Not sure why many of the other reviews don't mention how much rubbish is on this beach. During off season (May), this beach was empty but full of plastic trash. Weligama beach certainly didn't look like any of the pics in the other reviews. Perhaps during peak season it's tidied up? Out of the 4 popular south coast beaches we'd visited this was definitely the most disappointing.

Best place to learn to surf, nice long beach line with decent swell. Can get too crowded but surfing schools are available in abundance. Would suggest ask for Kavinda or Lion they are good at teaching novice surfers. Con: The city sewerage goes directly to the sea nearby the surfing spots.

Good place for surfing and sea bath. Sea is shallow and upto around 100m distance from the shore depth is less than 5ft. Avoid monsoon rain season as sea can get extremely rough. Surfing board rental places and surfing trainers are available.

Beautiful beach but sadly lots of broken glass in the sand and water. Be careful when swimming/ surfing and walking along the beach barefoot :(

Beautiful stretch of open waters. Fitting for beginner surfers. More skillful surfers may head into the sea to catch stronger waves. Once your done with a day of surfing and enjoying the sunset you can enjoy the fresh catch of the day by dining at one of the many beach side restaurants! Absolutely love this town and what it has to offer!

Good waves on high season, small waves out of season. Don’t get ripped of whenever renting the board. Many little places in front of the beach. Amazing sunset.

A great for place for surfers or people who wants to learn how to surf. Not for those who want to swim. You can find a guide every meter, and all are kind and well trained.
