We spent three nights in this beautiful small hotel (restored shophouse) within the UNESCO area. The rooms were comfortable and the staff very accomodating. There were many restaurants and street food vendors within a very easy walk. If you are interested in the local fauna and flora, history, architecture, eating and drinking then the owner can give you a wealth of useful information that will enrich your experience of Penang. Highly recommended.

Great location just a few steps to Komtar and old town. Affordable price per night. Room is clean and well-decorated with necessary facilities in place. Excellent service from staff. I was surprised when staff/owner came up with tray of bakery and beverage serving me at 9:30 PM. Totally recommended this place to those who are looking for accommodation in Georgetown.

Even better the 2nd time. We were last here in 2017, and had a great stay. This is our first OS trip since COVID and we chose Malaysia as it feels like a second home, and we had to come back to BNL. Cheah and his staff are wonderful hosts, you could not ask for better.

Nicely restored heritage house with good and friendly crew. The owner had good recommendations for food around georgetown. Great location and comfortable bedding. I was allowed to stay in the common area after checkout, since my flight was in the evening. Showering was frustrating because of the very low water pressure. Very unfortunately my stay was spoiled by a cockroach which flew on to my pillow on the second night. The crew didn't manage to find the cockroach immediately, nor was it caught during housekeeping the next day. I encountered it again while showering on my third day and this time the crew managed to catch it. Even though the cockroach was caught, I found it very difficult to relax for the rest of my stay. I would like to believe it is the exception rather than the norm though.

Lovely place near amazing street food and the charming old part of town. A meticulous owner with a keen eye for details ensures you will have a fantastic stay and feel welcomed. Gaj was amazingly attentive, friendly, and looked after guests with quiet diligence. The thoughtful botanic themed rooms were matched with fresh flowers and the kuih and tea are outstanding. The building has been lovingly restored so take a moment to have a look and enjoy the lounge area downstairs.

An Exceptional Stay - Highly Recommended! My mother and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Cheah’s lovely Betel Nut Lodge (BNL) in Penang and we cannot recommend this place highly enough! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with exceptional hospitality. BNL was a delight, boasting a spacious and spotless clean room. The location of BNL is unbeatable, situated in close proximity to main tourist attractions, i.e. Chew Jetty, wonderful dining options in Penang. This made our stay very enjoyable, as we could explore easily the area without the need for extensive travel. What truly sets this hotel apart was Cheah, the owner's genuine warmth and kindness. He went beyond to ensure that our stay was comfortable and memorable. One of the many examples of his thoughtfulness was the delicious cookies and tea that he prepared for his guests. He generously invited us to join him in the cosy kitchen, where he shared interesting stories and insider tips about the local attractions and food options as a resident of Penang. His invaluable advice enriched our travel experience. An exceptional owner made my visit an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend Betel Nut Lodge to anyone looking for a comfortable and charming place to stay while exploring the wonderful Penang.

We had a wonderful stay. It's very well located, the rooms are comfy and have everything you need and the lodge is nicely decorated with antiques showing a glimpse of the history of the building. They just opened a cafe in the common area where they serve excellent coffee and delicious cakes. Finally, the manager was very welcoming. He is a very well educated man and he seems to know most if not all of the restaurants in the area so be sure to follow his advice if you want to truly get to know what Penang has to offer!

I absolutely loved staying here. Location is perfect. The staff is amazing. I staid over new years and they had organized drinks and snacks. And the next day they offeren the guests a traditional lunch for free. Because it was a special occasion. It truly was home away from home and when visiting Penang again I wll definatly stay here.

This hotel is a reconverted Chinese-shop and home, which retains it's old world charm. It has an open courtyard inside and the owner Mr.Chia has hand-picked all the antiques inside. The staff were helpful always. The room we slept in was very quiet and therefore we had good sleep. Though rooms were small, they had all the necessary amenities in them. Mr.Chia, the owner, was a fount of information on everything Penang, including everything Peranakan.

The hotel has a boutique character charm to it, and is situated at an excellent location, walking distance to food night markets, nice restaurants, museums and more. My room was comfortable and clean. Everyday, it was nice coming back to my room after a long day of sightseeing and finding fresh cut flowers and receiving a complimentary hot tea with a treat. Magnifique! The Wifi was great! The manager was a fantastic host, very welcoming. He provided great information on restaurants and events. Please follow his recommendations, you won't regret it! The staff was great, so helpful. I highly recommend Betel Nut Lodge, and will definitely come back when I'm in George Town.

In 15 years of traveling, I have never felt so welcome than at Betel Nut Lodge. Forget the extra mile, the staff over there goes an extra marathon to make sure you have an amazing stay. Arrival pasteries and tea, late night snacks, surprise dinner we were invited to with other guests, late checkout with possibility of a shower... They are rewriting the book on hospitality. The manager and owner, Cheah, is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about anything you would like to know about Penang and Malaysia. The cleanliness of the room and shared areas matches that of any much more expensive hotel. So in short : go, just go, you will love it.

The Betel Nut Lodge owners demonstrated a new standard for hospitality and friendliness. It felt like being invited into their home. The location is perfect, close to the craft market, and the room was perfectly clean. I would book again next time when visiting Penang.

The most outstanding, great and inspiring hotel you will ever stay in! This experience is one I will never forget. Besides the cleanest rooms, excellent wifi and great ambiance, it is the staff and feelings you'll get, feeling right at home as soon as you step into this hotel. We got more than, what we ever paid for in a hotel. We've felt like home in a town we've never visitied before. This experienced actually has given us much more, than we paid for. Their staff will do anything to make sure you will love Georgetown in Penang. You wont regret this, actually we will come back!

The receptionist and owner were so friendly and helpful. They helped us out in a difficult situation and found us a room when all else was booked (as our previous hotel was terrible). They definitely cared that we enjoyed our stay in Georgetown, and gave great recommendations for food in town. They even packed us a snack for the journey when we left!!

Nice comfortable guest house with private bathrooms. For some religious holidays, they may invite you for a meal with most ingredients being made by the family or staff by hand
