The Begijnhof was where the beguines used to live. Beguines where woman that dedicated her life to do good, they were religious, but they where not a religious organization, so the church had not full controll over them like it was with nuns. Beguines originated in Belgium in the 12th century, and we can see Begijnhofs across Belgium and a few in the Netherlands. In Ghent it is currently a residential area with a nice church in the middle.

I like the atmosphere of the beginhof. It is so peaceful and so quiet there. Small humble houses full of history, separated from all the other world, small green park and nice church. Sometimes they have exhibitions in beginhof, then it is possible to visit chapek, church and many houses of beginhof. Love this place.

Begijnhof Ghent is undergoing renovation at the moment we visited. This is the largest begijnhof in Belgium. Worth a visit to experience the quietness in the Middle of Ghent, the charm of rhe courtyard surrounded by lovely architecture. Went into the church where we had great guide explaining history and plans of the begijnhof Gent. Truly great guide!

(Translated by Google) An oasis of peace and spirituality in the middle of a bustling city. Small and in need of some renovation, but oh so beautiful. (Original) Een oase van rust en spiritualiteit in het midden va een bruisende stad. Klein en nog aan wat renovatie toe, maar oh zo mooi.

This was actually a really nice surprise, the free audio guide really made the tour a lot more enjoyable. The castle itself is pretty sparse, in terms of decor and artifacts, there is one room with medieval weapons, guns and armors. There are also a few nice spots to get a view of the city.

A haven of quiet in bustling Ghent, this is sadly no longer a beguinage, but is now private housing. Something of the atmosphere of the cloister still remains, and the management ensures that visitors behave with respect. A double row of tiny houses surrounds a green lawn which was formerly the churchyard, and an elegant chapel forms the heart of the commune. The brickwork is kept pristine and reddened with oxblood to sustain the uniform appearance of the residences.

Such a beautiful and quite secretly hidden part of Ghent. Quite common in Belgium but every location has it's own style 👍

It's a beautiful space, and is a lovely, quiet place to walk. The church is a stunning sight, but is rarely open, so best not to expect a tour. Dog walkers abound. A great, relaxing place to visit when in Ghent!

Hidden historical monument, with simple but nice garden. Great genius loci.
