Beautiful place. We can see the area from the top is amazing. In the top only one can stay and others needs to step down for some stairs for give space for the one who comes down from the top. Its very narrow, very much difficult to come down through the tiny space. And also Saivate temple(God Murugan) and mosque also there. But please do not pollute the place with plastic bags or any other stuff. Make our environment clean and beautiful 😊 that's all our responsibility.

A wonderful climb altogether, starting from the gate itself. A 6km drive from Gampola which can easily be reached by either road or train. A perfect location for a one day outing. The location is quite picturesque not only from the top but also from the base as well as along the driveway.

I've always wanted to have this amazing experience. Loved it here. The road climbing towards it, was steep with a few tough bends. But soon after we got in, we were offered with one of the most magnificent panoramic views I ever enjoyed. An experience for lifetime.

Although the road is very well paved, the existing mountains give us a very difficult journey. Everyone worships, regardless of race or religion. Everyone must climb the tower in unity and solidarity. Avoid carrying unnecessary equipment and supplies, especially as many travelers travel. Avoid carrying items that are exposed to the wind due to high winds. It is a beautiful tour and will end after 0500 pm.

Great place to visit as a traveler, better to take a private vehicle, and climb up the last few meters by foot. Well known for the 360 view from the tower. This is one of the most iconic modern architectural creations in Kandy district/ central province. Better to visit in a weekday, since in the weekends this place gets so crowded, that it is very difficult to reach the top.

Fantastic place in Kandy. Purely a thrilling experience, 3500 metres above the sea level, really a memorable one. For foreigners & locals they have separate toilet facilities. Have to be Careful while going down, because it's very risky. Walking up to the mountain is not so advisable, gravity is just pulling down due to the slope surface.

The view is amazing. Highly recommend going up there from the ticket point via a vehicle. There is a parking up there. The tower hike is very dangerous if there are many people up there. The stairs have very tiny space and it can be difficult if you’re a big person. Do not take kids out there.

Temple is located on beautiful hills, view from there is outstanding! It was rainy and foggy when I came but after 20 minutes sky was clear and I could admire the view. I recommend to take TukTuk and not to walk from ticket point, because its long, steep hike on hard road - save powers for climbing temple itself and then rest in lovely Java Cafe :)

There has never been such a thrilling incident in my life. Everyone who loves adventure has to climb to the top at least once in their life The wind speed will increase a little as you go up. The stairs get smaller to go up .. at some point you have to lean down Your courage is self-evident 🙂🙂

Nice place to visit in sri lanka. Thrilling experience. Nice view around the temple. It has very narrow steps in some places. Heavy wind at the top. If you go with kids you have to very careful. It is hard to go with the crowd. There are some garbages at some places. Please dont put garbages. We have protect these places for our future generation.

Not maintained well. No one to coordinate people or in case for an emergency. No proper washroom or water supply. But they charged twice for tickets. One for RS.70 when entering to the gate. RS 20 for entering to the tower. It's not as beautiful as what you see on photographs.

Ambuluwawa is situated approximately 1,965 feet from the level of Gampola town. The Ambuluwawa Mountain stands approximately 3560 meters above sea level. The tower stands at a height of approximately 48 meters and the elderly and kids are not recommended to climb to the top of it. The mountain road runs along the serpentine surrounded by mountain landscapes, cliffs and unique plants, which cannot be found anywhere else. Interesting places to visit include three ponds, a sacred Bodhi tree, water Park, stone Park and garden of herbs. The Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Center was inaugurated by Sri Lanka’s former Prime Minister, Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayaratne, popularly known as “Di Mu”, who was born near Gampola. For those going from Colombo, Ambuluwawa is situated 85 km from the capital city. Ambuluwawa is a biodiversity complex and Sri Lanka’s first multi-religious sanctuary situated in the central highlands of the country. The Ambuluwawa Trigonometrical Station, in Gampola, consists of large winding tower resembling a stylized Buddhist stupa, a Hindu kovil, a Muslim mosque and a Christian Church. It is situated about 5 km from Gampola’s town centre. Reaching the top of Ambuluwawa one can experience the most amazing views which could sometimes be covered by the ongoing mist. However, once the mist clears off the view can be scary and freak out climbers, especially those who have a fear of heights. Do note that hiking Ambuluwawa is not at all dangerous or risky, but it would not be the ideal kind of adventure for those with a fear of heights. Avoid leaning on the railing to capture photographs especially at the top as this is extremely risky and one could easily slip off from here. Ambuluwawa is a relatively easy hike to do which gives you 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, forests, rivers and towns. It is an area richly diverse, with evergreen forests, blossomed flower plants as well creepers and about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families including a variety of medicinal plants. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by many mountains including Piduruthalagala from the East, Bible Rock (Bathalegala) from the West, Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) from the South and Knuckles Mountain Range from the North. Apart from these mountains many other mountains are also clearly visible from here and adds to the beauty of the area. These are the Hanthana Mountain Range, Hunnasigiri Mountain and mountain ranges associated with Algalla and Kadugannawa. There is a cool mountain breeze in the area due to this reason. The Ambuluwawa Hill and the adjacent forest is designated as a forest reservation which is named as the Ambuluwawa ICC Forest Reservation. The history of the Ambuluwawa Temple dates back to the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV. It is said that the Ambuluwawa Peak was the center of the Gampola Kingdom during his reign. But there is nothing with historical or archaeological values in here.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful. You can see a 360 view. A strange experience. But ... you have to think about whether it's fair to destroy an undeveloped mountain, an ecosystem, and spend money on a tower and a road that leads to it. This tower/temple is located on hill and purely made for thrill seekers to climb up through narrow staircases to enjoy the scenery of gampola. There's a long trek through the woods but a road is there to access by vehicle. If you keen on adventure and privacy then you may tire your legs by walking to the top. The view is amazing at the top amidst the fog and cold breeze. Only for the youngsters.

Located Ambuluwawa village near Gampala town in Central Sri Lanka. Four religious temples are there (Buddha, Jesus, Allla and Lord Muruga) the very attractive place is the Tall observation tower. The observation tower is constructed entirely of cement, stone and iron bars, with a height of 54.55 meters (180 feet), a 4000 sq. ft. building on the ground floor, with 4 feet wide staircases and handrails leading up to the top, two levels of circular staircases 2 feet wide inside the tower. Being narrowed gives some fear, 70 feet above has exterior stairway and becomes very narrow and scary, uneven profile of stair width and uneven height of the raisers makes one really feel very scary with the wind blowing. A kind of adventurous journey and feel happy once we reach at top. Very difficult since people from top to trying to come down and there is no space to pass them is kind of fearful negotiation for safety. This is the place to visit in week days of season not on week ends since more people visiting this place on week end and much difficult to climb up & down. In cloudy days there are huge mist pass on this tower make more scary and different experiences. From the top one can see all 360 degrees view of the neighbouring town, forest, Magawali Ganga river, Adam’s peek, and other natural resources. One can visit at least one time in life but this observatory tower is not suitable for elderly people, disabled people and kids below 12 of their age.

The site was built on the highest point in the area, there you will find the four temples beside each other also (mosque, church, budist and hindus) . Going up the tower is a bit challenging with kids especially the last few meters where it gets too tight and fits one person only, can do more for safety procedures. The view from above is amazing. Make sure to take a break in the coffee shop once done they serve great drinks with a nice view from above. Entrance is 2000 PP.

People don't know how to behave, especially the Russian participants, everyone pushes you, which is not safe and pleasant in this small space. Everyone delays a lot because they need to take a lot of selfies and that's why you wait for a really long time at the tower. I don't recommend if you don't want to spend your money.

Visiting the Ambuluwawa Tower in Sri Lanka was an enchanting experience that left me brimming with happiness. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the central hills, this architectural marvel offers a panoramic view that simply takes your breath away. As I ascended the tower, each step unveiled a new facet of its beauty. The intricate design, a fusion of various architectural styles, reflected the rich cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka. The vibrant colors and meticulous detailing added a touch of elegance to the entire structure, making it a visual delight. Reaching the observation deck was the pinnacle of joy. The sweeping vistas of rolling hills, serene lakes, and pristine forests created a picturesque canvas that seemed to stretch endlessly. The play of sunlight on the landscape added a dynamic quality to the scenery, enhancing the overall charm of the place. The ambiance was serene, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of blossoming flowers. The well-maintained gardens surrounding the tower provided a tranquil setting for contemplation and relaxation. It felt like a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. What made the visit even more delightful was the warmth of the locals. Their hospitality and eagerness to share the history and significance of Ambuluwawa Tower added a personal touch to the experience. I left with not just memories of a beautiful place but also a deeper appreciation for the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. In conclusion, Ambuluwawa Tower is more than just a sightseeing spot; it's a haven of happiness and tranquility. The captivating views, coupled with the architectural splendor and the welcoming atmosphere, make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a retreat into nature's embrace. My heart is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to witness such beauty, and the joy of the visit will linger in my memories for years to come.

It is a very beautiful place in Sri Lanka. You can go to the top of the tower. That trip is very exciting. Don't go here on holidays. There has been an increased popularity in recent times especially due to the breathtaking views you can experience when you climb to the top of the Ambuluwawa Tower. It is also known for its narrow spiral staircase which some visitors find challenging to climb. It is one of the coolest places to visit in Sri Lanka

Awesome place. I'd recommend driving to the top car park if you can. Steep hills but most cars and van can get up there. It's then a short walk to the tower. Nice easy walk up to the top of the tower. It gets very tight and narrow near the top.

Very nice! We went there during a holiday (17th of march) so we couldn’t get to the top of the tower, only top of the hill/mountain. As a tourist entrance fee is 600 LKR per person. We were singled out from long line of locals to buy tickets, which was a bit uncomfortable. We would have gone on a non-holiday early in the morning, if we would go again :)

You will see beautiful views from the top, but to get there will take you a lot of time and courage. We were there before the closing time and there were really a tons of people, mostly local teenagers. Stairs are very narrow, and the higher you get - the narrower they become. Sometimes it’s difficult to squeeze yourself on the stairs, but guess what? People who are walking down the tower will squeeze between you and the handrails, because there is no another way to go down. And you will spend a lot of time in the queues on that stairs, letting out people who are going down. So very dangerous, climb it only if you are up to some adrenaline in your blood. However, pictures from the top are gorgeous.

Probably one of the best places near Kandy. The view from the top is great and you can plan about 1-1.5 hours here. However, there is really a lot of activity on the tower, it is definitely not for people with a fear of heights or claustrophobia.

Ambuluwawa Temple is a beautiful location that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. Upon climbing to the top of the building, visitors are treated to a panoramic view that showcases the natural beauty of the region. The location itself is quite nice, with well-maintained pathways leading up to the temple. However, one issue that needs to be addressed is the cleanliness of the building. Unfortunately, the building has not been cleaned properly, and dirt and debris are visible everywhere. The floors have not been wiped for an extended period of time, which has resulted in a layer of dust and grime accumulating. This detracts from the overall experience and can make the visit less enjoyable. Another area that requires improvement is the washrooms. They are not as clean as they could be, and visitors may find them to be less than satisfactory. It is important that the facilities are properly maintained and cleaned to ensure that visitors have a positive experience. In summary, Ambuluwawa Temple is a beautiful location that provides stunning views of the surrounding areas. While the location itself is nice, the cleanliness of the building and washrooms need to be improved. If these issues are addressed, it would make for a much more enjoyable experience for visitors.

This place is very beautiful and 360° view is marvelous. We are visiting on a public holiday ( national day) that day is very crowded. But no big issue. Parking arrangements are also good. The only thing is we could not reach the top of the tower. On these days when there are a lot of tourists, the police or the organizers will intervene and handle the people on the top of the tower so that everyone can walk to the top of the tower without any trouble. Then we all can visit the top of the tower to see the beauty of my mother land. ❤️

  • 4/5 Chalk H. 1 year ago on Google
Man made structure purely to entertain visitors, great to climb and see the views, shockingly managed. 11am midweek, tower had a high turnout of people, but maintenance team decided to pain, without any pre warning or signs placed. So once you start climbing the narrowest spiral, it's too late. Damaged clothes with paint that won't come out!

  • 1/5 Azra K. 11 months ago on Google
Climbing up is unnecessary. People are coming from the opposite direction and you can't pass each other. If there is wind, the tower sways slightly. Terrible experience. It's much better to go to the smaller tower and take a picture.

  • 5/5 Jonatan S. 10 months ago on Google
Very high building, be careful for your hats with the wind! the view is awesome.

  • 5/5 Linda Francisca R. 5 months ago on Google
If you have no fear of heights this is your place to visit. I didn't make it to the top because it was quite busy and it gets really narrow up top but still the view was breathtaking. There are also a lot of monkeys and a little church, temple and mosque to see/visit. You can walk from the entrance of the park to the viewing point which might take you a while or take a tuk tuk up to the hill.

  • 5/5 Chris F. 6 months ago on Google
A must do in the area. Get a TukTuk or taxi to the top. You'll pay for your ticket at security, it's really sign posted and you can't go past without a ticket. 'Foreigners' pay $25, locals pay a few pence, this is just how it is. It's well worth it anyway. You'll walk to the Temple building - mind the money's and be careful of the gorgeous dogs as they may have mange. (Shhh I take some pet treat sticks from the local shops). There's water stations to wash your hands if you do touch them. You'll take a mixture of internal and external stairs as you climb higher and higher. Approaching the summit you can only walk sideways like a crab, or maybe you're skinny and will be fine 🙂 The view is amazing, you're already very high and the summit takes you to an impressive c3,500ft. If you're afraid of heights, you can stop at a one of the stairwells inside with external viewing platforms. If you're happy to proceed you can go right to the top. Be prepared to duck into passing spaced in the form of small rooms (very small) otherwise you're best to past people butt to butt 🤣. It gets more difficult at the top to pass. Again, this is well well worth the visit. Beautiful sights, fresh air and lovely people.

  • 4/5 Ahmed Alaa E. 4 months ago on Google
The place is absolutely beautiful. You have to take a Tuktuk with fixed price to go up to the bottom of the tower. With the Tuktuk, you pass through the main entrance gate, where you have to buy tickets. The ticketing employee tried to trick us to pay more (I bit he tries this other tourists all the time), he simply added 500 LKR out of nowhere, but ended up paying the exact amount we should pay. Climbing is quite easy. Though, I wouldn’t recommended it with small children, it’s not that safe. As you go higher, the stairs are getting tighter is tighter. The fence has still big holes that may not be safe with little children. The view is amazing up there. I would mark it as one of the highlights of Sri Lanka. Just avoid it if you can leave small kids somewhere.

  • 5/5 Ayaaz S. 8 months ago on Google
It's an unique architectural design and you'll get some very stunning and breathtaking views. I'd always recommend you to take a walk instead of a tuk to get the 100% experience. I would rate it a 5/5. A perfect escape from the city life I would say. It's the air for me, it was super fresh😩❤️ and you guys can get the panoramic views once you reach the top.

Great build with everything around this tower as well. Absolutely beautiful view from the top of the tower if you are game enough to climb up. Only criticism that I have is the ignorance from the people who is visiting these amazing places by throwing rubbish everywhere.

  • 5/5 Dushmantha D. 6 months ago on Google
One of the best tourist destinations in Sri Lanka located in Gampola, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. This is a man made tower built on top of a mountain as a concept of former minister late De. Mu. Jayarathne. This called Biodiversity Complex. If you are coming by bus cannot go to the top. But small Toyota coaster can go up to middle of the the hill. Then it has a tough hike. Cars, bikes, Tuk Tuk can go to the top. But for everyone can by Tuk Tuk 🛺 they have separate price than standard rate due to risk and the toughness. Even you come by personal vehicle 🚗 don’t go to the top. Pls have a small hiking 🥾 which gives you a different experience. Anyone can go up to the highest level of the tower but it’s bit challenging for elders, kids. Need to specifically mention for foreigners there is a dedicated wash room which is average. But local’s wash room is really unpleasant. Make a note on it when you’re traveling.

We arrived just before the place closed at 5 pm and managed to get tickets. Riding up on a scooter was fine, but coming down was tough without gears. It's safer to use one of the temple's three-wheelers instead. We didn't check the price, but it's better to pay than to risk getting hurt.

We have to reach the entrance from gampola town. Then there is three wheeler service to reach the tower for 600 rupees. Then we can claim through well constructed steps. With the cool 😎 environment, it is a best experience to reach the top and see the view of gampola.

AttractionsEdit Temple wood carvings Among the remnants of Gampola era, the most famous temples are Lankathilaka, Gadaladeniya and Embekka Devalaya. The ancient stone scripts (Shila Lekhana) of Lankathilaka temple helps to reveal a considerable amount of vital information regarding the Gampola era. The statue of Buddha of the temple indicates style of South Indian arts. The Ambekka Dewalaya possess a large collection of wood carvings, where no other temple in Sri Lanka owns such a collection. The town is located amongst Sri Lanka's central highlands, hence the climate stays mild throughout the year. Located 3,567 ft. above mean sea level, Ambuluwawa mountain hosts a hill top tourist spot that houses a biodiversity complex celebrating environmentalism and cultural and religious diversity. A notable feature of this complex is a large winding tower resembling a Buddhist stupa, which is located on the mountain peak. Gampola has a lot of shops and a huge residential area. DemographicsEdit The majority of people in Gampola Town Urban area's are Muslim and Sinhalese people respectively. The is a small minority of Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils. Others include Malay, Burghers. Ethnicity in Gampola Urban AreaPopulationPercentMuslim 50.41%Sinhalese 50.35%Sri Lankan Tamils 0.97%Indian Tamils 0.20%Others 0.05% Source:statistics.gov.lk. GeographyEdit Gampola, or so called Gangasiripura because of the Mahaweli (Mahaweli Ganga) flowing by its side, is a beautiful town itself stands 300 – 500 m altitude, situated in a valley surrounded by hills and located near to Kandy. Geologically the region belongs to the Highland Complex of Sri Lanka and major rock formation is Precambrian charnockite gneiss with strips of quartz and biotite gneiss here and there. Soil profile of the region could identify as Red Yellow Podzolic soils and Mountain Regosols. Mean annual rainfall is in between 3,000 and 3,500 mm (120 and 140 in) and mean annual temperature is in between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77 °F). Due to the geomorphology of the Gampola and its vicinity, which characterised by steep hills stand from plain, it was declared as a landslide prone area. However, with its flat terrain with being a catchment area of River Mahaweli, our region has become highly used in agricultural purposes both in traditional (paddy, chena, home gardens) and industrial plantations (majorly tea). Tea, natural forests, mixed home gardens, steeply dissected hilly and rolling, soil profile with the prominent A1 horizon and lithosol soils can be considered as its unique ecological background. Administratively, Gampola is an urban council belongs to the Kandy district of Central Province.[1] In traditional administration region system, it once belonged to the Maya rata before the 13th cent. AD and in Kandy period to the Ganga Pahala Koralaya of Uda Palatha of Kandy district.[2] Prehistoric period Historical periodEdit Aryan colonisation or native innovations introduced some new subsistence patterns toward the agriculture and husbandry as well as sedentism. Mahawali River itself provided water while many other chanals and rivers flow into the river too. The flat terrain at famous Gampola wela or paddy fields of Gampola is cultivated by the water of an ancient irrigation called Raja ala origin at the Ulapane. Another paddy field of the area famous as 'Mahara'.[6] This background of economic change is closely tied with the spread of Buddhism since 3rd century BC. The first such evidence of human settlements in the historic period are clearly defined by the Early Brahmic Inscriptions (EBI), so such in Gampola area could take as a support to identifying early settlements in the lower montane valley of the Mahaweli Ganga at Gampola. Vegiriya Devale near to Gampola bear an EBI could date to 3rd century BC.[7] text - 1). Ambuluwawa is a scenic location situated in the outskirts of Gampola. The temple and the tower are located at a hill top, which should be reached by travelling 3-4 km from the vehicle park at the base. Either you can walk to the top, travel by your own vehicle or use a Tuk tuk. The viewing tower is the main attraction. However, it is very difficult to reach the top-most point of the tower on a crowdy day and a bit dangerous if it is windy. However, the top decks provide a 360 degree breathtaking view of the surroundings.

(Translated by Google) It is the highest point in Gampola town. When you go to the top of Ambuluwawa Tower, you can see a beautiful 360 degree surroundings. There are very few peaks that can see such an ecological area. Almost everyone who climbs here does not forget to take a selfie and also likes to upload that photo. This place is also known as a place where a large number of young people confirm their marriages.
