Simple honest-to-goodness home made western dishes in a house that features al-fresco dining with lush green plants all around you. That basically sums up Yaw's Roast & Grill. It's been a secret kept by local Penangites for many years, but now that the word is out, it's getting more and more crowded nowadays. Yaw's started life as Top Top Cafe in Pulau Tikus back in the 1970's. It was famous for its western dishes and also some local favourites back then. That tradition has been kept alive into the next generation but at their own residence in Midlands area. It's not easy to find the place, so Waze it. At first glance you'd be forgiven if you missed the place, but nowadays it's easier to find because there's a never ending flow of people standing outside the entrance. Seating is in the garden area, and you're surrounded by orchids, trees and plants. There are quite a few tables further away from the entrance, but I prefer the ones nearer to the entrance as they allow better elbow room. Some of the favourites here are the different chicken chops, either in Hainanese style or with black pepper sauce. There's a selection of fish dishes and steaks as well. One of the must try dishes is the chicken pot pie that's served in a cup with a big puff pastry on top. They offer ad-hoc breakfast specials as well including Nasi Lemak and Hainanese dishes every once in a while, so keep a lookout for it on their FB page. Prices are very reasonable and that's one of the reasons why the place is always packed. Parking may be an issue especially during peak dining hours, so come early (like maybe 6:00pm - no kidding).

Heard of Yaw's Roast and Grill for the longest time never had it till recently. Definitely should make a reservation or you will have to wait for 30min or more for walk in. The mix platter was a big portion but the glutton in our group took it down quickly and enjoy it a lot. The cordon bleu and three little pig was awesome as well, if I did not mention it's cordon bleu you might think it's fried sotong or something. The Root Beer float is really Instagramable for those who is seeking the likes etc.

Newly discovered a western style cuisine. Not easy to find its place, as no clear-cut signage. It was a home resident business model. Both hardcopy & QR code scanning website menu are available for food ordering. Try out the Ox-tail soup is special compare to others. It texture is thicker & the flesh was nicely braised. For steak lover, the choice of steak is great. Chicken mushroom soup with the pie taste will be covered by the ox-tail soup, if you order both the same time. Will need to pay a next trip to try out more variety. *Price at above average. *Limited/No Parking space.

Best western food in Penang. Residing in a house at a corner in the middle of a quiet housing area. Affordable priced food with enormous portion. A must try for first timers!

Good variety of choices Disappointed because ribeye steak was not available on both visits (second visit was on weekday 5.45pm and ribeye is already not available) Pork steak was amazing But the chicken mushroom pie was not served until after the main course was served…

The chicken pot pie best one I ever tasted. Reasonable price as well as great environment with lots of greenery..only down side is the time I went, it was raining and we were allocated to sit inside the house, which is quite stuffy and hot. Other than that, all good.

I found a hidden gem today. This cafe is a great place to go if you're looking for a taste of your childhood. The menu features all sorts of classic dishes, like chicken chops, fish and chips, and mushroom soup. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere is really cozy. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a taste of nostalgia.

this place existed since long ago. used to come here for nice Western food during teenage days. came here recently for the nice food, unfortunately the food taste has dropped tremendously. mushroom soup was watery n tasteless with clumps. chickens chop taste 😣 steak was average. i guess the chef must have chaged too.

Western Food place with a long history, situated within their house itself. You won't know it's there unless you are actively looking for it. Place will be VERY packed during weekends, so try to make reservations if possible. If not, then you will need to wait to be seated. Peak times during weekends are around 6 pm to 7:30 pm, so if you want to avoid the crowd, show up super early or super late. Weekdays are much better. Service is OK, depending on number of customers, the more packed it is, the more chaotic it gets, hence minor requests might get mixed up or ignored sometimes.

Best affordable Chinese style Western food on Penang Island. Located in corner house. Pork ribs are delicious and so is chicken mushroom soup pie. Cute drinks too.

Overall everything is good. I love their chicken mushroom pie. That is nice. Crispy and aromatic. The only thing that could be improved is the soup. Lacking some impact, maybe more heavy taste mushrooms to add more flavour to it. Chicken chop and fish and chips are average. The salad tasted funny.

Good dining experience and environment. Surrounded by plants, service was average but serving was fast. Must try their signature mushroom soup and chicken pie really crispy and well baked. Served immediately after freshly baked from oven. Garlic sauce was nice, lamb was a bit soft but overall nice and price was reasonable.

I went there to try out their chicken pie, couldn’t find it on their menu. So I ordered through the waiter. To my disappointment, the mushroom soup taste cheap and the portion is okay but not as big as main course meals (as expected). The real disappointment. It costs RM16 and I didn't expect that. (It was not stated and no where to be found on their menu) With that price, I would rather order their Chicken chop which is a main course meal size and the same price. I totally dont get the pricing. I thought the cashier charge me wrongly. So I double confirmed, and it is indeed RM16. The chicken pie is considered a side and it costs as much as the mains which boggles my mind.

I would say by far the best chicken chop I have ever had. The portion is perfect, the sauce is not overpowering, the veggies are fresh and the most important is the crust. The crust is cooked to perfection and it is also well-seasoned. The waiter is somehow quite friendly which I didn't expect at this place because it is kind of hard to find here by driving car to search for food. The atmosphere is okay but I would prefer that it would be brighter instead of dimmer. The price would be a little bit above average but I would say it is worth it! I will 100% visit the shop again and highly recommend it to everyone!

Everything was excellent, in my opinion. If I’m not mistaken, the Cheesy Chicken Chop had a more enjoyable taste compared to the Garlic Butter variant. Additionally, the Mushroom Chicken Pie remained hot even after I finished all my main dishes. Furthermore, the portion size was okay too.

A special place to having dinner, with all the plant in the garden surrounding you. Feel romantic as well, haha. But also have mosquitoes as the place a bit dark, you may bring insects repellent. Most of the foods are nice, is non-halal place. So can try the pork chop, very yummy. Beef also yummmm as my cousin share me one bite😆

I had high expectation for the breakfast as it was a recommendation but I was disappointed. Prices for the food are way too expensive for a neighbourhood small diner. I understand that prices for raw material are increasing but the food price should correlate to the small house compound with no air con. The Hainanese noodle (RM9) was bland and pale in comparison to any stall serving Hainan char/Hokkien char in kopitiam. The Hainan chicken chop taste (RM20) was lack of character as well. We weren’t sure if they’re trying to make brown sauce or mushroom sauce cos it tasted like neither. For both of this, you can find better ones in nearby kopitiam/Gurney Plaza food court. The nasi lemak taste was slightly better but if you ask me, do I wanna pay RM16 for the combo - 1 prawn, 1 small fish and 1 medium size chicken, no I wouldn’t. The reason being the place is not a full pledge restaurant. The place is freaking hot even with wall fan. Also the food taste is just ok. The chun piah taste and price (RM18) was justifiable because there were small prawn and some crab meat inside.

1st time here even though I have heard about how marvellous this place is. Upon reaching this restaurant, the immediate positive reaction was there are already a huge crowds patiently waiting their turn to dine in coz seating are very limited here (can't blame the owner coz the western delights are served right from their terraced home unit). Of course the verdict of the foods we randomly ordered matches the swelling crowds (even though it started drizzling). I ordered the chicken mushroom pie dip in the creamy soup together with Gordon Bleu & lamb shank. The pie & Gordon Bleu was absolutely ravishing but the lamb shank aromatic was slightly dull in taste. I suspected that probably it was due to high expectation from the first two dishes that sort of dampen the expectation. Nevertheless, the food was top notch with very affordable pricing. Definitely will make few more trips to savour the remaining dishes on menu.

Everything we ordered was delicious! Oxtail soup, chicken mushroom soup, lamb shank (huge portion), and chicken chop. The chicken mushroom soup was extra special, the melty cheese of the buttery pastry mixed with the soup inside was a great combo. The garlic bread stands out too, as it’s soft and a little sweet without being too garlicky. Ventilation isn’t the best, as you’re bound to smell like grease after dining here. However, food is good so we might be back to try their ribs/steak next time. 😋

Visit after many years. Taste still maintain in good and environment has been change eg no more mosquito. Ordered 1/2 BBQ pork ribs and prime cut rib eye steak. 1/2 of BBQ pork portion can be share by 2 pax. Medium rare is recommence for eye steak, more elastic. Overall good taste and romance’s environment.

Its a roast and grill house, we came here dinner time on weekend, very crowded, surprisingly... service is super fast, we had a pork sphagetti meatball, meatball is very good, sauce is good too, but the pasta is over cook in my opinion, grilled pork chop slightly over cook, sauce is good, the outdoor need more lightning , price is very affordable , I would consider going back here on a workday, definitely not on weekend

👍 Queue seemed quite long when we arrived around 2.30 pm but we only waited about 20 minutes. I think they should have more signage to tell customers what to do so the process can be easier. There was only one waiter upstairs in the seating area so it was quite difficult to get his attention. Food is...
