Also known as Penang War Memorial the Cenotath is built in 1929 to commemorate the fallen commonweath soldiers in in various wars and uprising in the region. The initial memorial was destroyed in World War II. The current memorial was rebuilt in 1946. Today the memorial is gated up but you can can still take photos of it thru the gate. There is a nice promenade where the memorial is located with some nice street food. There are also a number of other memorials and heritage interest within walking distance.

Yup, this is just a memorial, but surely they have a history and a deep story. Around the monument, the design of the city park is united and friendly with nature and the environment, for social interaction is very cool.

It's good that the government want to remember the dead who are termed as Glorious dead in the epitaph👍👍👍 A nice white structure, where in the evening light is lit and fresh flowers kept. The veterans and commoners who lost their life in World War 1, World War 2, Insurgency are remembered

The Cenotaph, also known as Penang War Memorial, is a cenotaph located at the Esplanade in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The site of the Cenopath is situated at the shoreline of the Esplanade, at Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah (at a section of street also known as The Esplanade) and Jalan Padang Kota Lama (Esplanade Road), by the padang (open field) and the City Hall that it fronts.

One of the interesting monuments you can see in George Town is the World War I Cenotaph Memorial, which is situated at the Esplanade near the historic Town Hall. This landmark was originally erected by the British in memory of those who served and died for The Crown during WWI, particularly a naval battle that occurred in the harbour during what is known as 'The Battle of Penang'. It appears the Cenotaph was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt in similar appearance, being commemorated in 1948. Today you can see this war memorial in addition to several colonial era buildings and landmarks including the Town Hall and City Hall buildings, Fort Cornwallis, St. George's Church, The Logan Memorial and the Jubilee (Queen Victoria) Clock Tower.

The Cenotaph is a war memorial on Whitehall in London, England. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it was unveiled in 1920 as the United Kingdom's national memorial to the British and Commonwealth dead of the First World War, was rededicated in 1946 to include those of the Second World War, and has since come to represent British casualties from later conflicts. The word "cenotaph" is derived from Greek, meaning "empty tomb". Most of the dead were buried close to where they fell; thus, the Cenotaph symbolises their absence and is a focal point for public mourning. The original temporary Cenotaph was erected in 1919 for a parade celebrating the end of the First World War, at which over 15,000 servicemen, including French and American soldiers, saluted the monument. Over a million people visited the site within a week of the parade.
