A beautiful restored house in the row at the harbor in Gdansk. It is completely in brick Gothic style and fits in perfectly with the surroundings.

Very beautiful historic facades on a remarkable street. There is still a beautiful fountain in front of the Speymannhaus. The old town is an attraction for tourists day and night. One restaurant after the next and lots of friendly people. It wasn't the last time we were in this great city.

The Golden Tenement House used to be more golden, but today it is rather white. It used to be the richest tenement house inhabited by wealthy patricians.

It is the most richly decorated building in the historic center of Gdansk, a white facade with several statues on the upper balustrade. It stands out a bit from the other buildings, more Dutch/Northern European in style.

The construction of the current tenement house on the plot at Długi Targ 41 was started in 1609 by Jan Speymann, at that time a city councilor and future mayor of Gdańsk (from 1613). The designer and builder was Abraham van den Blocke, and the facade sculptures were made by master Jan Voigt from Rostock in 1616-18. The tenement house has a three-axial, four-story façade with pilaster divisions: on the ground floor, Tuscan, decorated with panoply motifs, and on the second and third floors, Ionic and Corinthian with a vine motif. Hermitages were placed on the fourth floor. The whole is decorated in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The program included in the decoration of the front of the building is the glorification of civic virtues, as exemplified by scenes on the panels and figures of outstanding people from antiquity to modern times. On the attic you can see the motto "Thue Recht und scheue Niemand" which means "Do the right thing and fear no one" (the Speymanns' motto). The date 1609 indicates the beginning of construction works. Behind the parapet balustrade there is a terrace and a recessed pediment gable, the gable is crowned by a statue of Fortuna. The oar she holds points to the sea (port) as the source of Gdańsk's wealth. The portal is marked with a deep archivolt, with allegories of Faith and Hope in the connections, and a sculpture of the allegory of Mercy above the entrance.

The long old town square was just around the corner from our Hotel. It had a lot of market stalls down the center of the square with cafes along both sides of the square. We visited during Polish school holidays so the square was extremely busy and the Green Gate hosting a variety of buskers most of the day and evening. An enjoyable place to stroll through.

(Translated by Google) It is easy to find among the impressive buildings. Golden house. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Gdańsk, built in 1609. The house is well known for its richly decorated façade, the top of which is dominated by four statues: Cleopatra, Oedipus, Achilles and Antigone. (Original) Nesunku rasti tarp įspūdingų pastatų. (Translated by Google) Built by the mayor Jan Speyman and recognized as the most magnificent tenement in the Royal Way. Several times she was part of the premises of the residence of Sigismund III Vasa during his stay in Gdansk. The facade is maintained in the Flemish mannerism style. It has richly gilded stone decoration which is a glorification of civil virtues. The portal contains carved allegories of faith and hope. Above the entrance there is a sculpture of Mercy with the Latin saying "Cota love it will make you happy. You will want to persecute it will overthrow you" (Original) Wzniesiona przez burmistrza Jana Speymana i uznana za najwspanialszą kamienicę Drogi Królewskiej . Zechcesz prześladować to cię obali"

(Translated by Google) Golden tenement house - a historic tenement house located by the Royal Road in Gdańsk on the Main City. It is sometimes called the house of Speymann or Steffens. The tenement was erected in 1609-1618, at Długa Targ 41, at the request of the then mayor of Gdańsk Johann Speymann, according to the design of the architect Abraham van den Blocke. The facade has gilded stone carvings, made by the workshop of Abraham van den Block, in which the alleged author of battle scenes, Jan Voigt from Rostock, was active. On the front wall there are reliefs with battle scenes and figures of rulers, including Zygmunt III Waza and Władysław Jagiełło. In the central part of the facade there are coats of arms used by Speymann. Speyman mayor's wife - Maria Judith was taken here in 1623 King Sigismund III and his wife Anne of Austria. After 1660, the building was bought by another mayor of Gdańsk, Piotr Henrich. At the time when it was his property, the shape of the Oliwa room was to be discussed. In the years 1786-1918 the tenement was the property of the Steffens family from Gdańsk. From 1938 to 1945 it was the seat of the West Prussian Provincial Museum. The tenement house was destroyed in 1945. It was reconstructed on the basis of the remains of the facade in the form of a narrow wall with a height of three floors.
