Amazing cooking class, a must do if you are in Penang. Sam collected us early morning from our hotel in George Town and took us to a local market in Air Itam for a truly unique local experience. Following this we took our haul from the market back to his cooking studio which is based in his flat with views spanning the whole of George Town. Here we were guided by Sam and produced three utterly delicious dishes including chicken rendang, lamak laksa and kerabu sotong (squid salad). Thank you for this unforgettable experience.

My 10-year old son, my wife and I had really enjoyed our culinary experience with Chef Samuel. With Chef Samuel’s professional guidance , my son was able to make delicious curry chicken tray as well as a fried rice during his first cooking class ever!!! Thank you, Chef Samuel!

What a fantastic day with chef Samuel. We cooked,we chatted, I learned to make some seriously interesting Malaysian dishes. I've picked up some new skills and techniques. I had high expectations of the day and it lived up to all of them. I loved it. There is added charm with his wife and young son in attendance. Thank you Chef

My wife and I spent a superb day with Chef Samuel. We first hit the markets to select our ingredients, then worked through preparation, cooking and then eating 4 amazing dishes. Sam has great talent across many cooking styles and cuisines, and imparted many tips and techniques that will help us in so many ways. A wonderful experience, and super view from the kitchen as well. A must try Penang experience

Samuel is an amazing cook and wonderful host! My mother and I were in town for a short period of time in Penang and his cooking class was a huge highlight. Samuel even went out of his way to show us a shop that sold a very specific cup I was looking for. This was not on the normal agenda and he went out of his way to create a custom tour of us! Would highly recommend his classes.

We had a great time taking one of Chef Samuel’s private cooking classes. We enjoyed going to the market to gather ingredients, and Chef Samuel was very patient and encouraging as he taught us to make four dishes. We also appreciated information about Malaysian culture and tips on local attractions. We look forward to making these dishes again when we return home and encourage anyone staying in the Penang area to take a class with Chef Samuel!

My husband and I love to take a cooking class when we travel and I have say that the highlight of our trip to Penang was spending the morning with Chef Samuel and his wife Jacqueline. From the minute that that he picked us up at our hotel to the trip to the Ayer Itam wet market for our ingredients to the preparation and cooking of our meal, everything was superb...especially the eating part...the food was delicious! Samuel is an excellent Chef and a natural and engaging instructor and I loved the fact that we were able to customize the menu to our tastes. We are definitely looking forward to making these dishes at home. I highly recommend this experience to everyone...you will not be disappointed. Thanks Chef!

Chef Samuel is an excellent cooking teacher in every sense of the word - ingredients shopping, ingredient’s theory, timing, cooking heat level, and stir frying technique. His cooking studio is located on a high floor of a high rise building near Penang Hill with good natural ventilation and a commanding view of George Town and the water front. My wife and I learned how to properly make 4 Malaysian dishes. It was fun and delicious. We will carry our new found skills (including how to create “wok hay” with a home gas top stove) back home to Carmel Indiana. Thank you Chef Samuel!

This was the best cooking class we have taken. A very professional chef with helpful comments and directions throughout the process. Not only that took the trouble to answer questions about items not included in our three menu choices. We will be back to take another class when we return to Penang.

We had a wonderful time learning culinary fundamentals and appreciating the key ingredients needed for making great tasting dishes. Samuel is extremely knowledgeable and professional. It was an amazing experience. You have to experience it to truly appreciate the vastness and depth of Malaysian cuisine. Highly recommended.

It was an awesome experience for both my wife and I to attend Chef Samuel’s 4 meals cooking class. I learnt how to make the famous Penang Char Koay Teow (CKT), Penang White Curry Mee, Penang Assam Laksa and Ayam Capitan. For the first time, I could cook CKT at home with regular wok to get the “Wok Hei” and umami taste following Samuel’s method and his black sauce. Chef Samuel explained the theory of application of various core ingredients of Malaysian style curry. How to make curry look appetizing and delicious. Thanks to chef Samuel, now I am able to cook CKT in oversea. Attending Samuel class was one of the highlights during my 8 days trip to Georgetown, Penang. I highly recommend Samuel for those who are interested to make authentic Penang Street food at home.

Samuel was a gracious host, whirling me and my mom thru Penang with deftness and panache. There is something special about being invited into someone’s home to eat, and Samuel’s lesson takes place in his kitchen (with a view!), resulting in a warmth that is difficult to match. The lesson includes a walk thru a lively wet market, some curated snacks at a hawker court, and finally the lesson. The thing that struck me was how Samuel explained the “how” and “why” of cooking. How is monosodium glutamate balanced by patience? Why do we add additional water to dough? Samuel embodies the creativity, artistry, and rigor that brings depth and breadth to cooking; he truly has the varied experience and passion to fuel this lesson. All to boot, his recommendations on “insider” bars, hawker stalls, and local cuisine provides a steady hand amidst the indecision that occasionally arises during vacation.

Chef Samuel has a very thorough knowledge of the Nyonya food which enabled us to understand more about this food culture of Penang. We selected dishes from this cuisine to prepare and cook. Firstly he took us to the markets to purchase all the ingredients we needed - we found this very interesting seeing how busy these markets are. He guided us through each step with very easy to follow recipes and instructions. We had a very memorable afternoon with Chef and thoroughly enjoyed the very tasty meals we had prepared . Thank you Sam for a wonderful experience. Sheryll & Paul

I truly recommend Cooking with Chef Samuel! It was one of this unforgettable moments during our stay in Malaysia :) We had the opportunity to visit the local market, ask questions about products we didn't know, try some new food. Cooking itself was very pleasant, recipes of our choose were explained well, so we gained new knowledge of preparing Asia food. Chef Samuel is very friendly and easy-going person what makes cooking fun! 12/10 🙌✨

This was a fun, interactive way to learn the street food dishes we’ve been eating around Malaysia. Chef Samuel was really nice and answered all of our food questions. I appreciated going to the market with him to select our ingredients, and cooking in his studio had a stunning aerial view of Penang Island. It’s clear Chef Samuel has a love for food and sharing his talents with visitors.

I was looking for a different experience instead of doing the usual touristy sightseeing. Glad I signed up this cooking class with Chef Samuel. The experience was eye opening and fabulous. We started with a local market tour buying ingredients required for cooking the dishes we have selected from an extensive list of Penang local delights. His cooking studio had a beautiful sky view of the entire Georgetown and Penang Hill. The cooking class itself was fun and engaging. Demonstrations and explanations were clear, recipes are easy to execute. Chef Samuel asked a lot of questions and shared many cooking tips. We loved all his recipes, especially his version of Asam Laksa which is the BEST amongst all I’ve tried in Penang! I would highly recommend anyone to his cooking class and would definitely learn to cook from him again when I visit Penang in future!

We had a wonderful cooking experience with Chef Samuel. After picking up our supplies and trying some delicious snacks at the market, Samuel and his partner Jacqueline welcomed us into their lovely home where we prepared our dishes in his cooking studio. Samuel carefully explained how to prepare each dish and everything tasted amazing! Thanks again for a wonderful experience! Highly recommend Chef Samuel’s cooking class!

Chef Samuel is fantastic! He’s an excellent chef, very thorough and attentive, and gives great tips. He runs a private class with private transport, and gives you the freedom to select the dishes you want. Everything you make will be cooked from scratch, all the way to the market visit to pick up ingredients. Couldn’t recommend this class more!

It was a very enjoyable session with Chef Samuel. Not only did we get to learn how to cook the dishes of our choice, we also managed to have a better understanding of the spices and ingredients which we used for the dishes that we cooked. We love the theory lesson which took place before the actual cooking commenced. Would highly recommend to everyone traveling to Penang for holidays.

A wonderful fun afternoon with my sisters spent finding out about spices and Malaysian cooking and then eating the results of our labours. We started out at a local food court trying a couple of local dishes before our lesson. Chef Samuel is super friendly and very knowledgeable.

Signed up for the private cooking class with my mother when we were in Penang in mid-May. Chose three dishes - assam laksa, prawn noodles and char koay teow for the class as we are in love with Penang street food. Chef Samuel was a delight to cook with and learn from - he possesses rich knowledge of food in terms of theory and practical application, and it was an interesting introduction to the local food and lifestyle through visiting the local market to get the ingredients. The completed dishes were delicious and went well with the nutmeg juice prepared by him and his equally hospitable wife, Jacqueline. It was one of the highlights of our trip there.

Chef Samuel's cooking class was the highlight of our trip to Penang, and we definitely recommend it to those visiting the city! Chef Samuel and his wife Jacqueline were both wonderful hosts for this class, where we learned to cook Roti Canai, Chicken Rendang, Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Char Kuey Teow all in one afternoon! The food turned out delicious of course, and Chef Samuel explained the importance of the ingredients and cooking techniques very carefully! Now we're looking forward to making these dishes at home ourselves :)

Chef Samuel was very kind and knowledgable. Learned so much about authentic local foods both in the market tour and in the kitchen. He even hooked me up with some freshly made sambal! - an overall excellent experience

We would give this class a 6 stars review but Google won’t allow us to do that :-) This exceeded expectations and was a really special experience. It was so well organized, professional and well thought through. You can tell this is Chef Samuel's passion and it really shines through in his teaching and attention to detail. We love Malaysian cuisine and its complex flavors and appreciated having Samuel educate us on all of the ingredients, the stories behind the dishes, the techniques and so much more. His place is the ideal setup and is just the right balance of a professional cooking space while feeling intimate in a personal home. Also, my wife has a gluten and dairy intolerance and Samuel was very accommodating. And of course, all of the food was so delicious, it was the best food we've had in our 1 month stay in Malaysia and we've had a lot of delicious food! I look forward to making those dishes at home one day to share with friends and family. Thank you Chef Samuel!

We really love the cooking class conducted by Chef Samuel. We didn't really expect that kind of professionalism in this kind of a setting. Chef Samuel was patient and explained each step clearly. It was not rushed or stressful. (No Hell's Kitchen vibes definitely 😂) He guided us patiently when we forget a step or two. The whole process was really relaxing and enjoyable for us. Even as a local, I never really learn how to cook until now. Thanks to Chef Samuel for the authentic recipes (and his wife for the amazing photos). Really enjoyed the class! Five stars!

We learned a lot and had fun! Chef Samuel's lovely apartment is very well set up for professional cooking classes, and we felt very welcome and at home. The tuition is thorough, expert and professional. The style is very hands-on - come prepared to work and learn!

What a great afternoon we had with Chef Samuel!! A private cooking lesson with the food we have choosen ourselves. A lot of explanation and a lot of fun! His appartment also provides a super nice view of Georgetown. After being at the market and cooking, we also enjoyed very much the eating of the food together. Samuel even bought us Durian to experience for the first time. I hope we can replicate the nice dishes at home with the recipes we received. Great experience!!

24/5/2022, my 1st private cooking class with Chef Samuel in Penang! From sourcing raw ingredients at local market to preparation & cooking in the kitchen, and finally delicious dishes on dinning table! Chef Samuel has great patience & generously share his cooking skills in great details.

Chef Samuel is an amazing chef and even a better teacher. He captured the essence and flavors of Penang food. And this is something you can take home to your country and replicate. What an incredible experience to learn from Chef Samuel. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended. Don't leave Penang without experiencing a cooking class or two with Chef Samuel. Many thanks Chef!
