Jutting out into the ocean, Flag Rock lies at the southernmost tip of Galle Fort and once used to be an imposing Portuguese bastion. Nowadays, its crumbling walls and prominent clifftop location make it a popular place to watch the sunset. The views are breathtakingly beautiful as the sun dips into the ocean. As numerous street vendors roll up around this time, it is also a great place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the laidback yet lively atmosphere. In addition to this, it is also worth heading here earlier in the day; you can often see local cliff divers hurling themselves into the waters below.

This bastion and the surrounding wall areas are probably the best spots to see a breathtaking Galle sunset over the sea. If you are lucky enough and sky is clear or only a little cloudy the view is magical

lighthouse🐋It is a tower with a bright light at the top, located at an important or dangerous place regarding navigation (travel over water). The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and to warn boats of dangerous areas. It is like a traffic sign on the sea.🍁🐙🐠🐚🏖️🏝️👌

Galle Fort and the small town are nice. But it's garage all over the small town. The architecture and the layout is very nice. But it's so much touristy that feels fake. If you are staying nearby, like hikkaduwa or Unawatuna, definitely worth checking it out. Otherwise, would not recommend.

This rocky and stone outcropping offers up some great views of the blue water below, sightlines along the fort walls and the lighthouse. A short stop but worthy of the walk.

Great place to chill at sunsets. In the afternoon some Jumpers jump into the water from the walls. Vendors can be annoying.

Galle Fort Flag Rock Bastion is beautiful spot. You could have nice view over the Indian ocean, specially, it is good place to have nice view of sunset. And, it ideal spot for photography. This bastion gives access to walk on the fortress wall and you can image the wonderful structure and old European era military structure and tactics. It is one of the notable portion of the Galle fort.

You can see beautiful sunsets, seascapes from the Bastion. A perfect place for tourists, quite different from most of the other “touristy” spots in Sri Lanka. The town is beating with cafés and small hotels. There’s a lot of history to diverge into. Souvenir shops are expensive as usual. People visiting should at least keep half a days worth time to explore and experience the area. Best time imo is after 3/4PM, when the heat settles down a bit. The shopkeepers are friendly.

Take a moment to see the sunset from here. 🌅 It's an amazing view! This bastion, located in the south west corner of the peninsula, offers a 360° view of the fort and the sea. 🏝 There's a small opening in the enclosure from which you can take a dive. 🏊

In the 16th century, the Portuguese constructed a small outpost upon this large and natural cliff. It was the Dutch who developec it as a bastion byConcordia, fortification walls. A tall mast was erected on this bastion, on whie the Ditch lag vas hoisted, hence the name Flagrock Bastion. The pit in which the mast was crested can stil ba seen on the bastion terrace. This flag was used to signal friendiy incoming vessels to the Calle harbour. Messages were also exchanged between the bastion and ships by firing into the air. It was here that the British built Sri Lanka's first lighthouse in 1840. Constructed out of rat iron, this lighthouse functioned for nearly a century before it was destreyed by an acciiental fire in 1936. The circular foundation cut on the living rock to anchor the base of the itha tower still survives. The remains on the bastion suggest that a 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun was installed in 1943 by the British during the Second World War

A 360 viewpoint. A Beautiful & crowded place. This bastion lies at the southernmost end of the fort and has also been known as Visser’s Hoek and Viaggeklip Bastion in the past. According to J.W. Heide, the Dutch flag had been hoisted here by 1733. In Gems Cordine’s book Description of Ceylon, it is stated that in 1796 the British flag was hoisted here. In 1848 the first lighthouse in the island of Sri Lanka had been constructed here. The light had been powered by kerosene oil and gas. It had been destroyed by fire around 1930. Today this is one of the most popular places for tourists to catch the sun sinking beneath the sea over the horizon and during day time you can find a group of local daredevil group jumping off the bastion in the rocky waters below for entertainment of the tourists.

One of the most beautiful places inside the Galle fort. The Light house and the Rumassala Hill is visible. There are jumpers who perform rather drastic jump from the rock to rocky sea. This is the view of the light house and Rumassala from Rock bastion.

👍👍 The history of the Galle Fort goes back to 1588 when king Rajasinghe I (1581–93) of Sitawaka attacked the Portuguese capital of Colombo forcing them to retreat to Galle, one of the flourishing ports from the ancient times. Here they built a small fort out of palm trees, coral stones and mud. They ca...
