It might have been a great place to visit in the past because of its historical significance and the view that it had on the Indian Ocean, but the Colombo Port Old Lighthouse has lost most of its appeal when the failed development of Port City blocked the view. It's worth a quick visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't recommend a special trip just to see it.

Colombo light house is located just walking distance from the Galle face green , towards the harbor road( chaithya road). Early days access to this placed was restricted due security reasons, but now it’s not so. The place this light house located is call “Gal Bokka” point and you can get the nice panoramic view of sea and the harbor. Currently this was Under Sri Lanka Ports Authority. This light housed was constructed in year 1952, to replace the Colombo old light house, which is now function as a clock tower in Fort. There are four sitting lion statues are located on the base stage and total height of the structure is 34 meters. There are two different size gun battery in the Light house premises. Larger ones were from UK, and were setup there in year 1952. The smaller ones are used for gun salutes on special days such as independent day.

Built after independence, Gall buck lighthouse showcases a blend of post independent and traditional architecture. The lighthouse once offered quite magnificent views of the Indian ocean from its considerably higher base which was obscured due to recent land reclamations of the port city. The base once used to perform 21 gun salute on the independence day but not anymore . Yet it offers quite a decent experience to visitors even now.

Colombo Lighthouse is maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and could be easily located at the marine drive near the Colombo Fort. It was my first visit to a Lighthouse, and I was fascinated by the monument. They have maintained it quite stunningly, and it is one of the beautiful landmarks in the city.

Calm place in Colombo. We can watch the Colombo port city, city and harbor from this place. However, the navy officer who worked there told me it is prohibited to take photos of the campsite. This is a beautiful place.

Well maintained lighthouse. Perhaps the only intact lighthouse in Colombo city open to public. Good for a short visit if you are nearby. Built in a 1950s, this place, used to be a nice scenic spir with a beach view and harbour view. But now after they built the port city by filling the sea its landlocked. Lost most of its beauty and appeal. Beacuse its a Navy controlled premises, there are couple of armed security personal present. They will observe you, but wont bother you. Its worth a visit anytime, kids love seeing a actual lighthouse.

Peaceful atmosphere in the middle of the city. Best place to view the sunset without much Hussle. Mostly visited by couples or families. Very near to galle face green beach and many famous restaurants. I saw a post stating that the closing time is 6 PM in some website or review, but there is no closing time for this light house. It's always opened and the best time to visit is around 5.30 PM and can view the sunset and the construction site of China Port City. Dutch hospital, near to this serves the best food.

On the west side of the city, facing the sea, this lighthouse is heavily built around. You can go up to the pedestal, the path to the tower is blocked by an armed guard. A quick TUKK-TUKK visit is worth it.

Nice place. Restricted from taking pictures which could expose any other buildings in the area. High security zone. Located more towards land area as per the results of new constructions taking place. Can watch the port city area which is under construction. No shelfter available. From the historical value to architectural concept, there is a lot to discuss for monument enthusiasts. Could improve to attract tourists.

A historic place with a fading view. It has a peaceful atmostphere. Best time to visit the place would be in the evening. The sunset is really an awesome sight to watch. The place dates back to the fifties and still has its charm. Would have loved to see the place in its former glory when it had a breath taking panoramic view of the Indian ocean. The place is less visited as compared to Galle Face thats adjacent to this place. The Galle face Galley, nearby, offers good savouries.

  • 3/5 Amal N. 1 year ago on Google
neglected and forgotten. As the security threat having reduced and the significance of a lighthouse fading fast it's important for those who maybe responsible to use the premises effectively. Evening entertainment and restaurant is recommended.

  • 2/5 Simon L. 4 years ago on Google
It's a bit sad, that the view in the direction of the sea is blocked. But the new port will destroy that view anyway. So the lighthouse is actually quite pointless. And also when I was there a military guy came to me and asked me things so I felt quite uncomfortable and left.

Galbokka Point Lighthouse, Colombo was built in 1952 after the decommissioning of the nearby Colombo Clock Tower Lighthouse. This round concrete tower was inaugurated by Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister Rt. Hon. D.S. Senanayake. The focal height of the lighthouse is 26 meters (85feet). The white light flashes every 10 seconds. The light beam is visible up to 25 nautical miles. The front of the lighthouse is painted black and white. It is situated on the western coast on the approach road to the Colombo harbor. The lighthouse is active and open to the public.

  • 5/5 Renu P. 3 years ago on Google
    (Translated by Google) The tower was constructed in 1856–57 as a clock tower and completed on 25 February 1857. [1] The tower was designed by Emily Elizabeth Ward, wife of Governor Sir Henry George Ward (1797 - 1860). [1] [2] The construction work was done by the Public Works Department under the supervision of Mr. John Fleming Churchill (Director General of Public Works). The 29 meter high (95 feet) tower was the tallest structure in Colombo at that time. [3] The original watch was commissioned by the then Governor Sir Robert Brownerig (1759 - 1833) for £ 1,200 in 1814, but kept in a warehouse, for economic reasons, until 1857 when it was finally installed . The lighthouse was deactivated when its light was obscured by nearby buildings and released on 12 July 1952. [4] The modern Gal Buck Buck lighthouse was built on Marine Drive as its replacement. The original Colombo Lighthouse was located on a citadel on the seaward side of the fort, a neo-classical structure, with a 23 m (75 ft) wooden light tower rising from a two-story circular brick building and surrounded by a wide colonyde happened. . [5] It was built in 1829 and later demolished between 1869 and 1871 with the removal of the ramparts of the fort. [6] The clock system was constructed by the famous English watchman, Dent, who was also responsible for the construction of the clock ('Big Ben') at Westminster Palace in 1852. On 25 March 1857, the clock tower was formally commissioned. [4] Clock tower bells almost contain the main bell. Two auxiliary bells weighing 250 kg (550 lb) and 152 kg (335 lb). Navigational lights were moved to the tower in 1867. [7] The revolving light of the clock was made by the Chance Brothers. The height of the focal plane was 140 meters (460 ft) above sea level and the light was visible to an eye 61 meters (200 ft) above sea level at a distance of 27 km (17 mi) in clear weather. The light was a triple flash at intervals of 30 seconds, each flash being of a second duration, and each longer eclipse of 18 seconds duration. [8] The light was lit using kerosene. In 1907 it was converted to gas. In 1933 it was replaced with 1,500 candle power lights powered by electricity. In October 1913, the clock had to be replaced with the current clock, with a six-foot dial flashing with opal glass for illumination, and the clock tower was re-inaugurated on 4 April 1914. [4]

Archaeological site, maintained well to a certain extent but the problem is that now there is no view of the sea at all. All that you see is land again, which is the port city. I guess very soon this lighthouse will be of no use. I doubt if it is use already becuase there was another light house built further into the sea.
