Great location for visiting George Town. Parking available at the back of the hotel. Bed was good quality. Very nice place for those we like to wake up early, thanks to the nearby minaret. Shower in bathroom and bad are fitted for people who don't mind cold showers, for warm, take your time. We stayed five nights, used glasses were not cleaned once. The security guard was the only one who provided us with correct info about the area. If you like surprises you are in the right place , when leaving we were greeted by a small snake in the elevator.

Pros: location is really good, and hotel staff are all helpful. Cons: very noisy street. We were given the room with a small balcony but the doors and windows are not sound proofed. The water stopper in bathtub is spoilt and I had to use the back of a toothbrush to remove it to drain the water. Breakfast was very very basic with bento style set meal that wasn't even suitable for my 8YO kid. I paid for 3 nights but left after the first. Hotel refused to refund me the remaining 2 nights but my sanity is worth more so this review to warn you of my experience.

Recently had a conference trip down to lovely Penang. This hotel was right next to Chulia street and in front of Cititel. Fantastic location. The rooms were spacious and clean with the usual amenities. Bathroom had a bath tub and running hot water which was great at the end of the day. Staff were friendly and helpful. there's a sky lounge/bar but it was not open when I was there. There was breakfast provided with my stay. It's usually a choice between 2 options. My only gripe is that the choice must be premade otherwise they give whatever is left, and that you have to tell the staff the day before. Also although mentioned they start breakfast at 7, they actually only were ready after 8. But it was still a decent meal. Would stay again.

Very noisy. Very dark room. The time i went there, got no water for few hours. I couldn’t shower, poop or pee. What the hell? The pipe for shower also broken. Can only use pipe for bath tub ugh. Worst experience ever πŸ‘ŽπŸ»

One of my top choices to stay at whenever I go back to Penang and am planning to spend most of trip in and about Georgetown. The staff is pleasant and helpful. Didn’t have towels in my room, but nothing a call to the front desk won’t solve. Got a room on the 4th floor facing the street, a bit of noise at night, but not too loud to disturb my sleep. Limited first come first served parking lot at the back of the hotel. But I haven’t had issues on previous trips driving down. Bus stop is a few meters away, where you can board the free CAT bus that takes you around the city area. Plenty of good food just a short walk away.

Location, staff and breakfast are nice. But the shower need more than 30 minutes to be hot. What's even funny I used kettle to have hot water for bath. Hygiene was average. Should at least provide a cheap slippers for the customers

The room is spacious, clean and tidy. Enough space for Muslims to perform salah. Bathroom is equipped with all necessities - toiletries and towels. This hotel has bathtub in the bathroom, the only one of its kind for cheap and affordable hotel. Staff at reception desk is friendly and deliver his service professionally and efficiently. The hotel is located near to the capital of Georgetown, easy access to business premises and restaurants

My Experience is not good , one night I paid almost 221 RM . The Breakfast was not good very very little quantity . In this price is Penang I get a very good hotel and good Bfst. I used too to stay here before Bfst was good service is nice , even I request for one extra bedsheet I didn't get and the staff said I need to pay money .

Location good in town. First come first serve for the car park. If full then need to park opposite car park which is charge RM30 for overnight. Who book this hotel is not recommended to book with their buffet breakfast. Thats not buffet breakfast but ala cart breakfast. No choices and only nasi lemak with 4pcs watermelon and 1 small cup apple juice. The buffet only their toast bread and coffee tea. The room with bathtub. My kids enjoy it. Rooms maintenance not good few part spoiled. Overall clean and still acceptable.

This place was a saver for my family. Special thanks to Mr.Siva the receptionist. We had a bad experience earlier before we actually got this place. Our 2 homestay got cancelled and we was trying our best to get a stay but unfortunately all the hotels was fully booked. And I was happened to walk by this hotel and ask if there is a room available. Told Mr.Siva my situation and he just said okay I will take the risk and give you room to stay as we have a 3 months old infant and 4 years old toddler. Thank you so much Mr.Siva. Really appreciate it. God bless you always

We were given a twin room with a sea Yew which was great. The road in front was quiet as it's the quiet part of the main Penang Road. However, there was a night karaoke next door that can be heard easily even in our 10th floor room. It went on into around 11pm or so. Then I think it's the aircon condenser or something that's going on all night. Every few minutes it will hum like a washing machine. Rooms are kind of dated but OK. When you shower, you'll probably wet the floors but they dry up quite fast.

Room is spacious and bed comfortable. Shower pressure and bathtub are good. But whole bathroom floor gets wet so dangerous when going out of the tub. Room musty maybe no guests for a long time. It's okay for smokers but if you want no smoking, I wouldn't recommend. The kettle had old water that was already mouldy inside. There were small ants on the bedside table so got bit at night. Had a zoom meeting but the WiFi was not strong enough. Had to use my own data.

I am not sure why people say everyone is so friendly here. My friend had to take a phone call in the hallway (I was sleeping so she left the room) to be respectful. There was a point during it that she started crying (quietly) and was asked to go back to her room because she was crying and disturbing other people. This would never fly in Canada it Western countries and we were appalled. Three people asked her to leave the hall because β€œshe was crying” so she went downstairs to the lobby where she got glares from the staff. Even if public emotions are not accepted in Malaysia, I feel this hotel should learn how to deal with Westerners and not be so rude! I am Appalled! Aside from this, we booked the room because it had a bathtub, which wouldn’t plug, we were kept up all night one of the nights because of the call to prayer and a massive party outside. The breakfast is definitely not great and we were billed $86 more than what we were told after more fees. It started at $100 for three nights and ended at $186 CDN. Beware. The upside was that the beds were comfortable so that was nice.

Friendly staff, The room is great, but hygine is not good. 1. Bath towel need to change, a bit smelly and also small. 2. Please clean the dirt around sink and the bathtub as well. 3. The pressure of water also didnt work. 4. Aircond got problem, for the first time i sleep over night in the hotel, without using any blanket! πŸ₯΄ So far 3/5 Positive 1. Friendy staff. 2. Location of the hotel. 3. Great breakfast, clean, service was too good, staff here so good. Love it Thankyou! 😊

Service was ok. Room was average but my room' s phone was broken and the lights above the bathroom sink didn't work. I informed the reception but no action was taken. The worst was the breakfast. It only starts at 8 am and there isn't any buffet spread, meaning we only are what is being served to us. Overall I am not coming back to stay here when I visit Penang in the future.

Room was nice and cosy with a bonus balcony. The only thing that needs to be improved is the pillows, too soft and thin. Hot shower needs a little time to heat up but everything else is A OK.

β€’ Aircond was not cold. We request for room changes but still have the same problem. β€’ The water heater in the bathroom was not functioning well. Takes time to hot. β€’ small bath towel. Hence, 2star for them.

Minimum for this place. One room has not windows, very dark. Service limited. Continental breakfast with less choice. No option for lunch or dinner.

location are really strategic. All famous place only walking distance like roti canai transfer road, ais tingkap, komtar, nasi kandar places, sup hameed and many more. The rate for one night very reasonable.

The room I was staying was at the corner which is facing the roads. The noise from the nearby pub was unbearable from sunset until it stop the next morning at 6:30am. Guess what? My eyes were blinking the whole night without any sleep from the din. Choose a room in the middle without window if u intend to stay in this hotel for its location to avoid the noise.

Great location, and rather clean and well maintained despite the age of the hotel. The pillows are too soft, though, and the walls are too thin, so if you are a light sleeper, this is not the place for you, as you'll be hearing noises from neighbors.

Overall a nice place to stay. I have no problem. But if I want to complain, it would be the morning breakfast. Too simple for the room pricess we pay. I had better before. They need to have more choices and in better quality. Other than that, I recommended this hotel.

Surprisingly a good hotel for several days stay. It does not look likr much from outside but I think it was renovated recently and looks great inside. Room check in and out is very easy and the staff is great in terms of friendliness and helpfulness. Breakfast is decent enough and they have some variety from day to day which is okay I guess. Provided free Sun newspaper at the lobby daily. The rooms are nice and clean. Water pressure is also good though you'd have to wait for a while before the hot water comes on. The hotel is in the midst of upgrading and seems that there will be a gym soon. The location is excellent as there are many shops around with a huge indoor hawker center just behind the hotel which opens until quite late. Only issue with this hotel is that it has very limited parking. If it is full, you have to park outside or in a private car park adjacent to the hotel. Highly recommended.

It's crazy never come across any hotel says that you have to wait for 30 minutes for the water to get heatup for you to have a shower..And when we asked for the maintenance to check the answer that was given by the front office ..the maintenance guy is on leave. Called the front office from the room phone would never want to answer but when called the front office from the mobile phone to the hotel direct line there's someone to answer your call. Wake-up please

Expect an old hotel with an old room. That being said, I quite enjoyed my stay in their Deluxe King room. Reliable wi-fi connection and the room got a bathtub. It's quite rare to get a room with a bathtub with the price I paid, so it's a great thing. Because it's always nice to soak in a hot bath after walking around Penang. Good location to get around Georgetown as well. Other than that, the experience was average. p.s. Remember to prepare RM100 cash for deposit.

  • 5/5 Aidaa R. 2 years ago on Google
Check in was a breeze, the lobby is rather small BUT good stuff sometimes came in small. The room is spacious, but the bathroom is a bit seasoned. It is next to main road so expect some honking here and there plus the bath area needs a lil bit of scrubbing. But overall, it is a good place for a budget stay or staycation while in Georgetown. For foodies, you'll love it even more!

Good customer service. Room quite spacey & got bathtub, being in center of attraction price consider low rate. Breakfast not buffet, served as set with side dishes. Satisfied.

Room had funghi (as most hotels). Water in the shower took 10 minutes to warm up or doesn't warm up at all. Lots of noises from outside (Islamic prayers 3x a day), night life and car noises. Airco was alright, room itself smelled a bit musky and dusty, since the windows wouldn't/can't open. Service was really good. Polite people. Prices are cheap imo. There is a (somewhat shady) sky view on the 11th floor. It's a great view at night and you can smoke there. The location is good as well, since most sightseeing locations are on a walking distance. If you gonna stay here, I recommend to see the "new world" food court where you have lots of food stalls.

Enjoyed 3 nights staying here. Welcome by friendly staff upon check in, check in was smooth and our room was clean. Good stay. Parking was limited so what we do to secure a parking was walk or grab when we would like to go out in the evening. Parking could be packed during weekend but for weekday it was okay. Overall satisfied πŸ‘

The room and bathroom needs updating, no satellite TV , no hot water for a shower , and the bath towels need replacing, thin and very off white . But on the positive , great location , and friendly helpful staff

  • 3/5 Azhar A. 1 year ago on Google
Rooms are ok, not too small. Stayed on 9th floor facing Batu Feringghi seaside. Karaoke next door very irritating and went on until around midnight. Didn't take the room package with breakfast included, so breakfast was RM38 per person extra. It's not buffet and looking at the menu, it's not worth the money. Better to go out to the many restaurants and cafes around the area. It's a great location, very near to scenic places in Georgetown. Complaints are the very thin and dirty looking bath towels and old & dirty bedsheets. TV has just a few channels, but hey you're in Penang...go out and explore! Overall a comfortable hotel for the price.

Stayed 2 nites over 2023β€”2024. Peak times, many hotels full, short staffed, poor n slow service all round BUT it was a breeze at Merchant’s Hotel!! No lines at check in, service with a smile, clean rooms, new towels, all amenities n hot water available, cold air conditioning n wen asked for extra water n pillows, got it in 5 minutes. Yes it is a old aged hotel n rooms r basic but compared to the other hotels around its very affordable n value for money. Of course location location location too. Will definitely return since I was looking for a comfortable, clean n safe place to sleep.
