!!!Could be a good hotel BUT!!! Looks beautiful if you come in and also the interior seems nice BUT our room was not clean (hair and dirt in the bed and room). Wifi didn’t work properly and stuff on day one didn’t really want to help us. On day three other stuff provided us with different wifi. Worst thing we had MANY COCKROACHES (really big ones) in our bathroom and room. Instead of coming up with the idea to move us to another room we had to ask for it. Stuff wasn’t helpful and proactive. Also I expected a „sorry“ or a discount but we didn’t get anything besides a smaller room for the last 2 nights… Management seems to only show the beauty of the hotel and reviews instead of maintaining and caring about current customers.

We just had one night stay here at Spices Hotel. The price is slightly on the higher side considering the room space is quite limited. However the ambiance takes away other flaws. The shower was awesome as the water pressure was excellent. Nice couches to relax too along the landing area. The hotel interior makes the stay worthwhile. Since I am a Muslim, the sound of prayers from the mosque nearby is a plus for me. The parking lot is limited.

The location of Spices hotel is great in the middle of old Georgetown. I like the atmosphere they create and it is almost like staying in someone's home but in a good sense. The style of the rooms is good as well especially the loft we had on our second night. The first night we stayed in two separate rooms in a separate building. The only thing which is a bit inconvenient (but ok for me) is that there is a pretty steep stair that you have to go up to get to your room. With a bunch of suitcases, it is slightly uncomfortable. But then, what do you expect in the middle of town. Our second stay and I will go here again next time!

The room is clean and cozy but abit small. The location is good. The cons are: 1) our room is above one Japanese bbq restaurant and the food smell and smoke will go in to the room 2) the hotel is just beside a mosque. In early morning (5am) there would be prayers and it’s really loud.

Decent hotel with nice decoration (has a moroccan feel to it) but because it is located right next to a mosque, i haven't been able to sleep well with the mosque blaring it's speakers to full blast at 5am!

Was more like a hostel than a hotel. Very shabby room, which can be forgiven if it wasn’t for the fact it was very dirty. Shower head full of mould, bedding didn’t look or smell clean and the pillows were yellow from sweat and stank. Dirty wet towel left in shower, and the toilet bin was full of used tissues (which I spoke to reception about and they didn’t even apologise, or rectify). No room servicing so we had to use same towels every day, and there’s nowhere to hang them up to dry. Beware you’ll also be woken at 5am by the call to prayer from the nearby mosque as soundproofing is non-existent.

Don't stay here if you value sleep. There's a mosque right next door that amplifies prayer through speakers before sunrise (6am) every morning. It's as if they're in the room with you. Our room was in a separate building beside the hotel, we had a room-key but we weren't given key access to the building so we had to ask reception to let us in each time. The room was small and directly outside the door was an indoor balcony right above a Japanese restaurant that finished up at around 11:30pm each evening. Pros are short walking distance to George Town, a local mosque and a Japanese restaurant.

Pro: everything pretty much within walking distance Con: you hear the restaurant on the ground floor as well as the mosque every now and then - not ideal for light sleepers

Good location. But absolutely abysmal service. Staff didn't have a clue what was going on. Could barely communicate. Probably the worst service I've ever received at a hotel. Rooms were acceptable but not amazing.

A lot of on the ground, loud mosque prayers next door, bad sound proof of the property. You can hear piping noises all night. So bad, my parents have to leave after one night. If you wish for a peaceful stay, don't stay here.

Beautiful boutique hotel. Comfortabele rooms and friendly staff. Very close to the old city centre, most things can be visited on foot. Just one down side, very close to the mosque and the morning prayers. If you bring earplugs you should be fine.

*just a disclaimer the following review is not a reflection on the service staff or targeted at any individual. I know there are things beyond their control in regards to the surrounding environment of the premises Pros: walking distance to many attractions, lots of stray cats (if that's your thing), staff was friendly, approachable and helpful. Cosy rooms, nice wood accents and heritage style decor Bed is comfortable, shower is a good temperature and pressure. Room was clean and the fan setting and air con settings were nice and cool. Cons: Not for light sleepers at all. I cannot stress this enough. Knowing that it is in the heart of Georgetown, the odd motorbike noises and uncles talking are not a problem at all. So general noise level was obviously expected. However, there is a printing press (which we didn't know at the time of booking) directly across the room that operates all night resulting in a loud pump/buzzing sound that doesn't stop. When we went down to the desk at 2 am to ask what the noise was staff said it was a printing press across the street so we asked for earplugs which they don't have and she told us that the 7/11 in Penang are not 24 hours. I have since read other people's review with the same complaint and if the hotel has received this feedback previously I would have expected them to at least provide complimentary earplugs. This hotel is also located next to a mosque so expect loud morning prayers at 5 am. No private parking with the hotel. Upon checking in they ask for your car registration which we assumed meant the parking is handled by the hotel. Nope. And did she tell us that we must pay for street parking? Nope. And did we get a fine for parking there? Yep. I'm not saying don't stay here at all, this is more of a cautionary tale to come prepared when staying here and read reviews first.

We stayed in the loft room as were 2 adults and 1 kid. Room was spacious. The receptionists were excellent and pleasing. Drinking water filter is available in the lobby for extra water. Walkable distance to restaurants in Little India, Chulia street and Armenia street. Since it's a heritage hotel , steep stairs are there to the rooms. We had to carry the luggage ourselves which was fine with us. But might not be suitable for people with knee pain.

The room is not as it advertised in Agoda or booking.com. the bedhead is the wall with brownish stain. Blood stain on the cover sheet and the wall near your bed. Every 30minutes noise like high pressure water flushing/air pump (I don't know what is it) it's continues till late at at 3am or so.. they put a wooden swing just outside of the room make it a spot for people to hangout even at late night. When I asked for switch room to more quite that facing the garden, they refused saying that room is booked but since I I do my work in the hotel room for 2 days..I didn't see anyone in or out from the room I requested.

The room is totally different story with what shown in agoda or booking.com. What I booked was a superior room with balcony, but in the end what I get was only a standard room, no balcony, small windrow, and surrounded by noise. I try to ask and request them to change for me, but the receptionist just told me both superior and standard are same and if I stay for more days thn they can help me change to room with balcony and garden (I was like what ???) :D . Well, I couldn’t request for more with a room in 150myr, but definitely no next time. Thank you Spices Hotel.

Horrible. Stayed here before and the service was alright. Nobody opened the door for us for a good 20 minutes with our luggage and when they opened the door for us no policy whatsoever. And when we were going to check in nobody, absolutely no one was at the counter to check in we waited a good 40 minutes to check in. The very least they could have done was leave a note so atleast guests would know. When they finally arrived the apology was half hearted and the credit card terminal was not working. Overall a very extremely disappointing experience.

A beautiful hotel with wonderful room that was perfect for us. The smell of spices alone on entering the hotel made it a treat. Nas greeted us with her endearing manner & helped us in every way so that our stay was absolutely perfect : )

I would disregard the very negative reviews. This is a small boutique hotel in a very beautiful neighborhood. The front desk is very nice and helpful. I imagine if someone had an issue, they were probably the ones being difficult. Check in time is 3pm, it’s a little presumptuous to believe that they can and must allow earlier check in. The room is just the right size. It’s clean, and bright with beautiful windows. There is some loud sounds from the mosque right next-door that happen a few times a day, but there can be something very beautiful about just enjoying it. This hotel greatly exceeds expectations considering the cost. I’d definitely recommend this hotel.

Avoid this place at all costs, There is a huge problem with their front desk! We couldn’t check-in because of the receptionist aggressive and rude behavior. When we asked her to contact the manager in order to solve the issue, the receptionist refused and started shouting and slamming the table! She just did not care! Worst experience I have ever experienced.

Firstly had to pay 24 ringits tax for the room, then found a huge dead bug under my pillow, went straight to manageress who did not apologise. Second night there was a loud party of Chinese people keeping us awake until 2am, again complained to the same woman who simply did not care. Room was very dirty but apparently delux!

I was in the family suite that sleeps 3. Some parts of the room needed maintenance as wall cracking observed. Doesn't affect me but it will look more presentable. The service is also good.. if you want to have a cup of tea or coffee but don't want to drink alone, go to the mini bar in front of the reception while enjoy an array of books and magazine they have to offer. We bought lots of tao sah piah & their staffs was so kind to offer a carton for us to pack. The only drawback is really the room or the entire building is just right behind masjid jamek. So if you are used to hearing prayers 5 times a day, then it will not be a problem. In fact is exceptionally short distance to many places like street art, those temples, coffee shops and the super tasty nice night food kimberly street.. all within walking distance.

Quaint hotel situated in the midst of Georgetown. Note that it's split into 2 buildings AND situated next a mosque. Wouldn't recommend for light or early sleepers as prayers do start at 6ish. Couple of escooter, bicycle rental shops around for ease of getting around.

  • 2/5 Mangowearsgreenpants 1 year ago on Google
Pro: Good location Cons: 1)Right across from a mosque. Loud prayer at around 6am and nighttime. 2) Obstructed window view. Entire windows are facing a concrete wall. 3) Japanese restaurant is downstairs. You can smell grease every night.

My 2nd time in Penang stayed in a boutique hotel. We Cooling stylish lobby, very comfy to relax during hot day. Free coffee, tea & water is a + point. My room is soho type, not suitable if u r traveling with kids & seniors. The stairs are really steep. Balcony is spacious & relaxing, facing a park (could be muslim cemetery?). U can do ur laundry & hv ur meal. If u r driving, there are ~10 lots on first come first serve basis. Walking further down the street u can come to street art. Beside lobby, U can also access rooms via backyard. Backyard is airy & peaceful. Up the stairs u are welcome by another lobby. Personally i felt there are 2 areas of improvement. dust & spider web are visible in room. Toilet has water leaking, showering pressure is weak, obviously nd maintenance although is not disturbing. If these 2 areas are taken care, is 5***** .

The young Malay Man Receiption Hypocrisy. My friends and colleagues complaint that Dan is working as the Receiption on night shift , unfortunately he always sleep in the middle of the nights and laziness and he is a new trainer why he don't responsible to care the guests who has problems . He no have the rights to kick out the guest named Chris Ngan who has problem need his help . Otherwise, he don't have the rights to sleep in lobby or in the back of the lobby that regarding his hotel ? I had report and post on social media about this and the Receiption to the world. I was shockingly reading he has the rights to kick out the guest from lobby ?! I am very pity him is a not professional job , don't the rights to kick out another new guest. In a short , I hopefully that he will match other jobs except reception.

You feel like home as soon as you step into this place. There is no more to say. Very warm and friendly staff. A place where you can get your laundry done. We definately would like to come back next time.

There is a huge problem with the staff! The worst receptionist ever! I couldn’t check-in because of the aggressiveness. I decided to leave and ask for refund. They refused to let me talk to manager. They refused to collaborate. I never have seen such hotel experience in my life!! This mad!

Beautiful hotel, friendly receptionist but I personally think it is not suitable for family with small kids. Our room comes with a loft and the staircase kinda steep..same with the one leading to our floor (1st floor). Aircond was already switched on when we came in, there's no minibar though. So, don't buy food/drinks that req to be refrigerated.

Very comfortable experience. We stayed in the family loft which was huge for the 3 of us. The location is central to all the food and cultural experiences that Georgetown has to offer. We used Grab to go anywhere outside walking distance. The staff was friendly. The downstairs lobby is very relaxing with its huge sofa swing. Definitely recommend.

Great location. Very nice heritage hotel. It's located in a lane so it's quiet. Very clean as well, as we need to take off our shoes inside the hotel. There's convenient store and sharing bike within walking distance.

This hotel has great character and is good value. Breakfast was excellent. The only area of improvement would be better air conditioning, but to be fair, my room had a very high ceiling so it makes sense that it was tough to cool.

Great location but unfortunalty we had a leak from the ceiling in our room and the hotel did nothing about it when we told them - so we had to put towels everywhere on the floor not to have all our stuff wet. The staff wasn't very helpful nor particularly nice. As well, get ready to be woken up by the mosque at 5am - it is basically next door :)

Nobody was at the counter during check in. Their excuse was that they went to grab a key in the other building, which shouldn't take half an hour. Their credit card terminal was also broken, and the sink drains very poorly. Apology was very half hearted.

We booked via Agoda. The rooms were clean, very comfortable. The location is almost at the center of Georgetown. The hotel itself is highly recommended. The staffs are not as accommodating though. Also it was not possible to check in earlier. But overall I had a wonderful experience at Spices Hotel.

We arrived late afternoon and checked into SPICES HOTEL which is a slightly off the main road, however the location for me is great as by night- its very quiet than other streets. Easy walking distance to other interesting tourist spots. Place is filled with greenary inside and outside. I love how the rooms nicely done and very comfortable. Masjid Acheh (one of the oldest mosque in Penang) is located just behind the hotel so easy to pray for muslims. I really enjoy the vibe around this hotel and there is a bike shop a few metres away you can rent electric scooters and also a gelato shop just beside (behind facing Lebuh Acheh) the hotel. Highly recommended!

Very nice hotel with very good location - right in the centre of heritage cite. The rooms are renovated, have good amenities. The only cons of stay was absence of fridge in both rooms we stayed. Otherwise, everything is just great, and the staff is really friendly and helpful.

Stay away of this hotel! Don’t fail for the nice pictures since a lot of struggle you will face during your stay. Terrible late check-in and they are asking for extra money to let you in if you arrive before 3pm. The management is not responsive and they have the attitude that “we are elite boutique hotel and don’t care”. the receptionist is another story. So aggressive person and out of control and you have to avoid her if you are tired and had long trip. While the interior is nice, the rooms are tiny. The place is noisyy!
