Oliwa Cathedral was erected as a Cistercian church in the thirteenth century as a Gothic, three-nave basilica. It was built on the plan of a Latin cross, measuring 107 metres and is the longest church in Poland. Its beautiful interior conceals many art treasures: numerous altars, a Rococo pulpit, great stalls or Renaissance portraits of numerous benefactors of the Cistercian monastery. Its “earthly sphere” consists of black columns arranged in a semicircle and “heavenly sphere” is a vision of heaven: stucco clouds and angel  heads.

That impression changes upon entering, however, as the interior of the cathedral is simply, in a word, breathtaking. The cultural and artistic value is enormous, with many beautiful paintings lining the walkways. An interesting fact is that the angels trumpets move when the organ is being played, along with stars spinning producing a beautiful twinkling sound. Unfortunately I cannot rate it five stars as I was pressed for donating to the collection pot after I sat down to listen to the organ practice.
