It was in Kandy where the very first successful tea cultivations were made and at the Tea Museum, visitors can view for themselves all about Ceylon’s tea cultivation. Abandoned for more than a decade, the Tea Museum was refurbished by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Planters Association of Sri Lanka. This vintage tea museum showcases displays of James Taylor and Thomas Lipton who were famed tea pioneers. The museum also exhibits some classical tea processing equipment and artifacts. The Tea Museum is a sprawling factory which has its factory machinery houses on the ground floor, demonstrating the process of tea manufacturing. The upper floors of the museum displays the museum exhibits, houses a library, an area for audio-visual presentation and a restaurant. Visitors will be accompanied by knowledgeable tour guides who will explain all about tea manufacturing and at the end of the tour, visitors will be treated to a free cup of tea at the museum’s tea room.

This place is on high elevation. It's on top of a hill and quite cooling. The staff gave very detailed description on the process of the tea factory. There's 5 floors and the lift is not working. Each floor has different things like one floor only showcased teapots, ground floor only the tea equipment and top floor is where you buy and try some tea. Plenty of carpark space.

It is a very good place to learn and know about tea processing and the history of tea leaves, there is a tea stall so you can buy various types of tea products from the tea restaurant you can have a cup of Ceylon tea. If you wish to try other tea products you have to pay, you must visit this place if you ever drink a sip of tea in your life.

The Ceylon Tea Museum is located at the Hantane Tea Factory, about 5km. (3 miles) from Kandy. Hantane was one of the first areas successfully opened up to tea cultivation after the failure of the coffee enterprise, but the factory that now houses the Museum is a relatively modern building, constructed in 1925.

About 400m away from hanthana bird park, you could visit both places without taking a ride. You can park about 10 vehicles close by the museum. Tickets were 200rps and at the time of our visit,we were entitled to a free fresh tea( black tea). Has tea related machinery, a bit of history, and at the top, there is a discounted tea shop and a small canteen with all sorts of tea.

At the first glance I thought it was just a place with a lot of machinery and equipment and nothing much to look at. But yes there are machines and other things but more than that they give us knowledge about how the things happen in a tea factory with a demonstration from a small scale exhibition model factory. They have sampled most of the tea which are produced in Sri Lanka for every market segment of the world. The premises are maintained quite good. A fee will be charged (Rs. 200/- at the time) for the entrance and at the end of the factory tour you will be given a free Black tea cup to taste.

A oldest historical place in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Ceylon Tea Meuseum is the knowledge garden of tea production, how the Srilankans people struggled for producing tea using unique techniques. Authority have shown their greatest hospitality for the visitors. They have appointed good presenters to share knowledge about this garden & how they spread their business all over the world.

Tickets price is 200 LKR. There are 5 floors and the 5th one has the restaurant. You can buy tea varieties at a 40% discount. You can enjoy a cup of tea with cookies as well. The museum is well maintained and very descriptive. However, they close at 5pm and no guided tours will be given when they are about to close. Enter at least before 3.30pm - because otherwise they'll recommend to go to the restaurant first then there won't be anyone to describe or show the mechanisms of old machines. Parking available for 10-15 vehicles. The access road is not in a good condition several pits in the middle of the road and several shape bends.

Great place to relax and taste tea here. You can see oldest tea processing machines here, kept as museum piece. Almost four floors, one staff will accompany us to explain the process. Top floor u will have tea, fresh and real tea is given as a complement, never miss that tea. Infact it's a actual tea which gives u wow experience.

The museum is located in a heritage building. It is five stories tall and constructed out of timber. I loved the heritage feel and the exhibits ranging from the late 19th century. Cafe at the top floor offers a free strong black tea for tasting. We can also buy other varieties of tea for a price. Tea Thali is a set of seven different teas offered for LKR 1000. Overall it was a memorable and pleasant experience.

The best place to learn about history of Sri Lankan Tea industry. The place has 5 floors. 5th floor is only for Tea sales. For locals, ticket cost is just 100/=. From 1st floor, you would see the machines and tools which were used those days. Also, you would see the mini functioning tea factory which would give an overall idea. Floor by floor more details and history of Sri Lankan Tea industry are there, especially about James Taylor ! Friendly staff and they give intro. If you need to know more also, they would explain in detail too. A must visit place in Kandy !

Absolutely fabulous. I would say a must see in Kandy even if you plan to visit a working estate. Its on the grounds of a former 900 acre plantation closed in 1980s. Still has a few dozen acres working but really just enough for pictures. Breathtaking views on a clear day and very knowledgable staff. Not a tourist trap, no pressure tea shop with very affordable tea including some processed on site. Tip your guide if they do well...ticket includes a free hot cup of tea.

Very bad place because it doesn't function properly at all. Nobody explains and even their restaurant doesn't work. They say their juice machines and ice tea machines are broken. The pictures that were in the internet are all false. There are many machines bt we don't even know for what purpose they we used. It's not even self explanatory. Very bad & sad experience. We will never visit that place ever again and will never even recommend it to anyone later.👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

Sadly it's just a small museum which is a bit interesting but probably not worth the money. We were hoping for working tea factories, however as the closest ones were quite far from Kandy, we had to resort to the Ceylon Tea Museum instead. The building has some cool history, and it was good to see the machinery, but these sorts of things should be extremely low cost to go and see as nothing works and you just walk around looking at old machines. The best part was being able to try a cup of tea which was good, but even then you are only offered the basic black tea, with anything else being extra. I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you don't have the time to travel a bit further to a working tea plantation.

Ceylon tea museum is located about 6kms away from Kandy city. It's a good place to go and see how tea is manufactured and also learn about the history of tea in Sri Lanka. The entrance fees for tourist is 800lkr which includes a cup of tea on the top floor after the tour. There's also a tea boutique where you can buy teas.
