This is an iconic mosque of Indian Muslim Community in Penang. As a Muslim from Indonesia, I am truly amazed by it's mixed architecture. It's tourist-friendly, I mean for everyone (from different religions/beliefs) who wants to enter, they are politely permitted to enter the mosque by obeying several religious rules, e.g. slip off the shoes/sandals and wearing appropriate clothes before entering. When I visited Georgetown, I always do a prayer here. It's absolutely relaxing. I promise I'd like to visit this place next time. See you, Kapitan Keling Mosque! :)

The Captain Keling Mosque (Kapitan Kling Masjid) is one of the largest mosques in George Town. We were offered a free guided tour there (no tickets to enter the mosque). You can then learn about the mosque and the basics of the Muslim religion. I found this very interesting. I think it's worth seeing this place if you visit this area.

A prominent old mosque in George Town. Used to be the main principal mosque of George Town before the State Mosque took over the function in the 80's. With its distinctive classical Mughal architecture, Masjid Kapitan Keling is one of the most recognizable and picturesque landmark in the old part of the George Town City. The surrounding is nice, calm and peaceful. The amenities are also well-maintained and clean. Tourists even the non-Muslims are welcomed to visit this mosque during off-prayer times. Tour guides and robes are provided here for the tourists. The entrance is free for everyone. Even though the main prayer hall with the carpets are only for the Muslim worshippers, but the non-Muslims can still explore the mosque from the wings of the prayer hall and its surroundings. It's nice seeing quite a lot of visitors from various countries during my visit to pray here.

"Kapitan Keling Mosque, located in the heart of George Town, Pulau Pinang, is an architectural marvel and a symbol of the city's rich cultural diversity. Built in the 19th century, the mosque stands as a testament to the Islamic heritage of the region. The mosque's architecture is a beautiful blend of Moorish and Mughal styles. The white facade, punctuated by yellow domes and towering minarets, creates a striking contrast against the blue Penang sky. The intricate designs and patterns adorning the interior are a visual treat, reflecting the artistry of the craftsmen. The mosque is not just a place of worship, but also a community center where locals and visitors alike can learn about Islam and its teachings. The mosque's staff are welcoming and informative, eager to share the mosque's history and significance. The serene atmosphere within the mosque offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city outside. The well-maintained courtyard, with its lush greenery and flowing fountains, adds to the tranquility of the place. In conclusion, a visit to the Kapitan Keling Mosque offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and spirituality. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the cultural tapestry of George Town, Pulau Pinang."

wandered here as part of our heritage walk at around 11am, we somehow got in and only found out later that the place was open till noon for prayers, so keep that in mind when planning your visit. the courtyard is beautiful, with flowers adorning the paths and great walls of white rising to form the mosque and its surrounding buildings. we didn’t go into mosque, but it appeared to be well-taken care of.

Lovely Mosque. An enthusiastic man greeted me, showed me round and explained the principles of Islam to me, as well as giving me some information leaflets. I think he was trying to convert me, he talked for a good 20 minutes. It's all meant in a good way though and I respect his beliefs, but maybe just a little overbearing at times. It's free to visit, they will give you a robe if you're wearing shorts. I gave a small donation.

It was very peaceful and beautiful in the early morning. The gate was closed, but a caretaker of the mosque allowed us into the courtyard, not inside the building. Right next to the mosque gate, there was a public bike station (LinkBike), where you could rent a bike at a reasonable price through the LinkBike app, to explore nearby attractions. To visit inside the building, you need to dress modestly like a Muslim, with a headscarf and clothing covering your arms and legs. They would loan coats if needed. I saw a water pool in front, where the Muslims were washing their faces and feet before entering inside. It was a religious ritual. Visiting hours: 13:00 - 17:00 (Sat-Thu) 15:00 - 17:00 (Fri) Free entrance ---- 𝟏𝐌𝐚𝐩𝟏𝐃𝐚𝐲 | My Self-Guided Tour

A beautiful and a very old mosque that is part of the UNESCO Heritage site. Kapitan Keling Mosque had just celebrated her 205 years in history. Clean and well maintained. What is intereting and unique again is, the mosque is located at Buckingham Street!!! Glad that the State Govt has maintained the street name, bearing the colonial past and it is part of history.

Another place of worship that I wish I can enter but due to the current pandemic, it was still closed to visitors last year when I visited the island. Still, I am glad I managed to take some good pics from the exterior. It will still be here when I return (hopefully sooner than I expect).

This is one of the most beautiful and old mosques I have seen in a while. I was walking down the streets of Penang when I had a first look. I prayed two prayers there, Maghrib and Isha. Imam's recitation was so beautiful and calming that you could listen to it a whole day. It also has a great historic value attached to it. You can find the details on a board just outside the mosque. I would really recommend folks to visit this as it has calming effects on your mind, regardless of your religion.

That was quite impressed to visit this mosque. Not because of an specific architecture but because it is the oldest mosque of Georgetown. It just celebrated 200 years in 2021. It's very beautiful from inside and outside. I was lucky enough to have Jummah prayer there. When I was there , it was at 2 pm, I would recommend to get there at least 30 minutes earlier, so that you can get a space. It fills up very quickly. Here, women have a separate building, so they can join Jummah prayer without any challenges.

Nice!! She showed me inside and gave me detailed explanation. It was wonderful! They have a pamphlet written by various languages. It’s free so try to come!

Impressive mosque 🕌 in the heart of Georgetown. The minaret is a focal point in the town. The lawns are dotted with period cannons and select visiting times so make sure you plan your visit accordingly.

The name of mosque was taken from the Kapitan Kelings, the person who was appointed leaders of the South Indian community by the British. The whitewashed mosque is topped with large golden-yellow Mughal-style domes, crescents and stars and features a single, typical Indian-Islamic minaret from which the sound of the prayer can be heard. A long walkway leads up to the main prayer hall of Kapitan Keling Mosque, with graceful arches sweeping along its outer passageway. Inside the mosque there are lofty, celestial-white Gothic, Moorish and Roman arches creating an illusion of even more depth to the already-spacious prayer hall; check out the sparkling chandelier that hangs above. The walls are covered with calligraphy panels and stained glass windows featuring arabesques of geometrical designs and floral motifs. The floor is solid, polished white marble with long rows of prayer rugs strewn all over. Visitors are only allowed to enter if they are properly attired.

Free entry. Recommended during off praying time. On friday, entry for tourist is not allowed between 12.00pm until 3.00pm. Look for the guard wearing white and red uniform or any of the mosque commitee members usually wearing white thobe around the mosque to ask for information on the mosque and more.

Such a beautiful Mosque! I personally liked that there was a guy who introduced me what Muslim is, as I have little knowledge of it. I appreciate that they give their time to me to explain about the religion so I can know about it. They also have an information room with many books and pamphlets you can take freely.

Visitors do not seem to be welcome. We asked whether it is OK to visit and were indicated to enter from the side, as the entrance is there; not facing the street... However, we were asked to leave as soon as we got inside. Not entirely sure what was the reason... Anyways, quite impressive from the outside. Wasn’t too sure what to expect inside: it’s a large prayer room with pillars / columns with a fairly simple architecture around the central dome.

Well-preserved centuries old Indian Kapitan Mosque. Visitors seems not really being warmly welcome even the Muslims. However, the stunning architecture is impressive outside. The prayer hall is spacious. There are numerous trishaw around the corner of the mosque for sightseeing around the heritage sites.

We passed this mosque many of times when we are walking around Georgetown and finally have the opportunity to join the friday praying.. There are 2 pools and 2 wudlu area on the both side, of the mosque. The toilet is quite clean and is located on the right side (from the main gate). The mosque is cool, and clean. There is a carpet as a mat for praying but your head to be placed in the floor above the mat (for me it is kind of unique). They sell water for RM1 but also provide a water dispenser if i'm not mistaken. And you can find some cute rabbits in the garden if you are lucky..

(Been here 26/27 April 2023) Close to the Guesthouse i slept, morning adzan prayer came 2 times: 1 hour before morning prayer (i think it's a call for tahajud prayer), and at morning prayer (dawn). My first time at Penang, so the timezone is a bit confusing. Inside, it is a bit large, you can take wudlu at the small pool with a scoop. There's a carpet for prayer, but cut at the area for sujjud (so your head touches the floor when doing sujjud). Nice mosque in the middle of Old Town.

This mosque is one of the oldest in Penang and is part mosque, part Islamic and cultural centre. Architecturally, the building is mostly Malay influenced, there are minarets and domes, but so that you’d know it actually is a mosque. As a building I thought that it wasn’t all that interesting, but if you’re looking for information then this is one good place for it.
