Beautiful building - but I got lost several times. A map in the brochure would be good. But at least I did find the refactorium- and wow for the painted ceiling!

A giant abbey in the St. Peter’s square. There are plenty of paintings and a treasury room inside. It is generally not crowded at all. More info on the pictures.

Very nice abbey to stop and visit. The church hall is vast and decorated like most Catholic churches, they have a 'treasure room' with old church artifacts to behold. Next door there's some options to eat, a breakfast (buffet) or at a restaurant. There's a small, free exhibit which leads to a nice big garden. They have the option now to have parties or celebrations in the abbey, which I find positive that the building is being used still instead of just being a sight. Friendly staff inside make for a pleasant experience altogether.

Very underrated place to visit in Ghent! When you book a ticket to the 'Gravensteen' you get a free visit around the abbey with a video tour! The video tour follows a monk that once lived in the abbey and takes you to places you'd never find by yourself. There's also an exciting story with a twist at the end...

A stunning place, on a par with some of the great cathedrals of the world. stunning architecture and rich history, a gem of a place to just go to and relax. It has a nice little museum attached which is mainly in dutch, but you can get a translate app on your phone, I did that with google translate and it works enough to understand what you're seeing, or you could get an audio guide. The grounds of the this place are vast! on a sunny day sitting on the green spots is lovely, there were people picnicking and people with families and games, very wholesome A real gem of a place. Also, you can more or less explore the whole place unattended and there seem to be no cameras so its really nice and relaxing and trusting. A great place to visit and highly recommended.

Beautiful abbey! I used to study in one of the halls of the abbey when I was finishing my degree at the University of Ghent. Today I went back there and visited an exhibition on the life in the countryside of Belgium (and north of France). Great exhibit and wonderful to be back in such a historical building. The courtyard is exactly how I remember it, making you feel like you are in a medieval movie.

The location of the building is quite beautiful. There is a canal right next to it. It is a very interesting building with its history. There is also a museum inside.

This is not as famous as the Cathedral but still a very beautiful place to visit! I would recommend this place if you are in Ghent. There are not many visitors so it is very quiet and calm.

I went inside to prey and there was much noise from the priest entertaining a bunch of people distracting the practice. After some minutes the priest asked me to go out because the church was closing, interrupting the praying in an impolite way.

(Translated by Google) The Alison tour with audio guide is definitely recommended. You arrive in places that you do not see with the normal tour. Small downside, the staff was not really keen to recommend this tour. 2h 500 steps in reality 1h15 and those steps were not too bad!

(Translated by Google) The exhibition of the work of photographer Lieve Blackaert was simply EXCELLENT. Super well set up with audio 'accompaniment' spoken by Lieve Blackaert. But the abbey alone is really worth it. One of the oldest abbeys in Belgium. Thorough restoration was necessary and succeeded!

  • 1/5 Willem B. 2 years ago on Google
Right now September 2021 it should be closed. Under construction. Nothing interesting accessible. No garden. Tea on a parking lot surrounded by construction. Shameful they leave it open with employees and ticket sales, but only a few corridors to wander through with building materials.

visited as had the Ghent card, so included in price. Glad didn't make special trip and have to pay just to see a very small garden full of school children and Uni students (who as locals had found the free entry through the adjacent courtyard.) It is possible to access the garden for free via the children's museum. The garden features as a key element in many guides and reviews. Don't pay. At the entrance desk we were advised as none of the exhibition was in English (fair enough) not to bother with it, to have a walk around the cloister and then go to the garden. 50 pence worth of visit material, if that. (we used the toilet, so that covered most of the suggested value).

Kontynuowali podróż do wewnętrznego portu Gandawy. Można zachwyć się fascynującą historią, potężną architekturą i bujnym ogrodem opactwa. Polecam!

A beautiful church with quite a background story from way back when, brought back to life through the Alison audio & video tour. Be prepared to take your time - up to one and a half hours - while inspecting every nook and cranny (healthy legs required!). Can't help but imagine what amazing things could be done with the state of the art positioning and AR when creating a tour like this!

Absolutely wonderful "secret garden" out back of the abbey, filled with all manner of edible plants (herbs, berries, fruit trees; even a mini-vineyard). Perfect spot for a picnic or to soak up the sun for a few hours with a good book!

(Translated by Google) St. Peter's Abbey was founded in the 7th century by the Aquitanian Amandus. The abbey quickly became particularly powerful thanks to royal support and acquired large possessions outside of Ghent as well. The buildings bear witness to the various flowering and reconstruction periods that St. Peter's Abbey went through. We find style-technical Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and mainly Baroque elements. The building complex is dominated by the imposing abbey church, which was built in pure baroque style from 1629 and whose design is attributed to Pieter Huyssens. The remaining monastic buildings, predominantly dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, are only the eastern block of an initially much larger complex. As already mentioned, the Romanesque monastic buildings, which had a rather complicated floor plan (confer Cluny) and were built according to the rules of the Benedictines with the cloister south of the church and north of the refectory, were almost completely destroyed by iconoclasts. The slow reconstruction took place in late Gothic style and traditional style.

(Translated by Google) Wonderful exhibition at the moment: 'Heeren is leaving'. It contains 4 storylines, each of which is engaging and sometimes catchy in its own way. We have learned a lot from it. If you want to see, listen and enjoy everything, count on a good 2 hours before your visit, just this exhibition. We have not been able to do the museum visit of the abbey itself, due to time constraints, but we will definitely come back for this. Friendly welcome at the desk. (Original) Prachtige tentoonstelling momenteel: 'Heeren vertrekt'.

(Translated by Google) We only had a bite here after visiting 'world of Kina'. Very friendly people! Tasty separate drinks and snacks on the small menu (organic, local, fair trade!). I think the expo is very interesting, but after seeing a severed head, I decided not to visit with our five year old. Must be very cool for teenagers. For the little ones there is a quest with sheep 🐑 (Original) We hebben hier enkel een hapje gegeten na 'wereld van Kina' bezocht te hebben. Heel vriendelijke mensen!
