    • This is an ancient Rajamahavihare, with many legends tracing its history back to an early period. • The inscription says that it was continuously occupied by the monks from 888 A.D. onwards. The Culavamsa chronicle records the restoration of this ancient temple in 1270 A.D, & its reestablishment as the Centre of the monastery. • The main building was repaired & a new monastery built by the Gampola King in the fourteenth century, according to the stone inscription. • It was rebuilt again in the late 18th century after its destruction.
