This is my 3rd time to Ivy's and the quality is absolutely top notch (& very consistent). The boss is friendly as usual and we ordered the set for 2 with assam seabass, fried chicken, jiu hu char, and otak-otak. The kapitan chicken & sambal haebee is also really good if you decide to choose those. Food is delicious and served out all at once. It's always an enjoyable time at Ivy's; I definitely recommend people to try it at least once when they're in Penang.

This is a very homey Nyonya restaurant that not only serve yummy Nyonya home cook style food but the owner put extra effort to provide best service and give great recommendation. My fav is the ngor hiang fried spring roll and black soy souce chicken. The lemon juice is very thirst-quenching. We will definitely return next time.

This place do get crowded so recommended that you make a booking. Food is quite authentic and menu is quite extensive although they do already have a set menu for 2 or 3 or 4 pax. Personally I love their Assam fish and otak otak. Their drinks and dessert are minimum sweetness

Scrumptious home cooked authentic Northern straits settlement Chinese dishes. The Peranakan dishes here are good quality food made with freshly made spices paste ( non of those store bought or prepacked spice paste). We were here during 5th day of Chinese New Year and they were having the CNY set. My money is on the Stir Fried Morning Glory with Shrimp Chilli Paste ( aka Kangkung Belacan) as the Sambal belacan is so fresh that you can taste the freshly pounded chilli. I also particularly love the Tamarind Fish ( aka Assam Fish). The 5 spiced Meat roll ( aka Ngor Hiang) is not bad as well but it’s not the best I’ve tasted.

The restaurant is clean with both indoor and outdoor seating. Service although polite is slow. If you have a big group the place is a little too cramp for comfort. Because it is a pork free restaurant those Nyonya dishes that originally uses pork as in their ingredients tasted awful, your Peranakan grandmother would turn in her grave. It would be better if the serve only dishes that does not require pork in the recipe. For example their Fish Otah and Kapitan Curry Chicken was good but the Hee Piow soup ( they use minced chicken ball instead of the mince fatty pork ball ) was bland and non palatable. Most of us did not even take more than 2 or 3 spoonfuls of it. The Jiu Hu Char is another example where without the pork lard it tasted terrible. This restaurant is definitely not for the connoisseur of Nonya cuisine.

Best nyonya food i have ever tasted! Really authentic and delicious. You will need some patience for the food to be served, but definitely worth the wait. Have been looking high and low for my favourite dish - "Perut Ikan" - and finally found it here. Most importantly, this is one of the rare places that you can find actual fermented fish stomach in the perut ikan dish. Kudos to the chef for the excellent cooking!

(Translated by Google) Came to eat for the first time, it tastes good. We ordered small portions and ate a lot of dishes, fish, shrimp, chicken, tilapia, ahzat dessert called black glutinous rice. There is only one dish that I can’t accept is shrimp, it’s too small, just the size of a stir-fried dish! ! The price of winter melon and barley water is RM4 for Xiaogui. But overall it is acceptable. This is my personal opinion. You can try it out.

This is a family run restaurant so it has a warm, cosy and comfortable atmosphere. The food is good. The sambal for the ju ho char is spicy indeed. The kapitan chicken is just nice with lots of gravy. For dessert, each of us have a bowl of red bean soup with longan and a black glutinous rice soup with coconut milk. They are definitely sumptuous. Will definitely return for our next visit to Penang. It is advisable to make reservation before coming as tables are limited.

A commendable, family run Penang Nyonya restaurant. The owner is superbly friendly (plus point) and the menu is tailored for ease of ordering especially the 2-3 pax set menu for those who may feel gluttony to order every dish in the menu. Worthy mentions include the perut ikan, fish in assam sauce.. basically all the dishes in the set menu are tasty! Will definitely return.

The Best Penang Style Nyonya Cuisine. Very Friendly owner with his own style menu. Similar with local food at Phuket. We ordered set for signature and add more Kapitan curry chicken and we really like Chicken roll menu too much. Will come back again next time.Strongly recommend!!

My favourite thing about Nyonya cuisine is the way you mix and match all off the dishes to immerse your tastebuds in a plethora of flavours. Ivy's is the quintessential example of such an experience.

Food was top quality. Honestly, one of the best peranakan meals we've had in a long while. Don't miss out on the soup and otah dishes! The owner was also friendly and helpful. Definitely coming back to this gem in Penang👍

Tried a few other Peranakan restaurants, so today I wanted to try something new, and Google brought me to Ivy's, and oh boy, was I glad. It's a small restaurant, so either make reservations or dont come during peak hours. We were 4 but were recommended to take set for 3, which was actually good advice. The set is actually a 6 course meal. Kari Kapitan was good, but the asam pedas fish was super yummy. Otak² was also delicious. Nothing disappointed. Portions were sufficient as well. I found the pricing reasonable, especially for a Michellin Bib restaurant. Very friendly staff, great service. Will surely be back!

The 4 of us had a 3-person set. It was delicious and the portions were just right. It's special that even 1 person can eat at Ivy's as it serves 1 person set onwards. The joohoo bankuang chah is top notch. The owner personally recommends what to eat. Cozy and quiet small eatery.

Restaurant only got a few tables. We bumped into big group of patrons at the beginning, so a bit noisy. But later it was actually quite comfy and quiet. Staff very friendly and introduced us first time patrons to try the set, which is nice if you wanna try diverse dishes in smaller portions. We picked otah otah as snack, assam sea bass, curry chicken and glutinous purple rice & coconut milk dessert. The dishes are delicious, esp the tangy assam sauce and otah otah is full of fish flavor and herbs, and actual small pieces of fish~ Also added a small portion of beef rendang, rich coconut aroma and the beef flavorful, and unlike previous exp at other restaurants, not spicy at all. Deserves the 1 michelin star!

Friendly owner & staff. Food is authentic Nonya cuisine. Very home cooked & delicious. Worth many repeated visits to try out every dish on the menu. The pulut hitam is very good & lemak. The red bean soup is just nice, not coyly sweet. Love the Capitan Chicken which is their speciality. We finished every morsel because the food is simply great!

Nice place to eat dinner with the families. The chef is a great cooker. The foods that we ordered are all delicious. We didn't regret it at all. Mom said this gonna be one of our fav restaurant this year. My fav is the shrimp. The staffs are very helpful and the service is fast. The price is affordable. Really recommended.

Parking near the area is rather easy. There is around 10 tables available both inside and outside combined. Toilet very clean and doors easy to open. On a December 2019 Saturday night visit, I found the restaurant's operation hectic. Food given to the wrong table only for action to be undone, many unattended people waiting for table, tables waiting to order, long wait for food to arrive. For my family, the combination of the wait for a table, wait to order and the wait to receive food took about 45 minutes.

We came early at 6pm and had the pleasure of having a friendly chat with the proprietor Dragon and staff Dominic. Dragon was friendly enough to regailed us on how the restaurant was started 16 years ago ☺️. It was both informative and entertaining. Always a good thing to find out how it all began before you taste the food. I definitely appreciate it more. Though its not the first time we have nyonya food, Dominic took the effort to introduce and recommend to us the set dinner for 2. We obliged and were not disappointed. This is definitely one of the best nyonya food we had in years. Food is delicous, spices well-balanced and portioned appropriately. If you are around the area, I'd recommend you give it a try. Will being seeing yall again.

We had a good time here. The place is cozy and can get full quickly. The food is delicious and all the dishes are quite authentic. The kids could not get enough of the ‘inche kabin’ (fried chicken)! Recommended place to dine.

This was a very good peranakan restaurant. Friendly boss too (Dragon). Hole in the wall find in a restored shop house. Don't miss it! Favs were the kapitan curry chicken, jiu he char, and assam stingray. Sambal is great too. Come on weekends for their kuehs! I was sad to miss it. Boss kindly hosted me very close to closing time due to a bad jam. They are short staffed so please be understanding and simply enjoy the great food.

A small and homely place. We were served by a very friendly & helpful uncle. Was recommended to order the 3Pax set for 4ppl and added a few other dishes. However, food took almost 1.5h+ to be served.. and the dishes tasted mediocre or maybe not to our liking 😅 the dessert was great tho..!

A gem find in Penang, a place I will always visit when I come back here! It’s situated in home-like environment run by a family. The food is excellent as always, and they were accommodating to make us some extra dishes (fluffy omelette egg). The kapitan chicken is my favorite along with the lobak. Highly recommend going for the set dinners and do make a booking beforehand!

Ordered their set meal (for 3pax) and it was wonderful. The assam fish is their most recommended dish and now I know why! It was beautifully seasoned and cooked. Would go back just for this. Everything else was cooked to perfection. Service was fast as well. Thoroughly enjoyed my time here!

Food is so good and a lot. We came without reservation but the waiter still helped us get a nice table. I recommend to come early: 12PM for lunch or 6PM for dinner in case some of the food is finished. We ordered the set menu. Mix vegetables and Prawn asam are worth trying. The braised chicken with Soy sauce is for those who are a bit tired of coconut curry mix, otherwise, you can try Kapitaw chicken. Do check opening hours before coming!

  • 2/5 Weifen C. 1 year ago on Google
The portion was shockingly small! The Jiu hoo char is like just a scoop of ice-cream. Only 2 pieces of lettuce. The fish blubber soup has only 2 tiny small pieces, the rest is cabbage. The price is high with very small portion. Taste of food is acceptable. After eating this dinner, I need to go for supper.

Longest wait ever for food to be serve. Not to mentioned waited for table too despite making a reservation. The entire experience took 2hrs! I guess the Michelin award given boosted the business but managing the volume is a problem. Perhaps they shouldn’t take in the same amount of guests if can’t cope with the volume. Food was just ok. I enjoyed the Nyonya fish the most.

  • 5/5 E N. 11 months ago on Google
Good food and reasonable price. We love the casual and relaxing ambience. Food taste good at reasonable price. We ordered two additions dishes on top of our main to taste. Overall, we love the taste and will be back. Can try this place.

  • 5/5 YZ P. 7 months ago on Google
The assam fish was VERY good! The assam sauce was slightly sour, and the fish was cooked just right, so the dish was very refreshing. I will come back again just for the assam fish! I like the sambal chilly as well. Very spicy, so just a little of the chilly is enough. The otak otak came with real fish! The staffs were friendly, and when they know it’s our first time there, they took time to introduce the dishes to us. We went there on a Thursday evening, and didn’t have to queue as we opted to sit outside. Weather was good that day, so it was pleasant. If you want to sit indoors where there is air conditioning, you will need to make a reservation in advance.

Managed to book for lunch slot last minute, and really glad I did managed to dine in. I really enjoy whole experience over there, especially the food. Owner is really friendly and always engage small conversation with us, and the place is really clean. I really love the hae bee sambal, it taste like floss-like, and very nice to eat with rice. The curry kapitan is so yumssss

We visit this place everytime we are in Penang (3X so far) but I must say we are terribly disappointed this time, firstly the owner always pushes the same menu set that definitely has been pre done, not fresh, very little serving and then he tells you to extra order coz obviously serving is not enough and it's not worth really because small plate of chicken that serves 4 pax would cost RM48. Just coz we are not locals, don't try this on us to make back from covid loses. We came to support your shop again..should appreciate your loyal customers. Won't be returning anymore...

Small little restaurant with limited seatings, please make reservation or come early. The food is a bit slow if there is a crowd. The price is a bit expensive for the ala carte but portion is much bigger than set. Ordered set meal for 2 pax, the fish in gulai tumis Assam is very good, and the kapitan curry chicken is very good as well, the assam prawn is well fried and crispy. Overall great experience and good food

We had our team lunch here. The food is fabulous. Many plates of dishes were brought out and spread on the table. The owner gave us instructions on what goes with what e.g. the chicken inchi kabin goes with the spicy aromatic sauce with a hint of Lea and Perrin's sauce. The joo hop char goes with the leafy vegetables and the Belacan sauce, etc. Every dish Wasa mouth watering delight. As it was Chinese New Year, he also gave us complimentary mandarin oranges. We went for dinner with 4 pax, owner offers us a 3pax dinner set and we order some extra dish too. Turns out the meals was delicious and we finished it every drop of it. The asam fish, kapitan chicken.. oh.. really enhance my appetite and I took almost two full bowl of rice with it! The setting is more like home cook meal but with medium size dinning. The whole dinner set included dessert was just RM129.00. To me that’s very reasonable price. Great for family!
