A beautiful waterfall located in the Kalutara district of Sri Lanka. Flows beautifully into white. The audience is also mesmerized. But there is also a sense of wonder. Many people go to bathe there and have miagis. But a great place to visit and enjoy the beauty of the environment.

Makeli ella is a very popular waterfall in Western Province, Kaluthara district. This small beauty is created by a branch river Makeli Oya which belongs to Kalu Ganga. This can be easily reachable from a main road. When travelling from Mathugama direction, you will meet Lathpandura. At Lathpandura you have to travel in Malkawa road towards Kelin kanda. The road at the Kelin kanda area is also very calm and it goes via shady forests where you can feel a mild climate. There is a stage constructed near the Makeli Ella Waterfall where you can have a nice view. But please avoid bathing at the base pool because of it is extremely dangerous. There were number of people who died at this location due to unexpected incidents when trying to enjoy with water at the aterfall. Makeli Oya power station is situated closer to this waterfall.

Makeli Falls is one of the most beautiful and equally terrifying waterfalls in the environment. Be careful and come back to experience the beauty here. Because I say so. Currently, more than 40 lives have been lost to this waterfall. Some people say this is Mara's water It is also known as Ella. The reason is because of the number of lives that have been lost to it so far.

The Makeli Ella Falls is about 10 metres tall and from afar, this waterfall flows amidst a scenic part of Kalutara, namely, Thumodara. The water flows down and forms a pool at the bottom, and beyond that, going 6 metres downhill, it meets the Kuda River and mingles with the sea through the Kalu River. Before the project began, this falls was a local favourite for baths, but now, you can find a viewing platform only, and bathing is prohibited in the pool below the falls. DO NOT get into the water in the base pool no matter how good a swimmer you are. According to the villages, about 39 lives were lost in this place due to the sheer depth. You can, however, have a safe path upside of the falls. Use the platform built for observations to safely admire the beauty of the fall.

Makeli Falls is a beautiful waterfall. it is located in a place that is very easily accessible to such a tourist. It belongs to the Kalutara District. The existence of this waterfall and the various legends associated with it can be identified in the study of folklore. The waterfall is very scenic but it is very dangerous to go down near the waterfall. At present, about 50 tourists have died while visiting this place. Therefore, it is very safe to view this waterfall from the waterfall viewing point. There is also a sign bord at the starting point of access to the waterfall about the insecurity here. People living in the area say that a person who visits this waterfall at least once a year dies. Adjacent to this waterfall are two ditches 50 -60 feet deep. It is very difficult for a very talented swimmer to swim from that place. Archaeological evidence suggests that Prince Veediya Bandara was hiding in this place for protection. Due to the rocky gorges and water gorges in the area, it is considered to be well protected. All of you who love the environment, it is very important to keep the surroundings clean here. Visitors to the waterfall are not charged and parking is charged at Rs. 50 per hour only. If you wish to visit this place using public transport, you should take the 437 Kelinkanda Matugama bus. I remind you again and again that bathing in this place and going down from the viewing point is very dangerous. Have a nice day...! Enjoy...!

One of few waterfalls with a observation deck. But not cleaned properly, and handrails are broken, not repaired. Be careful if you are going there.

One of the waterfalls found along the Kukuleganga River, height is about 10m. You need to climb down steep flght of steps to see the fall. This fall area is marked as dangerous because of the very slippery surface of the rock, be extremely careful, many lives have been lost here. There is a small shop that sells local food and drink there, please support them.

  • 5/5 Lakshika P. 4 months ago on Google

This is one of the most popular waterfalls in Kalutara District, situated en-route Kukuleganga Reservoir from Molkawa. Makeli Ella is a waterfall with a higher water capacity, hence it is not a safe place to have a swim or a bath. The rock bed is slippery and around 40 lives have been lost to this waterfall.

nice place....the best is the road from Bulathsinhala leading to the place. Area is very peaceful and quite. They now also offer rafting close by. The small shop at the roadside adjacent is good for a plain tea and a bite. recommended for a nice get away from Colombo, less than 2 hours.

A great place to enjoy the nature with a beautiful waterfall. You can easily access to the waterfall via concrete stairs from the car park. Anyone can think it is not dangerous to bath in the main pool at first sight. But according to villagers it is very dangerous place which is deeper than 60 feet with strong water currents. It has been recorded 36 deaths so far. So please be careful Bathing down the stream is not very dangerous. Be careful on sudden water level rises in rainy seasons.

The 10m Makeli Ella Fall is said to resemble a bride’s veil from a distance, and round weather-eroded granite stones pepper the landscape. Before the fall there is a large natural pool, and 6m downstream a fairytale-like islet watershed, known as Thumodara. Later the streams fuse and flow to the Kuda River, and via the Kaluganga River to the sea. Unfortunately, the natural beauty of the fall and its surrounding area is at risk due to the nearby Kukule Ganga Development Project. It seems possible that the resulting displaced soil could seep into the stream, causing it to silt up. The Makeli Falls is situated in the Kalutara District. Take the Matugama – Agalawatte road to Lathpandura and then the Molkava road to reach the fall. All though this was a popular bathing place before the Kukuleganga Project, now a viewing platform has been built upon the river, and bathing here is prohibited. The fall can be reached on the route to Kukuleganga Holiday Resort.Don’t destroy environment at your visiting time.
