Matara fort. In 1560AD Portuguese built a fort in the peninsula between the nilwala river and the ocean. This was captured by dutch in 1640 and they have fortified it with a 760 ft long ( Centre section 200ft .sides 260ft each) 40dt wide 15ft tall wall with 22 cannons. The fort was captured by Kandi an king Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe during 1761 rebellion and the Dutch recaptured it in 1762. The Dutch reformatry chuch and many buildings were completed by 1760. It's also reported that within the fort there was a elephant stable of 80 elephants. The moat in front with water diverted from river is not to be seen today On 24th Feb 1796 it surrendered to British. The clock tower of 39 ft tall was built by British in 1883. The old town of Matara (or Mature as it used to be spelled) is located on a land tongue between the ocean and a green lagoon, and is protected on the landside by Matara Fort, a 13 meter thick, 5 meter high rampart. On all other sides it is unprotected apart from the natural barrier of the water. The three parallel lanes with one-storied colonial style houses are quiet, because today all the action takes place in the new town. The thickness of the rampart is impressive when you stand on top of it, but otherwise it isn’t much to see. The gateway is disfigured by traffic signs, posters, banners, and wiring, and on top of the rampart a modern clock tower has been built. The bastion on the seaside was demolished to make way for the coastal road that leads into the town.

The Matara Fort was built in 1560 by the Portuguese and was substantially re-built by the Dutch in 1640, following the capture of Galle. The fort, which consists of a large stone rampart, occupies the promontory, which separates the Niwala Ganga lagoon and the ocean.

There is nothing much to see here at this place nowadays. It used to be one of the largest Dutch forts in the country, which was later used by British as their administrative division. So many valuable buildings here are abandoned and left to be ruined.

You can cover the place if you go to Matara. But nothing much to see there. As the place is more privatized now with houses. But a good place to have an evening walk. Not much happening compared to galle fort.

Only the rampart and a fort gate are remaining. From the other two sides it is guarded by the river and the sea. However the dutch church and the court building still remain in the original condition. In overall, the rampart with white classical style clock tower is quite a landmark to matara.
