Achtersikkel
(Round
Tower),
Ghent,
Belgium
This
tall
round
tower
is
not
easy
to
find
because
it
is
located
in
the
courtyard
of
a
rich
house.
The
tower
is
indeed
round
at
the
base,
and
ends
with
an
octagonal
top
with
rectangular
windows.
It
was
built
from
light
sandstone
and
is
considered
one
of
the
most
ancient
buildings
in
Ghent,
dating
back
to
the
fifteenth
century.
The
name
of
the
tower
comes
from
the
surname
of
the
wealthy
owner
of
this
estate,
Sickelen.
Members
of
this
family
had
great
political
and
social
influence
and
authority
in
Ghent.
They
once
owned
all
the
buildings
in
this
courtyard.
There
is
a
legend
that
this
tower
was
built
by
one
of
the
rich
owners
of
the
house,
who
was
tired
of
people
and
decided
to
retire
to
this
tower.
He
could
look
at
the
city
and
everything
that
was
happening
from
the
tower,
and
not
have
any
contact
with
people
at
all.
The
last
owner
of
these
buildings
was
Elisabeth
Van
der
Sikkele.
Now
this
place
is
home
to
the
Ghent
Music
School,
and
if
you're
lucky,
you
can
hear
a
small
musical
concert
from
the
students
of
this
institution
-
through
the
open
windows.
You
can
sit
in
this
cozy
courtyard
and
relax
from
the
tourist
bustle.
Very
calm
and
cozy
place.
