This is a big museum across five floors so you could easily spend several hours here. It's housed in a previous Granary Warehouse. It loses a star for me because all the display descriptions are in Polish with no English translation. There are some Bound Guides in different languages that you can pick up at the entrance to most rooms, but they are not that easy to follow and not sufficiently comprehensive. Regarding the exhibits, it's an impressive collection of everything Maritime, covering salvaged items from sunken ships, sailing during Slavic times, History of Navigation, the Maritime economy and much more. Also don't miss the large collection of Maritime paintings on the top floor. If you buy the triple ticket which includes the Ship Museum and Maritime Culture Centre you get a discounted price. Also no need to try to do all three in one day, the ticket is valid for 14 days.

(Translated by Google) The body of the Great Armory is one of the finest examples of the Dutch Renaissance architecture in Poland and is a masterful observation closure of ul. Piwna and an important architectural accent of Targu Węglowy. The building of the Great Armory was erected in the years 1600-1605 in the western part of the medieval defense walls of the Main Town. In the years 1997-2005, many important revalorization works were carried out in the interiors and on the elevations, the most visible of which is the restoration of the stone attic on the south elevation and the overall maintenance of both facades along with the reconstruction of polychromes and gildings from ul. Beer. Piwnej.

This museum consists of three separates sites on both banks of the river. You can buy a ticket which includes crossing the river on the museums ferry which shuttles back and to every fifteen minutes. The modern site is highly recommended (caters for English speaking tourists). If you are visiting with kids head to the third floor. The other museum located inside the granaries I found a bit boring and sadly it has no English signs. There are wordy English guide books in each room that explain the exhibits but I would rather have audio guide. #letsguide, #poland, #gdansk, #visitgdansk, #oldtown, #river, #motława, #motlawariver, #waterfront, #greatviews, #touristattraction, #ołowianka, #museum

Very interesting maritime museum in centre of Gdansk next to the river. There are free lockers where you need to leave your bags. There is plenty to see about the development of Gdansk from a seafaring perspective. Some of the exhibits are displayed in both Polish and English whereas others are just in Polish.

Was a nice museum, quite interesting, but not much going on, and not a lot available in English, so you end up just looking at the models with some text. Still interesting with very cool historical maps and boats through history. Dont need more than 1 hour for this. There is another maritime museum just across the river that is more interactive, probably better for kids

Great collection of ship models bit could be way more engaging. For non Polish speakers, you need to read additional folders, adding numbers to the show cases wozld make it much easier to find the text to the exhibits.

Nice place if you spent several days in the city. Ticket contains entrance to three diff. building (one of them is a ship) I think it is interesting with or without children. My favorit pic. is small and real "crane tower" in one picture. 🙂

It’s a disgrace! Rude staff that yells at you. All texts are in Polish only and if you take the effort to translate some of them you find out they don’t say anything more than the pure name of the object. Don’t expect to learn when and how were those items used, who were the people or what is the importance of some particular technology. Terrible museum with no concept where nobody took the effort to sort the artifacts into a real exhibition. Don’t go there if you’re interested in navy, if you like museums or if you want to learn. The only reasons to visit this place are pouring rain and playing hide and seek.

(Translated by Google) The Great Armory is definitely one of the most charming buildings of the old city. This building, erected in 1602-1605, is the work of one of Gdańsk's greatest Renaissance architects - Antoni van Obbergen. The building is made of Dutch brick decorated with sandstone and numerous gilding. A real architectural wonder. (Original) Wielka Zbrojownia to zdecydowanie jeden z najbardziej urokliwych budynków starego miasta.

Well designed considering it was not a purpose made building, with dissabled access on request. Staff could speak English and do have a vast knowledge of their area. Impressive collections ranging from the ancient historic period to modern era. Beautifully tied in to Polish history and their cultural influences from the rest of Europe. Many of the Items are genuine from the exhibits displayed. Definitely worth a visit and to walk along the river and Marina.

A large museum. They have a large variety of exhibits covering a large time period from Viking to post WWII. It was a very pleasant experience. I ended up going two times as it is rather large, but realistically it can be done in one visit of 3 hours. I’d personally go when you are well rested and also purchase the ship museum it is well worth it I highly recommend stopping by this museum.

Perfect museum!! So many models, interactive installations, 4 floors of exhibitions of different times and places, from Vikings to modern Gdansk port. Additional floor for paintings of sea theme. Also you can visit exhibition on the real ship. And some real objects stay on the open area. Must be visited, especially for children and people with engineering skills.

Good and well-maintained, huge muzeum and interesting stuff to get some knowledge about the boat and sea. The only thing is that most of the explanation is only in Polish, otherwise overall it's good. And for 20 zł ( discounted student price) you can visit four branches of muzeum including: the soldek and the crane, which is very reasonable.

This museum is interesting but I think just to visit ones. Here there are many precise copies of the boats but level of interactivity in musum is not their key feature. It looks old-styled (and a bit boring). I can't help mentioning about kind guidess who shared even more information then were provided at the exposition ( people here love their history, proud and remember it)

(Translated by Google) Beautiful museum, very nicely prepared exhibitions, you can't get bored here! But unfortunately, the lady at the ticket office told us that the average time of the visit was 3 hours - yes, but I think it was a sprint. It is also bad that the price does not change, despite the fact that 20% of the exhibition is closed due to the "virus", including the engine room in "Sołdek" and the most interesting element of the Crane. It is ironic that in "Sołdek" and in order to walk along the narrow corridor, one rubs against another. Where's the logic here? I am leaving the "opening" hours ... until 4pm, without further comment? Really? It is indeed a very difficult job to sit and watch the tourists you are losing anyway for such short hours of sightseeing. Gdzie tu logika? Pozostawiam chyba bez zbędnego komentarza godziny " otwarcia"...do 16?

(Translated by Google) The Great Armory in the Main City of Gdansk is a unique architectural object. The symbolism used awakens the admiration of those who decipher it. Lions also have their "charms" and I will say "without kozers" very masculine. It is worth seeing and getting to know this beautiful object originally of a military nature. Currently - unadapted and occupied by the Academy of Fine Arts. And the Great Armory, despite not being admitted, is still a bigger Academy than its subordinate. Warto zobaczyć i poznać ten piękny obiekt pierwotnie o charakterze militarnym. Obecnie - turystycznie nieprzystosowany i zajęty przez Akademię Sztuk Pięknych. A Wielka Zbrojownia mimo braku wstępu dalej jest Większą Akademią niż jej sublokator.

The front wall looks great, which can be admired from the gardens of the nearby restaurants. Great building on the waterfront in Gdansk. Big exposition inside with a lot of items, practically arranged and displayed. Plus a museum ship anchored in front of the building. Minus 1 star because almost every explanation is only in Polish language. In English or German just a very few and very general informations. Another minus star for missing guided tours. Unexpected disappointing organization for a museum in a city who expects foreign tourists. BTW, missing informations in "more international" languages somehow typical in that whole region.

Good museum with lots of models, photos and archeological stuff. Look obsolete at a first glance though. They are updating the exhibition now, so could be better later. Not a lot of interaction and the ship near the museum is not fully available, only the deck. No audio guide and all descriptions are in Polish. But everything is almost clear without them.

A great museum with a variety of artifacts and pantings. There was one portion of the museum with information written in English and a video with English subtitles. The staff was very nice as well.

One of the attraction of old gdansk town. You can take tour passes from office and visit 3-4 places. This ship is one of the heritage of Gdansk. If you have never been to navy ship then it would be a good start and visit this place just to get look and feel.

The experience was mediocre. The museum building itself doesn't have much to show and is quite poorly equipped - the exhibition consists of like 10-20 items, majority of which are coins or replicas. There's a small recreation of boats lower deck, and that's about it. The only thing that gives it three star rating is the additional (extra cost) attraction, trip around an retired transport ship, showcasing the exterior, interior and describing major parts of it, pretty interesting to be honest.

Very interesting museum. Quite a journey through 4 floors plus full size mid 20th century merchant ship. My kids found it all very interesting. The painting collection is not worth of time except few good pictures but the historical expositions are interesting and visually attractive. The only surprise was that the museum in November were almost empty and the staff looked at as as a delay before closing 4pm... Rededicloysly early on weekend considering how interesting it is. It deserves to be open until 8pm in my opinion.

It’s an interesting collection and the buildings are very well redesigned old dockside storage facilities BUT the museology is stuck in Communist Poland and almost entirely all in Polish. The staff is not unfriendly but badly needs some basic English skills and perhaps should be a little less bossy. I felt like I was being watched all during my visit. Chill, people!

Great museum for those interested.Surely enough to see/learn/read for at least half a day if time.Children under 10 might get soon bored,so it's almost a must to bring them to the interactive museum right across if buying tickets for the mini-ferry.

They have many things to exhibit, and the objects are arranged in a tidy manner, it seems that someone worked hard with it. But there are no English subtitles upstairs, only downstairs, so when I got upstairs, I was only able to view the exhibited objects and images, I didn't understand the subtitles any more. Also, even though the exhibition is tidy, it's a passive collection, not interactive enough. There were only 2-3 such stations where you could do something interactive. It reflects such a paradigm of museums that was dominant 1-2 decades ago in Hungary, but has been outdated here since then. Furthermore, it's very tiring to STAND for many hours. Museums, including this one, should think about providing sitting facilities for visitors, because after a few hours of standing in front of the exhibitions, even a healthy young person receives such a foot pain that they would willingly run away from the further standing.

Poland's maritime history is laid out in detail in this fascinating building. There is a lot to read and digest. It's a shame there is no café halfway through, to rest and get sustenance! Seeing the wrecks recovered from the Baltic Sea, reading the historical perspective from the Polish viewpoint, with a few interactive exhibits thrown in could take a few hours. Worth the effort.
