I visited the Cathedral on a cold & blustery day whilst waiting for my mum who was up visiting in UHG. When I walked in the door I was surprised by the space and dark walls but also the light that came through the stained glass windows and the silence even though there were alot of people walking around. Although the pews were marked out for social distance there was no problem moving in & out of them. As I had a good bit of time I just sauntered around with trying to take everything in. I met a lovely person who very kindly offered me a Miraculous Medal for my ill relative and also included him in their prayers later that day. Whilst I spent at least an hour looking at all the decorative mosaics, various stained glass windows that had been donated through the years, the model of the Cathedral, organ and various displays dotted around the i side I didn't feel rushed and probably have spent more time. It cost 1.50e to park for the hour and had no problem finding a spot but there is another carkpark accross the road where you can park all day for 6.50e

Absolutely beautiful cathedral. Came in whilst visiting the Galway area and I was absolutely blown away by the stained glass windows and enormous statues inside. There is a ton of seating the front, sides and rear of the main alter and I’d love to visit again for mass. The shop sells amazing items including beautiful marble rosaries and religious items for all occasions. Definitely stop in if you’re passing by!

The Cathedral is beautiful and it was a special day, a wedding. I had the opportunity to visit and listen to some violin music. The mosaics are amazing. You can enter for free or leave a donation.

Galway Cathedral is a stunning architectural masterpiece, with its imposing Gothic-style structure and intricate detailing. The breathtaking stained glass windows and serene atmosphere create a sense of tranquility and awe-inspiring beauty. A must-visit landmark that perfectly blends spirituality and artistry in the heart of Galway, Ireland.

So calmly and wonderful Cathedral. Free to entry. You have to visit it if you are in Galway.

I'm not a Christian by any means but I do appreciate the serenity of a location and this has it. We visited St Mary's in Dingle and that serenity was lacking. The building was more modern than expected but the colours in the dome and from the stained glass were sublime. Sometimes I envy people their faith and get the fact that buildings like this can reinforce it. I won't be converted to religion any time soon but I think we'd be worse off without places like this where you can come and reflect regardless of your spiritual leanings.

We were at the church last night as Tommy Fleming was playing. The church was a beautiful backdrop to his amazing voice. The cathedral is always worth a visit

Beautiful Cathedral that has a very calming atmosphere. It is both grand but very grounded due to the materials used in its construction. I found it to be a very peaceful place even with the tourists taking pictures all around. People are respectful of the space and the beauty of it shines through.

Beautiful Cathedral! Must visit if you're visiting Galway. Entrance is free. Parking is paid. Around €2 per hour l with day max being €8 at the time of writing this review. There's another parking lot about 700m away that's €6.75 for all day. Inside of the Cathedral is spectacular and so peaceful. We parked here and visited the Cathedral and rest of town of Galway. 2 hours were enough to check it all out and have brunch nearby at Esquires Coffee.

Check the website for Mass times. What a stunning structure; inside and out! The lighting, the windows, the wood panel ceiling, the center dome above the four-sided altar! The side rooms for prayer and reflection! Just beautiful. I wish I’d been here for an Easter or Christmas Mass… I’ll bet it’s gorgeous! The choir was angelic. As an American I found the portrait of JFK a tad out of place… but, hey! when in Rome, right? Just fascinating. I could have spent hours admiring the Stations of the Cross, the detail, the ornate architecture… the building is newer than I thought (circa 1965 I believe)…but the architecture style had me believing it was much older.

One of the best places in Galway. The view is impressive, inside and outside the building. There is a gift shop inside the Cathedral that you can find some interesting religious articles.

This is a holy place - while roaming on the streets of Galway, we came across this place and decided to explore. This holy place is a very huge worship place, it was amazingly calm and full of positive vibrations … we sat there for an hour without saying a single word and we felt like we were recharged - rejuvenated….!! There is a shop within the cathedral where all the holy books and souvenirs of Christianity are available to purchase. There is a paid lavatory too in the cathedral. It has the huge parking lot too.

Beautiful cathedral with gorgeous stained glass windows, domes, arches and architecural accents. There are several different intimate areas to pray and the mosiacs are remarkable. Their gift shop has wonderful locally made Celtic crafts and religious items. A special thanks to Mary in the gift shop who was incredibly patient as we asked many questions and she helped us find the most perfect nativity scene and to Monsignor Rabbitte who blessed our nativity scene, which will become a family heirloom. The Cathedral is a must visit while you are visiting Galway! You can truly feel the presence of God. Thank you for making us feel so welcome!

Amazing Architecture and lovely scenery around the Church. Inside has a calm atmosphere. A bit tear jerking, as the light reflects on the stained glass. I liked it in here. And the history of the church is worth reading about.

The cathedral is a short walk from the city center and you can enjoy a stroll along the river as you walk to it. Very beautiful inside and worth a short visit if you have the time.

Visited Galway Cathedral and what a beautiful peaceful experience. I had the opportunity to take some pictures of the amazing internal and external architectural features. The Cathedral is looked after and maintained by very helpful staff who are only too willing to convey their knowledge of the Cathedral and it's amazing history. It is not mandatory but please leave a small donation for the upkeep of this valuable local historic building.

Despite its relatively new construction when compared to thé older European cathedrals, the feeling was similar. It’s well worth the visit. Furthermore, I found the parishioners to be friendly and welcoming. I’m not a catholic, but I sat in for a mass. I especially enjoyed the priests calm delivery and the wonderful choir.

Very impressive Cathedral. One of the top 3 buildings in Ireland (if not number 1). Would love to see the Latin Mass done here on occasion.

Galway Cathedral celebrate 50 years since opening. Inside, there is exhibition about building it, clergy responsible, and some other details. Whenever I visit it, I have the feeling it is much older. And visiting Galway without seeing Cathedral, and walking on the pathway down the Corrib river until Latin Quarter is magical. Though now no one collects entrance fee of 2 EUR, there is donation box for the purpose. To try describing the beauty of marble floors, stone walls, or wooden ceilings, or dome guarded by 4 archangels, would be waste of time. You have to see and experience it yourself.

What a beautiful cathedral. The stonework and colours of the marble and limestone were spectacular. It was amazing to explore the last built stone cathedral in Europe. A well kept and loved addition to a beautiful city.

Nice place. it was worth a visit though newly build (1965) but it looks very ancient. loved the inside architecture. the painted glass window and interior are classy. a must visit and it's not too far from eyre square. walkable takes around 15min or so.

Always good to have a walk to and around the Cathedral. Not so busy at the moment with tons of people, so good photo opportunity for photographers. Near millennium Park which is love to sit by. Bus routes close by. Lots of tiny hidden historical points close by to stop and visit.

Pretty boring for a Catholic cathedral. Nice walk there along the river, but just not much to see here. I took a picture of the liturgy schedule for Easter for those who are interested in those things.

Love the people, the location and the church! The bells can be heard for quite a distance from the church. They are very mindful of the covid situation and still provide the feel of home

If you visit Galway you have to find 10 minutes to visit the Cathedral. It is certainly a recent building, about 60 years old. Well built and decorated with huge mosaics. Despite the internal dimensions, it is a peaceful environment. Traditional, functional, massive and made with local materials. The beautiful Connemara marbles have been used for decorations. The cathedral stands on one side of the old Galway prison which was acquired by the church in 1941. Incredible to think that most of the costs had been covered by donations! Definitely highly recommended.

Lovely place (and no admission). However good to donate a bit as it’s one of few churches I have seen where you can really see move around “freely “ so they deserve it.

Impressive Cathedral! I was here in 2014 before the recent renovations and then again in 2021. When in Galway I would definitely recommend a visit, whether you are religious or just want to learn about the history and see the architecture. There is no entry fee, but the suggested donation of 2€ per visitor is very fair.

The location of the Cathedral was so unique. It seems like a building on an island because it is in the middle of two rivers. The art inside is unbelievably beautiful.

Really interesting array of styles that made the stained glass windows, and one on the upper row on the nave I've never seen so graphically violent a scene.

  • 2/5 Martisha S. 7 months ago on Google
Stone building, 0 spirituality. Cathedral on the site of the prison. Nothing interesting or special. For me specifically, there was nothing related to art. The temple is only 60 years old -/+. There is a lot of beauty in nature around. Ireland is beautiful. there is no need to visit this A cathedral that has been a prison for a long time.
