A little tiny stall in an alleyway between two buildings along Clarke Street is where you will find this nondescript stall dishing out one of Penang's favourite foods. This Koay teow thng (rice noodles in soup) served here has a very popular following with locals and tourists alike, and peak dining hours will see the tiny alleyway filled up quickly. Luckily, they have combined with the cafe just next to them so that they can serve their food in that cafe as well. This stall is different from others in that they not only offer a basic bowl of the dish, but also gives you options to add on other ingredients not normally found in others. These include additional chicken meat, skin, innards and also fish balls, meat balls, vegetables and even an egg. There is also an option to order the chicken meat alone along with bean sprouts. Everything they offer is neatly displayed on mini posters, including a picture of a basic Koay teow thng. Menus are in Chinese and English, so the tourist will have no trouble ordering. Parking is not really a problem here as Clarke Street is not that busy. The food is here is delicious - even the basic bowl will be sufficient for most people, so there's no need to go overboard unless you want to. The soup in Koay teow thng is the key ingredient, since it determines the taste of the entire bowl. The soup here is rich and full of flavour. While there are other stalls around Penang that also sell Koay teow thng, this is probably one of the best around.

Very delicious Kway Teow though is sitting by the alley. It is like alfresco dining Penang-style. A tiny bowl with assortment of fish/meat balls and chicken meat. Simply comfort-foodish!!!

Caught between an alley and a prewar shop, opposite a Caltex station that has seen better days is a morning session of Koay Teow Thng run by a young fiesty Hokkien lady with a husband at her beck and call. She has perfected the art of customer choices through a menu where the parts are greater than the whole sum. My humble bowl of koay teow came with singular fried fishball, boiled fishball, meatball, pork ginger ball and shredded chicken in precise quantities at RM4.50, leaving out the scarce duck blood and must have pig intestines which are added for another RM1.20. Add choisum, chicken feet and today's promoted Hockchiew fishball sets you back another RM4.00. And here lies the heart of Penang commerce, drip by drip the hole in your pocket gets larger. No more eat all you can, its Pay as you Go so adept to Singapore culture. The chicken consomme was light, but this meal offers no solace except a lingering sour after taste of how hard times have crushed generosity in this new generation of cooks... or maybe its just a thing with these legendary Hokkien women counting every penny.

Parking not the issue. Despite not air conditioning, but comfortable environment. Accept ewallet. The koay teow sup taste ok, however personally I felt a bit salty. The coffee taste good. For the chicken, I might not appreciate it. Can drop by if nearby.

Hidden gem of Koay Teow Thโ€™ng in Penang island. Hidden is a small road by Argyll road. Food : the koay Teow soup is very delightful, the soup is not too overpowering with flavour, light yet fresh. The pork tendon ball is the surprise. The ngar choy kai, chicken side dish is not your normal silky smooth chicken but with a firm texture, sause is nice and flavourful. Tips of good koay teow Thโ€™ng is to have the yellow noodle with koay teow as it add in the texture. 5/5 Price : cheap 5/5 Location: need to on a look out as you might missed it, plenty of road side parking Overall : 5/5 one of my fav breakfast place

Arrived around 10am, street parking was a challenge. Stall is at an alley between 2 rows of houses. We sat inside the house next to the stall. Our breakfast consisted of 2 bowls of Koay Teow soup with a little mee mixed. There were 4 fish/meat balls with bean sprouts & chicken slices added. Added an extra small dish of boiled chicken (meat was very tender). Overall food was tasty & well done. They went well with our usual hot tea & coffee. Prices was very reasonable. Worth a try, everyone! (Oh ya. It's high time, this very old establishment moved into a shop instead of from an alley. Business will flourish).

Very nice Penang style koay teow soup. Fishball is bouncy and tasty too. Sitting is limited and so is parking too.

Order a bowl for RM4.50 and I was delighted by a variety of ingredients in a simple comforting broth. The highlight of the dish was the ginger ball. It was so good that I decided to order another bowl of it for Rm3.50. (Just the ginger ball soup)

Light yet flavorful broth. The flat noodle is thin, translucent and just the right texture. Love the different kinds of tasty โ€˜ballsโ€™. If heard correctly, the chicken meat is from old hen? which explains the tougher meat. But personally would prefer silky smooth juicy tender meat though.

Don't overlook this inconspicuous alley with one of the best Kway Teow Thng in Penang 1. The soup Kway Teow Thng was light and easy on the stomach. It was very clean tasting as well as easy to finish. The chicken balls and pork balls were very tasty, obviously homemade and authentic 2. White chicken: lying on a bed of beansprouts, coupled with the chili proved to be a simple hit for everyone. Was so good we had to order a second portion

The unique recipe with a combination of old hen and pork bones boil into soup stocks, hand made saito fish ball and pork tendon meat ball makes Ah Boy Koay Teow Thng a local favorites and Michelin Bib Gourmand title.

My mom love this, me and siblings cycling around found itโ€™s accidentally long time ago.

  • 4/5 Poh Soh L. 6 months ago on Google
Michelin Bib Gourmand recommended. Tasty soup, silky kway teow. Various kind of balls tasted flat, not exciting at all. Chicken slices were tough, bean sprouts tasted way better. Saw liver, gizzard and other offal as add on items as we were leaving. Maybe should skip the balls and add these instead.

The stall is at the Lorong between two shops. Iโ€™m lucky to go there early about 9am, just a short queue. I only order Koay Teow Thโ€™ng and bean sprouts. The soup is clear or I would say is a bit plain taste, koay Teow is just perfect cooked. They are one of the newly listed Michelin Guide. Probably because of this, my expectations too high prior I had it. Oh, the auntie there also selling her homemade banana muffin. It quite nice.

Broth is quite flavourful as the hawker apparently uses old chicken to cook it though the meat can be pretty tough. Value for money as there are quite a number of fishballs & meatballs. Overall ok but not the best ktt in Penang. You can choose to sit at the side lane (ok when weather is not hot) or the little kopitiam beside it.

When during lunch time. This the second visit after years. Huge different compare to previous, the taste, portion, dishes to me are quite different. Now the serve tastefully KTT , lots of additional side dishes available especially thier steam chicken. Beside the store and the alley, they have shop for dine in also, no worries about the weather. Their soup to me is like huge improvement, as I remember it doesnt take that good to me before.

I loved this so much. The fish balls were juicy and delicious. The pork tendon ball was very special. Not crowded at all and good price for the portion. Highly recommend!

I fimd the kuey teow thng too oily and broth too little. It does not gives me the punching feel when having my first bite. So i believe other places can give better offer.

For such a cheap price of RM5 with so much of meat and fish balls, it is indeed cheap. Taste, not the best soup broth but consider good dy.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป 1) Reasonable tasty Koay Teow Th'ng 2) Simple menu, if you are not sure what to order 3) Reasonable prices ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป 4) The waiting could be quite long 5) Avoid complicated order, cause the crew would mixed up the order. Would be best to go with what's on the standard menu 6) Not all ingredients prepared by the crew, half of them from the suppliers, such as pork balls 7) The boiled chicken has really hard skin, not all parts cooked well equally 8) Soup tasted too plain, slightly flavourful than plain hot water 9) Seating really cramp, not recommended for elderly if coming with families in large group
