Working medieval port crane. It is also the only surviving twin-tower gate in Gdansk. Apart from loading functions, it was also used to serve as a city gate. The crane was working until the middle of the 19th century. After the war it was rebuilt and donated to the National Maritime Museum. #letsguide, #poland, #gdansk, #visitgdansk, #oldtown, #river, #motława, #motlawariver, #waterfront, #greatviews, #crane, #medievalarchitecture, #touristattraction, #landmark, #museum, #tower, #gate, #nationalmaritimemuseum

This xrane is a peculiaroty of the city of Gdansk. You can't miss it. It is quite huge and very old. Inside the crane there is an expostion about the history of the port of Gdansk, of trading and loading goods and of merchants. Then you can also see the interior of the crane where is located the mechanism that allowed to lift and to load goods. You can buy the ticket in combination with rhe maritime museum that allows you also to use the small ferryboat to go to the other river.

(Translated by Google) The largest crane in medieval Europe (1444), older than the discovery of America (1492)! A building made of wood and bricks, driven by people walking on pedestrian wheels (like hamsters walking in circles). 30 meters high, Gothic.

Lovely historic site. Little strange being followed room to room by staff but it is off-season and I suspect they're looking after the antique exhibits. Impressive structure and interesting museum though

(Translated by Google) One of the icons of Gdańsk. Beautiful. Large. The great history of Gdańsk. A witness to the illustrious past of the city and its inhabitants. A unique structure, present in many textbooks. It is impressive day and night when it is effectively illuminated. A must see while walking along the Long Embankment. (Original) Jedna z ikon Gdańska. Piękny. Wielki. Wielka historia Gdańska. Świadek znakomitej przeszłości miasta i jego mieszkańców. Unikatowa budowla, obecna w wielu podręcznikach. Robi wrażenie w dzień i nocą, kiedy jest efektownie iluminowany. Trzeba zobaczyć, spacerując Długim Pobrzeżem.

Would love to have given this tourist attraction a much higher score, because it is fascinating and so unique. However, the staff totally ruined the experience for us. They were rude (one snatched the help sheet I was using out of my hand), unhelpful and at one point argumentative to the point that I actually suggested to one of them that they brush up on their customer care skills, as there was none evident. A smile costs nothing and the argument was so pointless and petty. If you go, enjoy a marvel of engineering, but don't expect anything from the staff.

Even my visit was quick, I had the chance to see the spot. It was quite interesting and I suppose that during the night would be even better. At the time of my visit the river side had many constructions/repair over the buildings so the aesthetics of the place was ruined a little bit.

Go to the museum next door and get a ticket for £2 to see the inside of the crane. Worth a visit to see, whilst in Gdansk.

It’s a museum-branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. Place worth a visit as a history lesson of harbour industry and medieval sea economy. A.D 1444. It was the largest harbour crane in medieval Europe. Without an induction motor, of course! How did this device work...? There were two large wooden rotary wheels inside. Dockers were going circle inside like hamsters. Contrary to appearances, the strength of the mechanical transmission did not cause quite hard work. Gdansk joined to the Hanseatic League in 1361. The Hanseatic League period was like a ‘golden age’ for medieval Gdansk. The harbour as ‘a window to the world’ and appropriate tax law began to accelerate the medieval city economy. I visited museum-branch of the National Maritime Museum in September 2015. My recommendation.
