The row of street food has been moved from the main road (Chulia Street) to the side road which I think is a good idea. I am glad my favorite wanton mee is still here serving up the best bowl of Penang style wanton mee Maybe the government should turn this side road into a pedestrian street for the safety of people dining here.

I’ve been coming here everytime I visit Penang since 2018, and which time I enjoyed the food very much. Now they’ve relocated to a busy street with traffic next to it. The best recommendation I would tell you is the wantan mee, it’s always good. Before MCO, it used to have very long queue, now they serve still as good quality but with much lesser waiting time. Another food I enjoy is the Lobak from the opposite street (served by a young man). Chulia St is also very lively at night, with pubs and music blasting across the street.

[2022-07-14, pictures of stalls and food below] mother and son wanton mee: very nice, springy noodles, lots of extra lard on request, but no sambal which was sad. pork satay: very good. and the peanut sauce is rich without being too sweet. assam laksa: wouldn't get it again. no meat or fish or prawn. just the noodles and fresh mint on top (admittedly, quite nice). not a fan of assam laksa anyway.

Delightful Cantonese style fried noodles by the Chan octagenarian couple, now tucked away from the main Chulia Street, along Lebuh Carnavon towards a corner junction. The stall is unmistakably flanked on both sides by round tables for the regulars. The Char Hor Fun (RM5) is exquisitely done with plenty of wok hei, as good as the Tanjung Bungah morning version. The Hokkien Char however lacks the noodle softness delivered by the Hainanese chef at Nam Kie on Kimberley Street and may disappoint a true noodle connoisseur. This culinary art is fast disappearing due to the absence of any heir apparent and already lost in the popular KL stalls.

Chulia Street's hawker food offers a diverse culinary experience, with an array of delicious options. However, the challenge lies in finding seating arrangements. The popularity of the street's hawker fare often results in limited places to sit, making it somewhat inconvenient for a comfortable dining experience. Despite the seating struggle, the vibrant flavors and variety of dishes make it worth exploring for any food enthusiast. Consider opting for a takeaway approach to fully enjoy the delectable offerings while navigating the limited seating situation. Overall, Chulia Street hawker food stands out for its taste, but be prepared for the potential seating challenge in this bustling culinary hotspot.

Dinner @ Chulia Street Night Market & Xi Nan Cafe. . The area on a weekday night seemed quieter than I recall, with only a handful of stalls in the Chulia Street Night Market, perhaps a fallout of the pandemic. . Loved the Lor Bak, or 5 Spice Roll (MYR RM18), a mixture of fried items and fritters. . Among the medley of ingredients, those that stood out included the eponymous 5 Spice Roll with its crisp crunch to the tofu bean curd skin, and robust meaty earthy savoury sweet salty nutty spice flavour from the juicy filling. . The bouncy tofu bean curd with grainy sweet flavour was comforting, while the chewy Taiwanese pork sausages had addictive meaty savoury sweet smoky flavour. . The Cuttlefish Kang Kong (MYR RM18) has fresh blanched water spinach with vegetal bitter sweet flavour, while the slippery cuttlefish lends a good crunch to texture. . Topped with pickled mustard greens, crushed peanuts, and lime juice, while the thick gravy has an enticing sweet savoury shrimpy sour spice flavour, yum. . The Wanton Noodles (MYR RM6.50) is served Hong Kong style with a dark soy sauce gravy. . They're well regarded for having bouncy thin egg noodles with grainy sweet salty flavour, and medium-sized minced pork dumplings infused with pork lard oil which carries robust meaty sweet savoury salty flavour, yum. . We were drawn to the frying skills of the hawker at Granny's Fried Oyster Omelette Shop. The Fried Oyster Omelette (MYR RM16) has lots of egg without much potato starch, fluffy and soft and moist, with bold eggy sweet savoury salty flavour. The oysters were small and carried a small juicy bite with briny salty sweet flavour, pairing well with the spicy garlic chili.

Wan Tan Mee here is still my all time fave! Moved from the front of Regent Furniture to corner of Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Carnavon (really didn't know Carnavon was that looong) Curry mee (also moved) is still good. One of the best! Five stars in terms of food and street ambience. Where 'cha expect to get good hawker food from? A hotel? 🤣

Walking distance to many local hotels in the area. Nice clean street food environment. Like that they didn't use plastic cutleries here. Food was good . Some locals do come here but mostly tourist or locals whom bring tourist here. The fried carrot cake was lacked seasoning but had wok hei. The noodles soup , wonton noodle and oyster omelette was good. The drinks were pretty small portion for rm 3. It was served in a kiddy cup and mostly ice.

If you can spend time waiting for food (around 15-30 mins) there, you absolutely have good food. My fried oyster egg was a bit over cooked, but its taste is still okay. Satay is good, laksa is okay, too. There is a Turkish dessert bar nearby. It's nice and delicate also.

Lots of food options, find a seat wherever you can (they do not correlate with the food stall). Lively ambiance with lots of bars and live music. Very popular with tourists and locals. The streets are not the cleanest but it’s expected. Must check out when in Penang!

Variety of food. Curry mee had delicious broth mixed together with the sambal. Wantan mee small portion for the rm5 price. Char kueh kar was a good snack to munch while people watching. Got the apoms as well - 60sen/pc. Seatings are on the streetside. Come at 6pm cause less crowded.

Great street food. Loads of flavour, very authentic and cheap. Definitely recommend. Can get very busy. Closed Mondays. You sit at a table, buy a drink & then the different vendors will come to you offering their menus. So you may, in fact, order from 3 or 4 different vendors. You pay each vendor as they deliver your food. Organised chaos, but they know what they are doing!

It was a hot, messy, and noisy place. As a tourist, we did not know which seats were for which stalls. It was very confusing. We ordered satay and were told we could sit in the coffeeshop. And the condition for sitting in the coffeeshop was that we must order drink from them. Anyway, after experiencing the street hawker culture once, the other street hawker should be about the same. We decided we would eat in the comfort of the aircon restaurants after this experience.

Wan tan mee is good. Service very fast. The fried kway teow is good also. Heard week end here always long Q. Don't brother to try the satay, cheap but nothing special. Apam is devious.

Last visited August 2022. The night hawker stalls operate from 4 p.m. till midnight. My few favourite stalls which I frequented: The lady selling apom, a larger version of the Kuih Kapit, very light and airy, each piece is RM0.60. The Mother & Son classic Penang wonton noodles The Char Koay Teow, wok-hei & reasonably priced It’s very lively now after the pandemic, with a flow of local and foreign tourists. The road is not closed to cars; tables and seats are by the roadside; it is advisable to dine-in at your own discretion.

Loved the little food stalls on the streets of Chulia, with fairy lights strung. Cars still drove through the street as well! We tried the chicken satay skewers, oyster omelette, and fish bihun which were all amazing. You had to also purchase a drink and there's plenty of fruit juices and other options to accompany your meal! For more food reviews, check out my instagram @asydneysider 🤗 will be posting videos of this soon!

Not all the food stall here taste good. The popiah is surely something I will not order again. It’s so soggy and tasteless. The lala and mantis prawns was just ok. Same goes to the fried oyster. The queue for the wantan mee was very long and since it’s least of my favorite noodle, I decided to skip that. Overall it will not be a place that I would want to spend time going around looking for a parking spot and then dine there.

Crowded, popular street full of eats. Plenty of choices. Sit anywhere, the drinks stall will take care of the table, so order some drinks. You have get food from any stall and eat at your table.

Good local food with different of choices for dinner, good noodle, Char stir-fried noodles and. Satay, but it’s hard to sit without the guys came and force to order some drinks otherwise you will get charged for sitting even though we ordered a lot of food!

Eat in open, with make shift tables. Different experience from city. Many different kinds of food - satay, fruit juice, char kway tiao! Auntie and uncle from this char kway tiao store is very friendly and their food is nice! Recommend!!

The wanton mee is fantastic!! Must try! The texture of the noodle is very bouncy and light, the price is also super value for money, 6RM for 1 hearty bowl. The curry noodle from a nearby stall is also great. Flavourful yet light broth, also 6RM a bowl 👍👍

We tried so many different dishes! Char kway teow with duck and egg is delicious and only cost $8. Extremely busy so be patient. We also tried the fish ball soup $6 from next booth. The owner’s brother is so attentive looking after the people in queue. Then we order mango and papaya juice $7.5 from the booth next. One lady came to our table, and we ordered chicken wings from her. It costs $7 for 2 pieces. We really enjoyed it here. Find a table and you can order different food around. Some they deliver to you.

We stopped by this food street as it was walking distance from our hotel. The place was crowded and lively, what you would expect from the street food area. Cars and bikes were passing by, it really gives you an experience eating by the road, having a mixture of car fumes and food fumes. We ordered the mantis prawn from the seafood stall, and had the fried rice and Cantonese noodles from the stall behind it. I lined up for the fried rice cakes as well. The food were very average for Penang standard, the only above average dish were the mantis prawn dish. The rice cakes were somewhat flavourless. It's alright, but not worth the visit if you're far away.

Highly recommended for people that want to have a nice and interesting experience! Food was good even though not expensive 👍 only thing i didn't like is the cars driving through the street smells bad.

Mochi at d entrance 3*, muay chee RM 4 is smooth n soft but d peanut powder is too powdery. Sweetness is also lacking. d overall combi is slimy 🙊 Home Style Seafood - unique homemade seafood sauce 5*, had it with lala RM 12. Unforgettable taste. Poached cuttlefish RM 14 is fresh n chewy. Stir fry kailan RM 10 is v delicious, veg is well-sliced n thoroughly-cooked with wok hey. Stall next to Home Style Seafood serves excellent dumplings 5*! RM 10 for 6 big pcs. Ask for sambal belacan to eat with. d accompanying chilli sauce is 👎🏼 Fried rice RM 7 is cooked with prawn n chopped sausages. It has wok hey too! *wait time required. Drinks stall which owns d tables right at these 2 stalls - order 山楂 (hawthorn) drink 4*. Skip d honeydew juice 1* which is watery n contains mostly sugar syrup, we cld barely taste d fruit. V crowded on weekends. SOP: order drinks fr closest stall then can sit at their table but food can come fr all over. Hawkers generally have amazing memory n they seem to b able to serve u anywhere.

It's busy street market, table and vendors are on street and cars still come , so watch your feet, when you got table the waiters will come with menu you can order then pay when served. It's was nervous dinner that i don't feel comfortable and relaxing. Cost of food is over rate.same price or more compared with eat in restaurants ( local restaurants)

👍 Queue seemed quite long when we arrived around 2.30 pm but we only waited about 20 minutes. I think they should have more signage to tell customers what to do so the process can be easier. There was only one waiter upstairs in the seating area so it was quite difficult to get his attention. Food is...
