Every single dish was flavorful-- some of our favorites included the lentils, cashew curry, carrot salad, papadam and coconut roti. The food was prepared right there in a kitchen adjacent to the dining area, and I caught a glimpse of the kitchen which appeared to be clean and organized. The food all tasted fresh and delicious. The family members are gracious people and very friendly as pleasant, and it really was a pleasure to meet them. I highly recommend this place to any one visiting the area. Just one more note: it appears that their menu changes, so you can either call in advance to see what they are serving, or take your chances with some surprise cuisine, or plan in advance with them. Also certain days they will serve meat and certain days they will not--as per common practice here in Sri Lanka.

We stoped for lunch in this cute and cosy restaurant and besides the ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS food it was also a wonderful experience that made our stay in Sri Lanka even more pleasant. We tried, without exaggeration, the tastiest chicken ever, had an interesting conversation with the owner about dogs, cats and talked about itineraries and things to see in Sri Lanka. He gave us the most useful tips about our trip and it made a huge difference for us. Thank you Sam! We took the road you advised us and saw the elephants and monkeys along the way :) We wished we’d have more time to attend the cooking class but it was just too far to get there from Mirissa. Overall, I can’t recommend enough this place. A true gem!

Wow what a wonderful place! We went there last night, and had literally the best meal we've had in Unawatuna, having visited many countries I can honestly say one of the best meals ever! A cosy family run business, with general background music and the most amazing food! Pets are a big part of this family business and they had 3 beautiful well behaved dogs, who were full of love for us too. Wasantha had freshly cooked my partner a full fish, and myself I had Black Pork curry, which came with another 4 curries and rice, she came out and explained to me what each one was, as she cooks different fresh curries every night, unlike many restaurants where you just get standard food! The waiting staff were equally as good, nothing was too much trouble for them, we felt like we were eating with family! Saddened to read another review for last night as we were there at the same time, we saw this couple and they did nothing but complain about everything they could, maybe they should have found a McDonald's or KFC if they wanted to eat quick, and rubbish food! I can't fault anything with this beautiful family run business!

Truly magic cooking class with a truly magical family! Definitely the highlight of our trip, in addition to the 5 delicious curries meal that we got to eat at the end of the class. So much love and care went into each pot. Meals are totally customisable to your preferences and spice level. Can't recommend this authentic and traditional cooking class enough!

The best curry I ever ate in my life. We booked the cooking class. First we went to the local market to choose the vegetables and fish for five different types of curry. Wasantha then showed us the proper traditional way to cook it. The traditional way of cutting the vegetables, using the secret family recipe spice, choosing the right spices for each type of curry and lots of tips and tricks. Everyone here was extremely kind. The course duration was 5 hours, so everything was very detailed. They are also very considerate of vegetarians, not letting the meat touch the same cooking utensils or surfaces like the vegetables. The fish was cooked last, so that anyone who doesn’t want to see it can just ignore it without missing anything else from the cooking course. The restaurant is in the jungle, so you can see the family of monkeys living around the restaurant. We even got bananas to feed them. Would definitely recommend the cooking class, and if you don’t have time for it you should at least try the delicious food!

The food is amazing! It was so delicious that we decided spontaneously to do the cooking course for the next day. My personal highlight was the Avocadocurry. We did not have enough money with us and you can’t pay by card but that was no problem. The son of the owner offered me his bike, but at the end the owner Sam drove me to the ATM. The cooking class was very nice. First of all we went to the market and bought 5 different types of vegetables. After that we started cooking 4 curries and one salat. Meanwhile we got lots of tips and tricks by the chef. She ist very nice and kind and willing to share here knowledge. Also thank you for sharing so many recipes. In conclusion: Lovely restaurant and cooking school, with amazing food and very helpful and friendly people around.

This food is AMAZING! If you are looking for delicious and fresh Sri Lankan cuisine, you will get it here. This family run restaurant isn’t located on the main drag, so you wouldn’t see it if you were just walking the streets of Unawatuna, but it is 100% worth finding it on maps and going to visit. The family are so incredibly nice and make you feel very welcome. You may wait a little for your food, but that is because they cook everything to order and from scratch. This is also stated in the front page of their menu, but the wait is worth it, because the food is fantastic! We had rice and x4 vegetable curries, plus chicken curry and it was all cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender and everything had so much flavour!! You can also choose from 4 different levels of spice for your meat, from none to super spicy, so it’s catered to everyone. Oh, and the banana fritters are the perfect way to end the meal if you are feeling like something a little sweet afterwards!

The food here was amazing. I had their specialty dish that is served only by them in Sri Lanka. TBH, I was a bit apprehensive at first on how it would be. But I am glad I went ahead and ordered. The herb rice was yum and the chicken had so much flavor. The whole family was very warm and welcoming. They also take care of the dogs and cats that they have rescued. They go above and beyond to help you as well. Was loving meeting this beautiful family and having one of the best meals here in Sri Lanka.

I attended Wasantha’s cooking class today and spent a wonderful two and a half hours learning how to cook the most delicious and authentic Sri Lankan food. Wasantha took such care and pride in sharing her recipes with us and it was a joy to cook with her. I would thoroughly recommend the cooking class (or even just a visit to their restaurant) to anyone. Wasantha’s food is the best I’ve had in Sri Lanka.

If you want to experience next level Sri Lankan food you should definitely come here. We had the avocado curry, some batu and vegetable curry and it was amazing. I have never experienced this type of creativity in the Sri Lankan kitchen before, even though Sri Lanka is my second home. This is quality. The people are really nice and it feels like home. So, good food, laughs and happiness, what more do you want!?

There aren’t enough stars in the world for this restaurant! Wasanthas is by far the best food in Unawatuna if not the whole of Sri Lanka. The love and care this family put into their food and service is like nothing I’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world. I can’t just pick one dish as they’re all so good, what I can tell you is that I returned night after night to try as much of the menu as I could. Wasantha and her daughter Sasa work miracles in the kitchen and I was always greeted with open arms by Iranka and Sam running front of house. So much so that they became like a second family to me on my trip and im going to be so sad to leave them. However I will of course be back! This place is a hidden gem and should be experienced by all who visit Sri Lanka.

Incredible traditional Sri lankan home cooked food with a twist. We ordered the milk rice with additional curries, as well as the avocado curry. They were all delicious. The avocado was very unique and apparently won't be found anywhere else. It really didn't disappoint. The service was a tad abrupt. Not much care and the bill was literally thrown onto our table at the end. I would go back though as the food was outstanding.

Just FABILOUS food!!!! Magic hands Wasantha has. Very high quality ingredients and very special flavour due to the home made spices by the long family tradition. I love every combination of rice & curry - and Wassntha has many!! My husbands favorite: calamary curry and the kids: sweet chicken and the brownie of course!! 😇 The BEST LOCAL CUISINE ON THE ISLAND!!! 🚀 In the COOKING CLASS I Iearned to cook different curries and got a great introduction to the specific herbs and spices. Thank you very much for showing and sharing your recipies and spices 🙏🏼 I am looking forward to show them to my family in Germany!! 🇩🇪 what we especially loved was the more than open-hearded, open-minded, caring FAMILY of Wasantha 💜 Her husband Sam also took us on a 2-week fabulous guiding tour around Sri Lanka - for more details see “Sam’s tours”!

This was a very fun cooking class! We learned a lot and made so many different types of curries and at the end we got 20 original recipes. As a Sri Lankan myself, these recipes are authentic and tastes like my mom's cooking. We came and ate here twice before the cooking class and loved the family and talking with them every time so we decided to do the cooking class and it was one of our highlights of the trip! The family is so kind, generous, and has the cutest dogs.

Wasantha's Place is amazing. It is right in the middle of the jungle (we even had a monkey stealing their bananas) and it's beautifully built and very tidy and clean. We took a cooking class with Wasantha and it was an amazing experience. The food was delicious, we learnt a lot about Sri Lankan Spices and Vegetables and how to cook 5 different currys with them. The people there are more than nice and assured that we had a great time. Would highly recommend. The price was totally worth it and not too expensive. They even take you to the market to get fresh vegetables and fish.

We were here for dinner. The traditional Sri Lankan food was excellent, freshly cooked and different from the rice and curry that you can get everywhere. Wasantha is putting all her effort in cooking her dishes and you will be able to taste that. Try the milk rice with fish if available. After dinner we decided spontaneously to join next days cooking class. Wasantha took us and two other guests to the local market in Galle buying vegetables, fish and chicken. We got to decide which vegetables to cook, so we took the chance to go for the exotic ones that are hard to find in Europe. Everything was of cause included in the price. Wasantha payed the shopping and the TukTuk to the market. After returning Wasantha showed us to prepare all the different curries for the vegetables we cooked as fried orchid roots curry for example, which I am sure you will hardly find in any other restaurants menus. Wasantha was very patient with us. We spend four hours with cooking, afterwards we of cause had dinner from what we created. Wasantha is a lovely and strong lady but most importantly she is an excellent cook with more than 30 years of experience (in cooking and life) which she was so generous to share with us. We will come back if we are in Sri Lanka again. Thanks again to Sam (Wasantha’s husband) for sharing the Arrac and the great tips for our further journey!

A cooking class with Wasantha turned out to be one of our favourite days in Sri Lanka!! We were taken to the oldest market to pick our fresh ingredients and the lovely Sattah (wasantha's daughter) explained all the different types of fruit and veg and how to pick the best type for cooking. After the prepping and explanations by Wasantha we then got to eat...... seriously good food!!! We had already been in Sri Lanka 3 weeks at this point and hadn't had anything as good as that. It was that good we went back the next night for more! A lovely family run business who genuinely care that you enjoy the food and have a good time. We miss you Wasantha, Sam, Sattah and the dogs!!!

We have eaten some wonderful meals whilst in Sri Lanka, though this was without doubt, the freshest and tastiest of them all. However this was not the only reason to visit, Sam and his family were extremely warm and engaging, taking the time to explain the ingredients and the lengthy process required to produce such an exquisite taste. Sam even took the time to rescue a stranded couple on the road and order them a tuk tuk back to their hotel. A truly wonderful experience

Fantastic. We stopped on a walk from Jungle Beach to Unawatuna - best lunch stop of our trip. My avocado curry was so unique and delicious, as was hubby’s curry rice - such amazing flavors. Go here if you can.

I can't recommend Wasantha's highly enough! Their rice and curry is the best I've ever had, and I've been living in Sri Lanka over 3 years now. I love the intimate setting of the place. Ever since the first time I visited, the whole family have been so kind and welcoming. And I love their sweet dogs. Sam is always so helpful when I bring my dogs too and he has a great knowledge of the whole island. I had family over visiting me from the UK, so booked for 5 of us to do the cooking class. First we visited the fresh fruit and vegetable market and Sasangi was very knowledgeable and showed us the best ingredients to use. Then Wasantha showed us how to make 5 different curries and the various spices. My sister was obsessed with their family secret spice blend, so I even bought some for her to take home with her. The Pumpkin curry and banana blossom are my favourite!!! The last 3 years have been so challenging for Sri Lankan businesses, particularly with the covid pandemic, then the economic recession and power cuts, and this family have always gone above and beyond to make sure they continue to deliver amazing food and service, despite all of this. I wish I could give a rating higher than 5 stars!

Great experience! The host Wasantha provides incredibly delicious food (the best we have had in Sri Lanka so far), and her husband Sam creates a fantastic atmosphere with his storytelling. The meals are prepared with fresh ingredients from the region and their own blended spices, surpassing everything we have tasted before. Thank you so much for the amazing food and the wonderful time! We only dined at their place! Highly recommended!

Visited - March 2022 We came here for dinner during a blackout. It was slightly hard to find the place, as it was lit only with candles. Once we got there, we were met by the owner, who gladly took our orders. We ordered the Fish Curry (Rs 800), Prawn Curry (Rs 900), and Lion Beer (Rs 600 a can). We asked our food to taste as authentic as possible, i.e., Sri Lankan spicy. The food was served quickly, and it was spicy enough. We enjoyed the overall experience, minus how dark the place remained throughout the blackout (which lasted the whole dinner experience). We didn't mind a bit of a romantic vibe, but it was already hot, and it was nearly impossible to see what we were eating. We also noticed that the owner was loud and a bit rude to other people. Perhaps it was the heat, but his behavior did not seem appropriate. It is safe to say that we didn't revisit the place, as there were better blackout-friendly restaurants in the area.

Wasanthas is an absolute gem! We enjoyed their food multiple times during our stay and even took part in a cooking course, which was an amazing experience. The family atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making each visit feel like coming home. The authenticity of the flavors and recipes takes your taste buds on a delightful journey. I would 100% recommend Wasanthas to anyone looking to savor genuine, delicious cuisine in a friendly, charming setting.
