Incredible place to visit. The movie James Bond 007 No Time To Die brought us here. We didn't know this place existed until we saw the setting in the movie. We stayed in a cave room for 3 nights, and it was awesome. The locals are lovely and helpful. There are also fantastic restaurants in the area. I highly recommend a visit to this historic place.

One of my favorite city in Europe! Part of UNESCO, Matera is a city that will definitely be love at first sight. Paved roads and delicious Italian food, get yourself lost on their narrow streets. Lots of stairs, slippery if it rained. 5/5 summer destination.

The enchanting city of Matera is something unique. If someone hasn't visited the city, they can not understand the feeling you get when you walk through its streets. It is one of the oldest settlements in Europe protected by Unesco heritage. In the old town, you will find unique corners, beautiful houses, mysterious alleys, and neighborhoods full of history. You will love this place as long as you feel like walking in the narrow streets of the city. It's definitely one of the places you should see even once, it's a lifetime experience...!!!

Wooow, what an amazing town - the absolute highlight of our Italian heel week long tour. Matera is considered one of the oldest settlements in Europe. Cave dwellings around the old town date back to thousands BC. Later people learned that instead of digging the limestone and living in caves, they can use it for building houses. In 1950's the town was proclaimed 'Shame of Italy' as people were living in unhygienic conditions without electricity, water and all together with their animals in tiny houses, and were ordered to abandon the city. Today, Matera is a UNESCO heritage site and was even Europe's Culture Capital - a real must see town

Wow. Cannot describe what a beautiful place this is. Spent a few days here exploring it and still only saw about 60% of it. So many places to see and has some lovely bars and restaurants. The days flew by and you feel like it's not a real place.

Really looks like youโ€™ve gone back in time. Preservers wonderfully and if you want to really know the history of Matera a tour of the Sassi is the way to go. Find a good local guide and feel the magic.

Magical place, wandering through the narrow streets of Sassi is something different. As soon as you enter the old city you feel like you just traveled in time. Getting lost in this city is nothing but pleasure. Also I recommend taking a hike up the hill opposing the city to get the best view.

Loved the city. Takes you way back in time. You can find the parking easily near the entrance of the city. From there you just walk and explore the city on foot. Do visit the cave houses which is a fantastic experience. There are many viewpoints from where you can get a good Panaroma view of the city.

A must visit UNESCO world heritage site! Did you know that the latest James Bond was filmed in Matera? The town has a very unique hierarchical architecture. Itโ€™s really fun to get lost in the alleys and discover the wonders there. Itโ€™s interesting to think so many people still live in Matera.

Very beautiful place worth to visit and to walk around! However, entrance fees (5 EUR for adults) to enter some of the cave apartments but this is not a must from my perspective. Just enjoy the historical houses and lanes from the outside and the nice view on The Valley and caves on the opposite! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Matera is a very beautiful town. We stopped for a few days on our way back home from Apulia and it was totally worth the extra time. By night it's even prettier.

Matera has been the highlight of our journey to Campania/ Puglia of Italy. Deeply spiritual and spectacular at the same time. Walking around and hearing several music instruments from so many people who were learning, was just overwhelming. In Matera art is everywhere and everything is art. I will return.

It's a unique place and it's really nice to walk around with this stone houses. I will not recommend some of the placement to the people with knee problem coz it is lots of stairs that is uneven and as well some of the walk road. We almost fall down walking ij this area but just be careful that you won't our balance. It is wonderful to see this place . Once in a life time for some people to be here and we are included in that experience.

An amazing place with so much history. No wonder Salvador Dali has multiple statues which really match into the city. One of the oldest settlements that still exists. Be sure to really walk the whole Sassa. Itโ€™s a true experience.

It's a special place where you can see how it was a long time ago. Life in caves with animals... Sightseeing is amazing. A cozy small mini family museum inside of one of these houses full of old stuff met us a coolness. It was exactly needed because of 40*C outside.

The experience was breathtaking. Itโ€™s unbelievable that people live here. You can hear the people chattering from down there and it feels so surreal. If you are visiting Bari, I recommend you check out this place. It is one of the oldest cities in Italy.

This place is truly amazing and if you are in the area you definitely need to go for a visit. The atmosphere is brilliant and the place has multiple churches to discover. The view is really nice and you can also look at the caves from a distance If you want to see the caves you need to go from another way as its a bit far to walk from here.Plenty of restaurants to wat and have a drink.

Amazing and very interesting city (Sassi area). Upon our arrival we felt very medieval atmosphere even it was not so long ago when people really lived there. We visited Matera i n July. This I don't recommend, because it gets really hot.

Fascinating place, you cannot miss a visit and at least one full day to go around. You learn how people lived in the country centuries and also thousands of years ago.

Always beautiful to visit . A must stop for a day to walk around the streets and takin the scenery. Recommend 1st time visit to take a guided tour to understand what Matera is about

A very interesting ruin with rich history. Matera has decent connectivity from Bari, however, the information regarding public transport is so scant, both on google search and official sites (Ferroviarie Sud Est). This kinda dilutes the overall experience of the trip. Most travel sites advice you to spend a full day there but half a day is all it takes before you feel the need to leave, especially in August heat! To summarise, it is a very photogenic place but some people will find it a bit too monotonous.

A very nice place to visit, in the summer months make sure to bring water. We were a little lazy so we took the car from the backside and skip a lot of the vertical climb but you may very well start from Matera. In reality I had an injured knee and wasn't prepared for the short climb. Fascinating place with a lot of wonder and history, don't skip this area if you're visiting Matera!!

definitely worth the trip. such a beautiful and historic town. I highly recommend going through the little streets and going into bay museums that you encounter on the way.

Wonderful and charming place. We visited as part of the tour that helped to learn about the area and skip queue when entering old house dwellings and one of the stone churches. Place got really busy around lunchtime, so perhaps better to plan to visit early in the morning. Toilet facilities are not free, so make sure to have some euro coins.

Beautiful place, unique in the world. It looks going back in time. The architecture and the atmosphere of the place makes everything magic. You can find a lot of bed and breakfast where staying, but be ready to walk with the luggages. The town itself is small but nice. A guided tour is suggested to reach the best angles and to know where the movie sets have been placed. It could be also very romantic, if you come with the right person of course. You need the car or an organized tour to reach the place, but once you are here it is not needed. Highly recommended

Great place to visit. Lots of stairs๐Ÿชจ make sure you have water and proper shoes. The stairs are slippery. Running or Hiking shoes ๐Ÿ‘Ÿwith a good grip are recommended. Enjoy the restaurant on the way back up.๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡นโ˜•๐Ÿน

Super stunning! It's a beautiful city to walk through and get lost in. I would advise visiting the little museum about how they used to live in the caves. It gives a detailed/ simulated view of how the people used to live there.

A beautiful historical site but if you are traveling with children, a local.guide with ape car is really recommended, so you do t new to walk too much, you can visit some important landmarks and the cost of the local cave - home visit is included to the service.

Amazing structure of The Church of San Francesco dโ€™Assisi, a church built in Baroque style in the San Francesco Square, in Matera. The church is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, after the saint visited Matera in 1218.

magical, unique, sadly abandoned by the inhabitants, but interesting to tourists and the film industry. a special charm to the city was given by the sky, which perfectly blended into the houses, the color of cappuccino

Make sure you spend a day there and get lost in the maze of stairs that you will not find where you end up going, but you will surely get somewhere and amazed by the whole experience. I would suggest this is the place to overnight stay as you will be exhausted at the end of it.
